Chapter 6: Enemies in Disguise

1141 Words
The city looked different from the rooftop in daylight. Cold, sprawling, glittering with lies. Ariella clutched her coat tighter, the edge of the morning wind biting at her skin, but she didn’t move. She had stayed up all night listening to every recording, reading every page her mother left behind. And now, the truth was a storm in her chest. Han Min-jae had paid her mother to disappear. And now he paraded Ariella like a PR trophy. He would regret underestimating her. --- A soft knock pulled her attention. She turned. Jae Min stood at the rooftop entrance, coffee in one hand, something unreadable in his eyes. “You always vanish after stealing the spotlight?” he asked, walking over. “I needed air,” Ariella said. “And to remind myself not to burn this building down.” He handed her the coffee. “That bad?” She nodded. “I have proof. My mother recorded everything. She never wanted this life for me. And now I’m tangled in it deeper than ever.” Jae Min leaned beside her. “If you’re serious about exposing him, you need to be smart. Strategic.” “That’s why I need you.” He raised a brow. “Me?” “You know how these people move. You’ve been their golden boy for years. You know their pressure points.” “And you trust me with that?” Ariella took a slow sip of coffee before meeting his gaze. “I don’t trust easily. But I think you hate them just enough to help me.” He was quiet for a moment, then looked back out over the city. “I’m in.” --- They met in secret that afternoon, in a private library tucked behind Soojin’s art gallery. Dusty books lined the walls, and the door locked from the inside. Jae Min pulled out a folded sheet of paper. “These are the shell companies your father uses to hide his political payoffs. He launders money through fake charities and fake investors. If you follow the right trail, you’ll see it leads to a scandal big enough to end his career and maybe his legacy.” Ariella leaned in. “How do you know this?” “Because I used to help cover it up.” She studied him, surprised. “Why tell me this?” “Because I’m done being their puppet. And because if we’re going to take them down, we need to hit where it hurts most power.” Ariella opened her notebook and began mapping everything out: timelines, names, connections. A puzzle of corruption forming right in front of her. Jae Min looked impressed. “You’re not just angry you’re dangerous.” She smiled slightly. “Good.” --- Later, Ariella slipped into the dining hall for lunch, only to find Soojin waiting alone at the head of the table. That wasn’t a good sign. “Sit,” Soojin said calmly. Ariella obeyed. “I hear you’ve been spending a lot of time with Jae Min lately.” “We’re friends,” Ariella replied coolly. “You’re Han Min-jae’s daughter. You don’t get to have friends. Only allies and enemies.” Ariella tilted her head. “And which are you?” The woman’s smile thinned. “I’m your savior, if you play smart. Or your destruction, if you don’t.” Ariella met her gaze. “Is that a threat?” “It’s a warning,” Soojin said, sipping her tea. “You may have inherited the Han name, but you don’t have the blood to survive in this world. Jae Min is a liability. And if you want to stay, you’ll end whatever this is before it’s too late.” Ariella stood. “I’ll decide who’s a liability.” And she walked away. --- That night, Ariella received an anonymous message on her burner phone. > They know. Be careful who you trust. She stared at it, heart thudding. Who sent it? Jae Min? Someone else? She typed: > Who are you? No reply. --- Back in her room, she opened her laptop and searched one of the shell companies Jae Min had given her. And then she saw it. Her father’s signature on a donation check to a “Children’s Foundation” that didn’t exist. Cross-checked with a government contract won by Han Group the same month. A smoking gun. But before she could save the file, her screen went black. “What?” The laptop rebooted, but everything was wiped. A message flashed briefly before disappearing: > You’re playing with fire. --- Panicked, Ariella paced the room, trying to catch her breath. They’re watching me. I’m being followed. Someone knows everything. She picked up her phone to call Jae Min but hesitated. What if it was him? What if this whole thing was a setup? She’d given him too much already. And in this world, betrayal always wore a charming smile. Ariella backed away from the window, heart pounding. She was officially at war now. And no one could be trusted. --- The next morning, the house was buzzing. Min-jae had called an emergency family meeting. Ariella walked into the conference room to find him standing at the head of the table, a manila file in front of him, jaw clenched. “What’s this about?” she asked, sliding into her seat. Min-jae looked at her, then opened the file. He held up a printed email with a photo. Her photo. From the gala rooftop with Jae Min “You’re becoming reckless,” he said quietly. “And now our enemies are watching.” Ariella stared at the photo. Someone had been spying on them. “This wasn’t from the press,” Min-jae continued. “This was internal. Someone in this house is leaking information.” She froze. They’re trying to turn me into the scapegoat. “I’d never betray this family,” she lied smoothly. Min-jae studied her. “I hope that’s true. Because next time… you won’t get a warning.” --- That night, Ariella waited in the gallery library. Jae Min arrived late, looking tense. “I got your message. What happened?” “They’re onto us. Someone erased my laptop files. And I think they’re spying from inside.” He swore under his breath. “I told you, this game isn’t safe.” “I’m not playing,” she said. “I’m winning.” He looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time. “You really mean it, don’t you? You want to take them all down.” She stepped closer. “I want to destroy the illusion. No more pretending. No more lies.” For a second, their faces were inches apart. Jae Min reached for her hand. “Then we burn it all down together.”
