The resort’s main beachfront restaurant glowed under strings of warm fairy lights and hanging lanterns as the sun dipped below the horizon. Gentle waves lapped at the shore just yards away, providing a soothing soundtrack to the welcome dinner. The table was elegantly set with crisp white linens, fresh flowers, and flickering candles that cast soft shadows across everyone’s faces.
Mia had chosen a light, flowing sundress in a soft coral color that clung to her waist and flared gently at the hips. The neckline dipped just enough to be tempting without being obvious. Her long wavy dark hair was swept over one shoulder, and a touch of gloss made her lips shine invitingly.
Lily was already seated, chatting animatedly as Alexander pulled out a chair for her. He looked devastating in a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing those strong, veined hands that had been on Mia’s back only hours earlier.
“You both look amazing,” Alexander said as he took his own seat between them at the round table. His voice was warm, but Mia caught the slight tension in his shoulders.
“Thanks, Dad!” Lily beamed, picking up the menu. “This place is next-level. They have fresh lobster and that coconut rice I saw on the way in. I’m starving.”
Mia slid into her chair directly across from Alexander, her bare foot already brushing lightly against his ankle under the long tablecloth the moment she sat down. She smiled sweetly at the waiter who brought their drinks a crisp white wine for the adults and a tropical mocktail for Lily.
“To an unforgettable two weeks,” Alexander said, raising his glass. His dark eyes met Mia’s as they clinked glasses, and she held the gaze a second longer than necessary.
“To unforgettable things,” Mia echoed softly, her voice carrying just enough suggestion to make his jaw tighten.
Lily took a big sip and launched into conversation. “Okay, so I was talking to that girl at the spa earlier she said there’s a secret cove you can only reach by boat at low tide. We have to go! And the marine biologist guy does night snorkeling with bioluminescent plankton. It sounds like magic.”
“That does sound incredible,” Alexander replied, trying to focus on his daughter. He shifted in his seat as Mia’s foot slowly traveled up his calf, her toes tracing the muscle with deliberate care. “We can book it for tomorrow if you want.”
Mia hid her smile behind her wine glass as her foot reached higher, brushing the inside of his knee. Alexander’s hand tightened around the stem of his glass.
Under the table, the game was on.
“So, what did you two get up to while I was at the spa?” Lily asked, popping a piece of bread into her mouth. “Dad, did you finally relax or were you answering emails again?”
Alexander cleared his throat, his voice a touch rougher than usual. “I… helped Mia with some sunscreen earlier. Then made a few calls. Nothing too exciting.”
Mia’s toes slid higher, pressing against his inner thigh now. She watched his face with innocent eyes while her foot continued its teasing exploration. “He was very thorough, actually. Made sure I didn’t miss any spots. His hands are really strong.”
Lily grinned. “See? I told you Dad gives the best sunscreen applications. He used to do mine when I was little, remember? You’d always complain that I was too squirmy, Dad.”
Alexander forced a chuckle, but his free hand had dropped beneath the table to discreetly catch Mia’s wandering foot. Instead of pushing it away, his fingers wrapped around her ankle, holding it in place against his thigh. The touch sent a thrill straight through Mia.
“I remember,” he said, his thumb stroking the delicate bone of her ankle almost unconsciously. “You never sat still. Mia here was much more… cooperative today.”
Mia bit her lip, heat pooling between her legs at the firm grip on her ankle. She flexed her foot gently against his thigh, feeling the hard muscle tense beneath her.
“The view was nice too,” Mia added casually, taking another sip of wine. “The ocean, the pool, everything. Hard not to get distracted by how beautiful things are here.”
Lily nodded enthusiastically, completely absorbed in the menu. “Right? I swear this place is paradise. Dad, you really outdid yourself this time. I feel like a celebrity.”
Alexander’s grip on Mia’s ankle tightened slightly a silent warning mixed with unmistakable desire. His dark eyes locked onto Mia’s across the table, intense and conflicted. “Paradise can be deceptive,” he said quietly. “Sometimes the most beautiful things come with the highest risks.”
Mia smiled sweetly, her foot still trapped in his grasp but pressing more insistently against him. “I think some risks are worth taking. Don’t you, Alexander? Life’s too short to always play it safe.”
Lily looked up from the menu, missing the undercurrent completely. “Totally agree. Like, I saw this super cute guy at the spa reception. I might try to find him later this week. What about you, Mia? Any guys catching your eye yet?”
Mia’s eyes never left Alexander’s. “There’s someone… very interesting here. Mature. Powerful. Makes my heart race every time he looks at me. I think I’m going to focus all my attention on him this trip.”
