JADE’S POV “I’ll never accept that child as mine”… I sat in the large dining room as I remembered those exact words that came out of Silas’s mouth last night… Because how can a man hate his own blood?? Slowly, the sun began to rise, and I started staring at the untouched cup of tea in front of me, which stared back at me too. Then I finally realized that Silas never wanted me. And now, he did not even want the child growing inside me. I kept rubbing my stomach softly, even though there was no baby bump and nothing to show yet. But somehow, the pregnancy gave me hope every time I felt like drowning. I did not even know when tears slipped down my cheek, but I managed to wipe them quickly. Crying in this house felt useless. Nobody cared. Everybody worked for him, not me. And the only person who once cared about me, my father, had traded my life for his so-called reputation without blinking. I sighed shakily and whispered again to myself, “Why does he want this baby gone? Why?” It wasn't as if the pregnancy had surprised him. He knew I could not lie.. I even dropped the result on his table before he left earlier, but he didn’t even feel concerned about it for one bit. “You'd better remove that thing before it becomes a problem,” he had said, when he saw it. That moment kept replaying in my head like it was happening all over again. “Remove it.” “Remove it.” “Remove it.” I shut my eyes tightly and tried to breathe. I tried to stay calm. But as I did, his words were stuck in my mind like they were carved there… and oh the fear of returning to my job was getting worse each second. Immediately, the kitchen door opened and Helen walked out, wiping her hands on her apron. “Mrs Thornfield, you have not eaten…,” she said gently. “Don’t call me that!” I snapped at her… “I am not hungry.” Helen was the chief housekeeper here. And Silas had entrusted the care of all his house staff under her.. so she was more elderly. “I apologize ma’am.” I meant to say you should eat small… at least, for the baby.” My heart squeezed. Even she knew this child deserved better. Before I could reply, I heard footsteps… Heavy and angry ones. My body froze instantly. It was Silas. Dear God! I thought he had gone? He appeared at the doorway of the dining room, his expression blank, and his eyes cold. “Leave us,” he told Helen. She nodded quickly and disappeared into the kitchen. Then Silas walked closer, every step measured like he was controlling himself from exploding. “What did I say about eating alone in silence?” he asked quietly. I looked up at him. “I do not have the strength to eat.” “You need strength for the procedure. Eat.” My heart dropped. “Silas, no. I told you already. I am not aborting this child.” His jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would break. “Jade,” he said slowly, “do not push me.” “Silas,” I said, “please stop treating me like I am your enemy.” Immediately, He pulled out the chair beside me and sat down, his elbows resting on the table. “Do you know why I want you to remove it?” he asked. I swallowed. “Yes. Because you do not want me, and you do not want the child.” He laughed quietly. “You think this is about want?” “Then what is it about?” His cold eyes met mine. “This child will tie me to you forever. And I refuse that. I refuse to be trapped in a marriage that was forced on me.” “So your solution is to kill it?” My voice shook. “My solution is to make sure my life is not ruined,” he snapped. I pressed a hand to my chest. “And you think mine is not ruined already?” He looked at me for a long time. And in that silence, I realized something painful. He did not care. Not even a little. “Hey!,” he said, voice low and dangerous, “you will abort that child.” I stood up slowly. “No.” He also stood up. “You are not strong enough to fight me. Do not make this harder.” “Why are you doing this?” I trembled. “Why do you hate me this much?” “Hate?” He scoffed. “Hate is an understatement darling. You think I have time to hate you? I do not feel anything for you. Nothing. Not one thing.” I turned away from him, trying to fight the tears, but one slipped out of my left eye. Silas saw it, but his face did not change. “Get ready. We are going to the hospital.” I turned back. “I said no.” “Please”… He stepped closer. “You do not have a choice.” I stepped back. “Yes, I do.” He reached out suddenly, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me toward the hallway. “Silas, leave me!” I cried. “Stop shouting.” “Let me go!” I begged and begged. But the more I kept begging, the more he tightened his grip. “Jade, stop making this so dramatic.” “My child’s life is not a drama.” “It is not a child,” he snapped. “It is a problem.” “Then I am a problem too,” I cried out. He paused for a while, and immediately, his eyes flickered. Then hardened again. “You are a responsibility I did not ask for.” As I heard that, my whole body went cold. He pulled me again. “We are going to the hospital now.” I yanked my hand but he was stronger. His grip hurt so bad, and tears filled my eyes like water.. “Silas, please… stop! You are hurting me!” “Then stop fighting me!” We struggled in the hallway. He kept pulling me, and I kept resisting, until something inside me snapped. I twisted my arm sharply, slipped out of his grip, and ran. “Jade!” He barked and pursued me. I did not stop. I ran straight into the kitchen. Helen gasped when she saw me rush inside with tears running down my face. “Madam Jade?” She called out. Silas’s footsteps were coming closer. Without thinking, I grabbed the nearest knife. It was a sharp one, and immediately, I pointed it at myself. Helen screamed, “Madam, no!” Silas stepped into the kitchen, breathing hard. As soon as he saw me with the knife, he calmed down. “Jade,” he said quietly. I pressed the knife closer to my stomach. “Leave me,” I said, my voice shaking badly. “Do not come near me or I will stab myself..” His chest rose and fell slowly. “Please… put the knife down.” “No,” I whispered. “I would rather die today than kill my baby.” His eyes widened a little. The first real emotion I had seen on his face since we got married. “Jade,” he said again, stepping forward. But I stepped back. “I said Do not come close!” Helen was crying. “Please, sir, talk to her. Please ma… don’t do this…” Silas lifted his hands slowly like he was approaching a wild animal. “Jare, don’t be ridiculous… Nobody is dying today. Kindly put the knife down.” “No,” I repeated. My hand was shaking so much I could barely hold the knife. “You will not force me. You will not take my child.” “Jade…” “If you touch me,” I whispered, “I swear I will kill myself”. He took one step toward me, and I tightened my grip. “Madam Jade, please don’t!!!” Helen yelled. But the knife had already slipped…
