Jade's pov
"Mr. Thornfield wants to see you in his office right now," my coworker announced and my heart dropped. Had I done something wrong?
"Was he angry?" I asked quietly.
"When isn't he?" She retorted.
"Good point," I nodded as I rose from my chair and made my way towards his office. I was barely two months at Apex Industries and I couldn't afford to lose this job. I needed it to prove a point to my family, to show them all that I was in fact capable of taking over my father's business.
I had overheard my dad that night, telling my stepmother Joan, that he needed an alliance with the CEO of the Apex industries because his business was going bankrupt and whichever of his daughters got that for him, he was going to give the company to her and that is how I ended up here.
I knocked on the door and slowly opened it when I heard a gruff reply from the other side.
"You sent for me, sir?" I asked hesitantly as I stopped in front of his table.
Silas Thornfield was a young and handsome man, not your typical CEO and I remember the shock on my face the first time I had seen him. I had been expecting someone half bald and slouched with a big protruding belly. He was clad in a black tux and his hair was neatly pinned behind his hair just like every other day. He has the stormiest set of grey eyes which seemed to bore into your soul as he stared at you.
"Have you worked on the file I sent you yesterday?" He asked, breaking through my chain of thoughts.
"Yes, I sent them to your secretary last night. I had a few corrections I also wanted to run by you for" I began.
"I just asked you a simple question," he cut me off and my mouth snapped shut. Except for being incredibly handsome, Silas Thornfield was also incredibly rude and cold.
"I've sent the files sir," I informed him.
"When will you be ready to present?" He asked and my eyes bulged.
"Me? I- I didn't think-" I stuttered over my words like a simpleton.
"Isn't that why you are here? At my company? At your interview, you seemed more confident and particularly determined to make your mark and I'm giving you that opportunity now and yet here you are," he noted with a cold expression.
"It's just that this pitch is tomorrow and I had never thought I would get to present one so soon," I explained and he leaned back in his chair with a sigh.
"Do you want the pitch or not?" He asked quietly.
"I want it of course," I shrugged. This was an incredible opportunity and I couldn't let it walk me by.
“I need to impress him, that is the only way I can get his attention.”
"Then I expect nothing short of perfection from you. Every single detail should be in order and if you make one little mistake...you are out." His eyes shone with promise and I nodded frantically. A small part of me couldn't help but wonder if he was doing this because of my step sister, Morgan.
Somehow she managed to become his girlfriend and I’m sure my stepmother had something to do with it.
"Julia will explain-" Silas began just as the door swung open and I cringed as my step-sister strolled into the office as though I had summoned her by thinking about her.
"I missed you so much babe, I thought we could have lunch together," Morgan announced as she strolled towards Silas, completely ignoring me.
"What are you doing here Morgan?" Silas frowned up at her as she stopped beside him and grabbed his head.
"I literally just said I missed you, and also I wanted to remind you about my dad’s celebrity dinner tomorrow," she retorted as she claimed his lips with hers and she let out a throaty moan.
"This is my office, Morgan and in case you haven't noticed, I'm speaking to one of my employees." Silas broke off the kiss and pushed her back.
"It's just Jade, I'm sure she doesn't mind and you have nothing at all to be worried about." Morgan caressed Silas cheek and he caught her hand.
"Whether or not she is your sister, it doesn't change the fact that this is my workplace and I don't tolerate such displays among my staff, much less for myself." Silas roared as he stared at Morgan harshly.
I still wondered how the two of them had found each other and started dating. They were opposites and not in a good way.
"No need to be so harsh about it," Morgan muttered and I almost felt bad for her.
"Go wait for me outside Morgan, I'll be with you in just a moment," Silas told her and Morgan's gaze turned to me thunderously.
"I'll be in the car," she muttered as she knew she couldn't argue with him. She exited the room and I looked up to Silas after a moment.
"Was there anything else?" I asked.
"Is there a reason you left your father's company and you are working for me?" Silas blurted out but then again, he was always known for being blunt.
"I had my personal reasons," I said vaguely and his eyes narrowed into slits.
"Reasons I hope won't harm my company, for your own good more than it is for mine." He continued and I gulped.
"I would never do anything to harm your company, boss," I told him but his face remained blank.
"That is yet to be seen." He muttered.
"Julia will put you through all you need to know and if you have any more questions you can channel it to me through her," Silas told me and I nodded before I turned on my heels.
"And one last thing Jade," Silas called out to me and I turned to him.
"Don't think I'm going to cut you some slack or go easy on you simply because I'm dating your sister," he informed me and my lips twitched.
"Is something funny?" He asked and I quickly hooked my head.
"Nothing sir and I never expected you to cuddle me, that was exactly why I came here...to your company," I explained and he hummed in acknowledgment.
I made my way back to my office and I sighed, I have a long day tomorrow with the pitch and all the preparations going on for the celebratory dinner and I had no idea where to begin...shit.
