Zoey’s POV
Life was strange without Joey.
It felt slow and quiet. Maybe that was because we didn’t talk much as of late. There wasn’t much to say. Tate’s mom was dead, Joey was gone, Chancellor Magnus had been murdered. Dark Vampiric Warlocks were slowly taking over the Witching Domain.
Tate was a little strange. His mother’s death had completely broken him. He didn’t just want to save the Witching Domain, he wanted revenge for his parents. He worked tirelessly with Hunters to train properly. I barely ever saw him, but when I did, all he wanted to do was have s*x. We barely talked about what had happened.
Chloey was quiet a lot of the time. She didn’t say much, but always seemed like she was thinking really hard. Sometimes she and Rune completely disappeared. I figured that was to be alone together. She also did a lot of reading about the history of the Witching Domain. She said knowledge is the greatest weapon. Magnus seemed to agree with that.
Between teaching me and Chloey more about the blue energy and helping Tate train, he was keeping himself busy after his wife’s death. I tried to talk to him about Marsden and why he didn’t believe me, but he didn’t want to discuss it. He just said he made a mistake and left it at that.
It was such a big mistake to make.
--
This safe house was kind of depressing. It was so dark and drab. But I suppose being safe was more important.
I walked around aimlessly. Sometimes I got so freaking bored here.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” I heard Chloey’s voice. “We’re in enough danger as it is.”
Who was she talking to?
I crept closer. “Rune, don’t be ridiculous!”
Oh of course. Who else would she be talking to?
“Yeah, I love you too.” Chloey sighed.
Why couldn’t I hear Rune’s voice?
“Hey Zoey.” Rune’s voice came from behind me.
“I thought you were in there talking to Chloey?”
“Um…no…but she talks to herself a lot lately. I think it makes her feel a little better, you know? Joey leaving kind of messed her up.” Rune explained.
“Oh, I see. Well she was saying that you’re ridiculous and that she loves you.”
“Sounds about right.” He laughed. “You okay?”
I sighed. “I’m worried about Tate. He’s just throwing himself into all of this and I’m scared he’ll become impulsive.”
“He’s grieving. He was the same way after his dad died. He’s just working through it. He’ll be okay, I know it.”
“Thanks Rune.” I hugged him.
He entered Chloey’s room and closed the door. I could now hear muffled talking behind the door.
I wished Tate and I could talk like that.
--
We made it a point to eat dinner together every night.
As usual, Mom was the last one to arrive.
“I’m so sorry, I’m late.” She sighed. “This war is causing problems everywhere. Who knew being Chancellor was so hard?”
“I’m sure Agatha mentioned it once or twice,” Magnus commented with a smile.
“Yeah, she did actually.”
It was strange that Mom was now the Chancellor of the Witching Domain. I think she’s doing a great job at it.
We started eating in silence. We never had much to talk about. Or I guess no one really wanted to talk.
“Full moon is coming up, so everyone be careful,” Mom warned. “I swear I saw a werewolf during the last one.”
“They’re not really dangerous, Mom.” Chloey informed her. “I’ve done so much reading on them and they’re just as scared of us as we are of them.”
“Oh I highly doubt it.” Tate stated. “The one at Obsidian didn’t seem scared at all. He was a monster.”
“You don’t know that!”
“Babe, calm down,” Rune whispered. “It’s not that big of a deal.”
“Yes it is. We need to stop judging everything just by what we see. They can just be misunderstood. Like-”
“Don’t say her name.” I interrupted. “She’s not misunderstood. She’s a love stuck idiot.”
“Zoey!” Mom scolded. “Don’t talk about your sister that way.”
“She abandoned us just like Dad.”
“You don’t know anything!” Chloey got up and stormed away.
“I’m going to go check on her.” Rune sighed.
“I can’t believe Chloey still looks up to her after all she's done.” I shook my head.
No one else said anything. Dinner continued on quietly and Chloey and Rune never came back to finish.
--
“How was training today?” I asked Tate as he locked our room door.
“Fine,” He kissed me hard. “But I don’t want to talk about that.”
We fell on the bed.
“Wait, Tate can we just talk for a bit?” I whispered.
“You’d rather talk than have s*x?”
“We have s*x all of the time. Would talking be so bad?”
“Can we talk after? Training gets me all worked up and I kind of need to put that energy into something. Making love to you seems like a good way to do that.”
“But we’ll talk afterwards?” I asked.
“Sure,” He kissed me again.
Tate lied. We didn’t talk. He said he was tired and that he had to be up early.
Life was strange.
Joey’s POV
I wore so much black.
It was like black was the official color of the Dark Vampiric Warlocks. I guess it was fitting since it was kind of depressing for me to be one.
I missed my family so much. I was even kind of missing Tate’s annoying presence. Pretending to support the cause of Count Killoran was exhausting.
However, being with Marsden made everything worth it.
“God those meetings are so boring,” Marsden grumbled. “I mean how many times do we have to confirm that we want to take over the world?”
“Until they brainwash you.” I stated.
“Yeah probably.” He kissed me. “I’m so sorry this is our life right now. It’s so f*****g scary.”
“It could be worse. We could be apart.”
“Yeah, that would be ten times worse. I couldn’t live without you.”
“I know the feeling.” I kissed him again, gently pushing him down on the bed.
We took each other’s black clothes off, as we touched and groped each other.
Marsden sighed in content as he pushed himself inside of me. I moaned as my body squirmed and writhed under him. His hand hooked under my thigh pushing deeper in me.
