Prologue: The Turning

126 Words
The wild beast crept through the shadows, stalking the young teen on the sidewalk, growling softly,  it's strangely intelligent eyes hinting at the person within. The girl stopped under a streetlight to examine her phone and type in a message. He crept closer very quietly, then leapt out of the shadowy bushes, racing forward on agile paws to sink his jaws into the girl's thigh. She shrieked in surprise then fell to the pavement, convulsing in the pain of the bite, her scream tapering off when consciousness left her side.  The beast stood there for a few minutes, looking at the girl's shaking form, then ran off through the bushes when a car started approaching, glancing back for a brief moment before disappearing into the night.