Alexander’s breath hitched. He released her ankle but didn’t push her foot away. Instead, his fingers traced lightly up her calf under the table, sending shivers up her leg.
“Sounds like you’ve got a plan,” Lily teased, waving the waiter over to order. “I’ll have the grilled lobster with the coconut rice, please. And extra garlic butter.”
Alexander ordered the seared tuna, his voice steady but his body language anything but. Mia chose the shrimp ceviche, all while her foot continued its slow, teasing movements against his leg, occasionally brushing higher toward dangerous territory.
As the appetizers arrived fresh oysters, calamari, and tropical salads the tension under the table grew thicker. Mia’s toes explored the length of his calf and thigh with increasing boldness. At one point, she pressed her foot firmly against the growing hardness she could feel through his pants.
Alexander nearly dropped his fork.
“Everything okay, Dad?” Lily asked, concerned. “Is the food too spicy?”
He recovered quickly, swallowing hard. “It’s fine. Just… stronger flavor than I expected.” His eyes burned into Mia’s. “You might want to be careful with how much heat you play with, Mia. Some flavors linger longer than you think.”
Mia leaned forward slightly, giving him a tantalizing view down the front of her dress. “I like things with heat. The kind that builds slowly and then overwhelms you completely. Don’t you?”
Lily laughed. “You two are so weird tonight. It’s like you’re having an entirely different conversation. Anyway, back to the cove idea we should pack snacks and make a whole day of it. Dad, you’ll come, right? No working.”
Alexander nodded, his hand now resting on Mia’s foot under the table, his thumb stroking circles on her skin in a way that felt both soothing and incredibly arousing. “I’ll come. Wouldn’t miss it.”
The main courses arrived, and the conversation flowed easily thanks to Lily’s endless energy. She talked about college plans, her excitement for the boat trip, and how much she missed having adventures with Mia like they used to in high school.
Meanwhile, under the table, the secret war continued. Mia’s foot rubbed slowly and deliberately against Alexander’s evident arousal. His fingers gripped her ankle tighter whenever she hit a particularly sensitive spot, his breathing controlled but heavier.
At one point, when Lily was distracted taking photos of her lobster, Alexander leaned forward slightly and spoke in a low voice only Mia could hear.
“You’re killing me here,” he murmured, his dark eyes full of raw hunger and frustration. “If you don’t stop, I won’t be responsible for what happens when we get back to the villa.”
Mia’s heart raced with triumph. She pressed her foot more firmly against him one last time before slowly withdrawing it, giving him a wicked little smile. “Maybe I don’t want you to be responsible tonight, Alexander. Maybe I want you to lose control… just a little.”
Lily looked up, catching the tail end. “Lose control? What are you guys talking about now?”
Alexander cleared his throat and forced a relaxed smile. “Mia was just saying we should try to let loose more on this trip. Be spontaneous.”
“Exactly,” Mia agreed, her voice innocent. “Spontaneous sounds perfect.”
The rest of dinner passed in a haze of delicious food, Lily’s happy chatter, and stolen glances loaded with promise. Every time Alexander looked at Mia, the air between them crackled. The footsie game had left both of them flushed and on edge.
As they finished dessert a decadent mango crème brûlée Lily stretched happily. “This was amazing. I’m so full. I think I’m going to take a quick walk on the beach before bed. You guys coming?”
Alexander stood up, adjusting his shirt. “You go ahead, sweetheart. I’ll walk Mia back to the villa. It’s getting dark.”
Lily hugged them both and headed off toward the water, leaving Mia and Alexander alone at the table.
He offered her his arm, but his grip when she took it was firm, almost possessive. As they walked along the lighted path back to their villa, he spoke in a low, strained voice.
“What you did tonight… that was reckless, Mia.”
She leaned closer, pressing her body lightly against his arm. “But it felt good, didn’t it? Feeling me against you while pretending everything was normal?”
Alexander stopped walking and turned to face her, the villa lights glowing softly behind them. His hand came up to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing her lower lip. “You’re awakening something in me I’ve kept locked away for years. I don’t know how much longer I can fight this.”
Mia rose on her toes, her lips hovering close to his. “Then stop fighting, Alexander. I’m right here. Ready. Wanting you.”
He leaned in, their lips almost touching… then pulled back at the last second with a tortured groan.
“Not yet,” he whispered. “Not like this.”
But as they continued walking, his hand stayed firmly on the small of her back, and Mia knew the dam was cracking.
The welcome dinner had been pure, delicious tension.
And the real night was only just beginning.