“Oh f**k, Joey!” He groaned. “f**k, you’re so tight.”
“Marsden, harder!” I begged.
He obliged, slamming into me. I slipped my hand in his hair and tugged it hard. He cried out from the pain before sinking his fangs into my neck.
“Oh Marsden!” I whimpered.
Sex lately had been incredibly passionate and bordering on painful. I think we just wanted to feel something.
“I f*****g love you!” Marsden practically howled. “I’m close.”
“I love you more. c*m in me!”
Marsden shook as he spilled into me, breathing heavily. His hair dangled on my nose as we caught our breaths.
“I want to have a baby, Joey.” Marsden murmured.
“Right now? Babe things are bad.”
“We might never get another chance. We should do it while we still can.”
“We’re not even married yet.” I pointed out.
“We don’t have to be married to have kids.”
“But we should be. Marsden this is insane. Our lives aren’t even our own right now! Let’s be smart about this.”
“I am! I want to enjoy life right now!” He insisted. “I want to be a father and a husband.”
“That will happen down the line.” I assured him.
“We don’t know that!”
“I don’t want to argue about this. I’m gonna do some wedding planning okay? I love you.” I kissed him before getting dressed and going down to the study.
I was pretty much the only person who used it. It was like my little hideaway.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
“Chloey?” I asked in my mind.
“Joey! I was getting worried!”
“Don’t be, I’m okay.” I assured her.
“I learned how to talk out loud while talking to you. I hate the silence.” She sighed.
“I’d try that, but I’m always scared of who could hear me. How is everyone?”
“Okay. Zoey is in a pretty foul mood. Mom is working really hard as Chancellor. It’s just so weird not having you here. How is it over there?”
“Dark and depressing. Being a Dark Vampiric Warlock is not as fun as it seems,” I joked.
“How are you really Rune?”
“Rune?” I asked.
“If I’m talking out loud, I think it’s best to use his name just in case.” She informed me.
“You always were the smart one.”
“And you’re the brave one. I can’t believe you’re doing all of this.”
“Anything for the Witching Domain right?” I asked.
There was a knock on the door. “Joey?” Sabrine’s voice asked.
“I have to go Chloey,” I said. “Love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Yes, come in!”
Sabrine entered the room with a strained smile.
“How is the wedding planning coming along?” She asked.
“Really well. I’ll need to go find a dress at some point. Would you and Brielle like to come with me?”
“Of course. How are you doing though, sweetie?”
“It’s been a strange month honestly. I’m not used to being away from my family so much.”
“That’s kind of what I wanted to talk to you about. Family…um. Your father and your brother will be staying here.”
Chloey’s POV
I missed Joey so much.
It was strange that I was always talking to her and yet I couldn’t see her. We’ve thought about meeting, but we think it’s too risky.
I absolutely hated the way Zoey talked about her. I wanted to tell her the truth, but Magnus said it was too early. Especially with Tate’s recent behavior. He seemed kind of unhinged. He was obsessed with training and talked about killing all Dark Vampiric Warlocks.
I don’t think he and Zoey talked very much and I could tell that was upsetting her. I wanted to comfort her but I was kind of annoyed with her right now. Besides, I had to take care of Rune.
“Okay, do you want to be awake or asleep for tonight?” I asked.
“I should be asleep right? So your mom doesn't spot me again?”
“Rune the last time you actually got to go out and do things, you felt so much better when you woke up. I think you need to run around.”
“I just get so scared of hurting you.” Rune whispered. “I’m afraid that the werewolf part of me will completely take over.”
“It won’t. You’re so gentle.” I assured him.
“What are you going to do?”
“Read in the moonlight of course. I love it.”
“I don’t know what I did to get lucky enough to have you.” Rune smiled.
“You were just your amazing self of course.” I kissed him.
“How is Joey?”
“She’s okay. I think she’s having a rough day, but doesn’t want to tell me.”
“I can’t imagine what it’s like over there for her.” He sighed.
“She’s so brave.” I muttered.
“You are too, Chloey. Both of you are sacrificing so much for the Witching Domain. I’m so proud of you.”
It was so nice to hear that from someone.
I think I was proud of me too.
--
Rune and I snuck out of the house right before the moon rose. We went deep into the forest like we did the last time. We found a clearing where the moon would shine brightly.
I looked away as Rune transformed. He said he felt a little insecure when I watched him.
“I’m done,” His deep voice said.
I turned around and saw Rune in his werewolf form. I remembered how scared I was the first time I saw him. Now he was almost a comfort.
“Go have fun,” I smiled.
He nodded before running off. I laid a blanket down and sat against a boulder to read.
I was reading up on the history of Dark Vampiric Warlocks. I was almost done and I swear something in this book could give me some kind of information that would be useful.
In the moonlight I skimmed and read from the book until my eyes finally landed on something that seemed helpful.
The Ligneous Stake.
Now what was that?
--
My eyes were hurting by the time I finished the book. I think I finally knew what to do. I think I really could save the Witching Domain!
Once the sun rose and Rune returned, we hurried back to the safe house. I was dying to tell Magnus about this.
We burst through the front door. Mom was already awake and getting ready for work.
“Where did you two come from?” She asked.
“Can’t talk!” I called, running to Magnus’ room.
I banged on the door like a crazy person.
A few moments later he answered the door looking confused. “Yes, Chloey?”
“I know how to kill Count Killoran!”
