“Did you hear about Rune?” Ember asked me.
“Did he finally break up with Lavina? Oh I knew after what he told me he would.” I smiled.
“No! He, Director Magnus and Raina got blown up!”
“Blown up?! Wait, what happened?”
“They’re all in the Infirmary. They almost died! I thought you’d know by now!”
“Oh no!” I ran off, bumping into Joey and Marsden in the process.
“Where’s the fire?” Joey asked as Marsden helped her up.
“Something’s happened to Rune! Sorry I’ll see you later.”
I was out of breath by the time I reached the Infirmary. The Crimsons and Tate were also there.
“Chloey,” Raymond Crimson smiled. “Came to join the party?”
“I’m so sorry. I don’t mean to interrupt.” I said. “I just wanted to see Rune. I-is he okay?”
“He’ll live,” Tate informed me. “Though it was a close call.”
“And Director Magnus and Raina?”
“Both will live,” He assured me. “Um Rune is sleeping right now, but he had been asking about you earlier. I wasn’t sure if I should get you or not.”
Rune stirred in his sleep and lifted his bandaged head slightly. “Chloey, is that you?”
“Hey Rune,” I said, going to his side. “Hi. H-how are you? Oh that’s a stupid question.”
“Better now.” A smile came across his face.
I turned to the others “Um has anyone told Lavina?”
“I don’t think he wants to see her,” Tate whispered.
“He doesn’t want to see his girlfriend?”
“I thought they broke up?” Raymond asked.
“Maybe they did and that’s why he wants to see Chloey instead.” Mr. Crimson suggested.
“Um I should go.” I said. “I’m not his girlfriend and I don’t want to intrude.”
Rune grabbed my hand. “Stay.” He whispered. “Please.”
“I think you’re welcome here.” Raymond grinned.
I barely left Rune’s side the whole weekend. And I held his hand when I wasn’t reading my favorite book to him. I think it made him feel better. He’s slowly starting to become more coherent and able to say more than just a few words at a time. He’s recovering wonderfully.
Cade comes to see me. “I’ve completely lost you haven’t I?” He asked before I ushered him away from Rune’s room.
“Now is not the time to discuss this.” I whispered. “He just survived an explosion. Our relationship is not more important than that!”
“Actually it is! Come back, Chloey, I love you.”
“And I cannot deal with this right now. Rune needs me!”
“I need you!”
“Well I needed you not to lie to me. This is your fault Cade. Now please leave before you distress him!” I turned and walked back to Rune.
“Where’d you go?” Rune muttered.
“Doesn’t matter.” I sat back down, opening the book once more.
The next visitor we get is Lavina. Rune turned pale and shut his eyes quickly. Lavina and I hadn’t run into each other yet.
“And what the hell are you doing with my boyfriend?”
“I’m just reading to him. He asked me to, Lavina.” I responded.
“Oh, so he does wake up?” Lavina questioned. “Rune, I know you’re not asleep!”
“Um...hi.”
“Hi. What is she doing here?”
“Um...comfort?” Rune asked.
“She shouldn’t be comforting you, I’m your girlfriend!”
“Actually you are distressing him!” I exclaimed. “Are you insane? Screaming at someone who’s just been blown up? This isn’t about you Lavina!”
“Anything about Rune is about me!” She yelled. “I should be the one with him so get out of here, you two timing w***e!”
“Excuse me!”
“Oh don’t pretend like you haven’t been trying to take Rune from me while you’re dating Cade. I’m not stupid Chloey.”
“You sure could have fooled me.” I snapped.
“Rune, tell her to leave!” Lavina demanded.
“Leave.” Rune groaned. “Lavina...leave.”
She gasped as I smiled. “You heard him.”
“I am not leaving! You will not break up with me Rune!” She cried.
“It’s over Lavina. It has been for so long. Please just leave me alone.” Rune sighed. “I’m done.”
“This is all your fault!” Lavina screamed at me.
“You’re demented Lavina! Did you ever think he wanted to break up with you because you are absolutely completely insufferable? Because you are! You don’t deserve Rune and you never did. You’re horredous!”
Lavina looked as though I had just slapped her. “Fine. You can have him, I don’t care!” She wailed before running off.
“Your turn.” Rune whispered.
“What do you mean?” I asked, sitting back down.
“Break up with Cade. You and I should be together.”
“Why don’t you get some rest, Rune.”
--
Cade was furious that I still refused to have a proper conversation with him about our relationship. I was still confused and Rune really did need me at the moment. Once Rune was fully recovered I would talk to Cade.
One afternoon I was surprised to see Tate rushed into the Infirmary in the room next to Rune.
“What happened?” I asked Zoey.
“Cade hit Tate with a curse while he was walking down the stairs and he hurt his head,” She said looking worried.
“Like on purpose?”
“Yes, they had an argument and we were walking away and then he just attacked him!”
That’s it.
I went to find Cade. “Did you hurl a curse at Tate and hurt him?”
“Yes.” He whispered.
“On purpose?”
“M-maybe a little.”
“Cade!”
“It’s his fault we’re like this now! I just got angry alright?”
“It’s over.” I whispered.
“You’re breaking up with me?” He asked.
“Yes. I have to. You are not who I thought you were. You're a liar and you hurt my sister’s boyfriend. And you don’t get to blame anyone else for this except yourself. You ruined us Cade. I thought I was going to fall in love with you. I thought you were different.”
“I tried to be for you.”
“Didn’t work.” I breathed.
“Chloey, just give me one more chance. I’m sorry.” Cade begged. “I’ll do anything.”
“I’m sorry, I can’t. I don’t trust you. Good-bye Cade.”
Well I’d done it. Survived my first ever break up. How did Joey break up with boys all of the time? It’s so hard and draining.
I went back to see Rune the next day. He was sitting up in his bed. “Hey, there you are. What happened?”
“I took my turn.” I stated, sitting on the edge of the bed. “I ended things with Cade yesterday.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“H-how do you feel?” Rune asked.
“I don’t know. Sad, relieved, guilty, excited?”
“Excited for what?”
“Whatever comes next.” I said. “See there’s this boy I’ve kind of been crazy about since I met him. And well now he’s single and so am I...and I’m hoping maybe we’ll finally get to go on that date we never had.”
“What if we skipped past the date?” He whispered.
“To wha-” Before I could finish Rune kissed me.
I knew it. I knew there was this undeniable spark between us. I knew if we ever kissed everything in life would finally feel like it made sense. Sure it’s not ideal. We’re in the Infirmary after he’s been blown up and we’re both newly single. But maybe that’s okay.
Maybe we didn’t need things to be perfect.
“I have been wanting to do that since I met you.” Rune smiled. “I’m sorry it took so long.”
“It’s okay. It was worth it.” I kissed him again.
“Mr. Crimson, what did I say about overexertion?” Nurse Amy demanded.
“Sorry, couldn't help myself.” Rune chuckled.
“Does Ms. Rosaria need to leave so that you calm down?”
“Oh, no, I’m sorry.” I said quickly. “We’ll stop. We’ll behave.”
“Alright. But I’m watching you.” She walked away slowly.
“I can’t wait to get out of here so I can kiss you without overexerting myself.”
“Well we can have a little overexerting right?” I grinned.
“Maybe a little.” He looked around before kissing me again.
This was perfect.
