Chapter 3

Nathaniel “Damn it. These are quite a lot of stuff to buy,” I murmured after I took a good look at the mountain of groceries. I didn’t bother to check on the list first before I took off. After I entered the supermarket and pulled out the small, that’s when I realized the list was f*****g endless. We were not in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, for Christ’s sake! Jeez, women.  I knew this was my duty – running an errand. The errand boy, of course. Oh, well. I basically went around the supermarket to grab everything on the paper. “You bought a lot today,” the cashier lady commented as I lifted my eyes towards the blonde cashier handling my stuff.  “Tomorrow is important,” I said. “Your girlfriend’s birthday?” “No. She’s a family.” Yeah, I immediately knew why Felicia put a lot on the list.  Because tomorrow is Venus’ birthday. Felicia was planning to cook dinner for tomorrow night, even baking.  As for me, I had something in mind and I thought Venus would probably be happy about it. “The total is a hundred and ten,” she informed. I handed my credit card. The lady deliberately touched my finger I mentally rolled my eyes. Well, I was fully aware of how I affected women in my life. I didn’t mean to be overconfident but I knew how good-looking I was. Smile at them and they would down on my feet, ready to worship me.  Unfortunately, I was not interested.  Women were bothersome. Take a look at Felicia. Okay, maybe she was not a great example of why I didn’t bother to look for a partner in crime. As for Venus, well, she was nice, she didn’t give me a lot of hard times. When she was taken away, I didn’t think that it would be bothersome for me to get her back. Like, not at all. The simplest reason would be I hadn’t found the one. And I was not in the mood to look for one. Not when I was at war. Maybe I won’t have one for the rest of my life. I had sworn to protect Venus until my dying breath. And as long as Micah was out there, I couldn’t rest a bit. “Here you go,” she gave me the card back. “Listen, I was wonder—” “Thanks.” I grabbed all my groceries before she could say a word. I knew her sneaky move. Ask me if I was seeing someone which maybe she already found out when I said Venus was a family. And then ask my number or slip through hers before I ran away. Not a chance. I headed to my GMC, unlocking the truck, and put all the groceries in the back before depositing myself behind the wheel. Punching the pedal back home. The distance was not that far but sometimes I glanced to the back to see if I was allowed. Six months after our escape from Micah, nobody had found us, and I thanked Heaven above for that. I smirked to myself.  I had abandoned the paradise for centuries and I was being thankful to them.  How f*****g ridiculous. Comical. Heaven was not my place.  The land of the pure was not my area. I was not allowed.  I kicked myself out before even God asked me to return. Well, if he had ever asked me to come back, I would tell him to f**k off. Being an angel didn’t mean I would hold back my mouth. I had been living hell on earth. I didn’t need to go to Hell to feel the burning fire, to feel the pain – I had faced that here.  I had seen how Heaven looked like before. It was so serene and peaceful and I felt disgusted by it. The land was full of lies. Funny that I was an angel yet I despised the promised land. Well, I loathed Hades’ land as well.  I was a half, after all. Nobody wanted me by their side. Not to the demons, especially the angels. They were terrified of the impure. Devils hated the white. And I was the result of those. How lucky. Or not. Everything happened because my bastard father f****d my angelic mother. And I was the cause of that. With me like this, I knew I was an offspring of the parents who didn’t love each other. My father was a w***e. He couldn’t take his eyes off my beautiful mother. And probably my angelic mother was desperate for love so she let a devil consumed her and threw her away. She thought he was the one. She thought she could change a demon. But she was wrong. Everything was just an illusion to her.  God kicked her out. Her beloved demon left her. She had nothing. She had me but she abandoned me. She was not an angel anymore when she touched the earth. I didn’t know how it happened but she was gone. Turned into dust while feeling unloved and alone. Pity her but I felt nothing. It was the cause of her doing anyway. She lost with her darkness. She had no right to be called an angel anymore.  As for me, I embraced the darkness within me. I used my angelic side to love Venus as my own sister. Even though Felicia could be as annoying as hell, I loved her too. Grant too even though we had a lot of differences in the past before I allowed him to be the part of my cycle, to be the part of Venus’ life. And I let him die and even until today, I still regretted that. I made Venus cry and in despair because of my incapability to protect the man she loved. So, this time, I won’t fail anymore.  I turned right, heading deep to the forest, and with my hand – I opened the invincible barrier as my truck entered. Automatically closing once I was inside. No one would know that we were living in the forest. From the outside, it looked like a creepy jungle. I parked the car and shut off the engine. Felicia walked out as I threw myself out of the truck. “Hey, you,” she greeted playfully. I scowled. “You owe me a hundred dollars, lady.” She laughed.  “Thank you, Nathan,” she said, ignoring my taunt attempt before she opened the back door and grabbed some of the bags. I helped as well. “Where’s Venus?” “In the back at the river.” “Again?” “She loves it there. And she looks peaceful I don’t want to wake her up,” she explained.  We both entered the house. “How long she’s been there?” I asked. Felicia put the bags on top of the dining table before she responded, “Almost an hour.” “Is it okay to leave her there?” “She’s fine, Nathan. And she’s within your barrier range.” “We can’t let our guards down,” I countered while harshly putting the bags on the table. “We can’t do that just because now it’s peacetime for us.” Her blue eyes were on me. “I know that but I just checked on her before I went to you. She’s still there and if you’re worried, you can pick her up.” She pulled herself from me. I sighed as I headed to the window on top of the sink and saw Venus was still there, reading her book. I exhaled in relief. “Stop being so paranoid, Nathan. I know we’re all scared if Venus got taken away again. Especially, right under our eyes.” I slowly turned to Felicia, finding her smiling sadly. “I can’t lose her again,” I confessed. “You won’t. I won’t. Venus is safe with us. I’ve promised that to her parents’ grave and Grant’s.” “I’ve promised them too.” I looked back at Venus, seeing her eyes were directed to the book. The side of her lips lifted. What she was reading about? My eyes went down and with my perfect eyesight, I smiled. The Notebook. Girls. Those types of stories they always read. Drowning themselves in the story, hoping it would happen to them. To Venus. I wanted the best for Venus. She must be bored already living her life here. Never go out. Never see the outside world again. Venus hated that before. Although she had said that she understood that it was indeed. Deep down, she wanted to go out again. Even just for a little bit. That’s why I had decided.  I turned around to Felicia again. “I’ll be taking her out tomorrow. And hour, that’s it.” A smile beamed on her face. “She will be glad. Tomorrow is important to her.” “She already asked us to not make it big.” “It won’t. Just a cake and a simple dinner. Just the three of us.” I sensed how hard Felicia was to push out of the words. Just the three of us. It used to be the four of us.  Now that Grant won’t be here, physically, I was sure his soul would be here to celebrate his loved one’s birthday.  “I’ll make lunch now. We got a lot to do tonight,” Felicia said.  I smirked and looked back at Venus. “I will make sure you will be happy tomorrow, Morning star.”
