Chapter Eleven : A battle Between Pride and Survival

515 Words
Bella spent the rest of the day feeling miserable. She couldn’t believe how badly things had gone. “What am I going to tell Sophia?” she wondered. “I already gave her hope.” She couldn’t even bring herself to look Charles in the eye. Charles, on the other hand, kept his distance. Although he remained professional, Bella could sense his disappointment. She regretted ever bringing up the proposal. “I shouldn’t have asked him,” she thought. “I just hope I haven’t ruined our friendship.” That evening, Bella returned home and broke the news to Sophia and Cynthia. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. “He refused.” Sophia lowered her head in disappointment. “So… that’s it.” For a moment, no one spoke. Sophia sighed deeply. “How do I get myself out of this mess?” she thought. “I can’t keep living like this. I’m exhausted.” Bella reached for her hand. “Don’t worry. We’ll find someone else.” But Cynthia wasn’t convinced. She looked at Bella thoughtfully. “You said Charles is the breadwinner of his family, right?” Bella nodded. “Yes.” “And his family depends entirely on him?” “They do.” A faint smile appeared on Cynthia’s face. “Then don’t lose hope.” Bella frowned. “What do you mean?” “I think he’ll come around.” “You really believe that?” Cynthia nodded confidently. “Yes.” “Give him time.” Meanwhile, Charles arrived home carrying the weight of the day’s conversation. He sat quietly on the old sofa, lost in thought. Bella’s words refused to leave his mind. A huge amount of money. He shook his head. “No,” he whispered to himself. “I can’t do it.” But reality quickly interrupted his thoughts. His eyes wandered around the small house. He looked at his mother, lying weakly on her bed. Her medication had run out days ago, and she was only surviving because he hoped his salary would come soon. He glanced at his younger brother, whose dream of graduating from university had been cut short because there was no money left to pay his tuition. Then he saw his younger sister, quietly reading her schoolbooks, unaware that her next term’s school fees had not been paid. Finally, he walked into the kitchen. The shelves were almost empty. There was barely enough food for the next day. Charles leaned against the wall and buried his face in his hands. Tears filled his eyes. “God…” he whispered. “I don’t know what to do anymore.” Inside him, two voices fought for control. One whispered, “This is the breakthrough you’ve been praying for.” The other answered, “No amount of money is worth selling your dignity.” One said, “Your family needs you.” The other replied, “Don’t lose yourself because you’re desperate.” Charles closed his eyes tightly. For the first time in his life… …he didn’t know which voice to listen to.
