Killian’s POV
Over the months the pack has been training much more than ever before. Mika excelled at everything, but she still hasn’t accessed any powers nor has she shifted yet. I can’t help but think that when she leaves here she will be able to take care of herself and live a normal human life. It is what she wants.
That woman who said she wanted to kill Mika seems to stay in my dreams. These dreams I have of her fill me with love rather than hatred. I feel like I should know this woman, but I don’t.
Cassandra, the woman looks to be about twenty. She must have been turned when she was round about twenty years old. I wonder how long she has lived. And how on earth did she end up being the master of the vampires. There is still so much we do not know about them and it is scary, never knowing what to expect from them.
“Hey Daddy,” Mika greeted as she walked into the office and kissed my cheek before making herself comfortable on the chair in front of my desk. Jayden got in another desk in his office, we have been working closely together because there is a lot that we still need to figure out.
Jayden harrumphed, a touch of a smile was on his lips as Mika got up and moved over to him.
She gave him a hug and messed up his hair a bit. “Heyo, Uncle Jayden.”
Mika has become one of the family. Not only has she been training non-stop, she has also been learning as much as she can about werewolf history and the pack’s history. That includes Skye’s history. Mika has also found that she can pick up languages fast. Alex started teaching her Latin and Hebrew, while she took Spanish classes at school. Not to mention she already knows how to speak French. My little girl is not so little anymore. She can already speak more languages than me and she can knock an Alpha on his ass. She proved that with Jayden, something that he still complains about.
“How was school?” Jayden asked Mika, I think he just found his excuse for taking a small break.
We had been pouring over all the reports that we have gotten of vampire sightings, trying to figure out what their plans are. My eyes are starting to hurt, I can’t imagine how Jayden must feel. He has pack business and this war with the vampires that he needs to focus on. The man must be running on fumes. “You know, the usual.” Mika answered with a shrug. She was staring out the window, her gaze focused on something that I couldn’t see. She looked sad. That look of sadness has been in her eyes for months now and I can’t do anything about it because she won’t tell me anything.
“Right. Are you going to tell us what is bothering you?” Jayden asked as he leaned back in his chair and narrowed his eyes at Mika.
She smiled at him and then leaned down and kissed his forehead. “There is nothing to say.”
Jayden sighed and ran a hand over his face. “Your father might kill me for saying this but you should talk to him. The tension between the two of you have been driving some of us here crazy.”
What tension?
Who the hell is Jayden talking about?
“I am sorry but there is nothing to talk about with him, we have said everything we needed to say to each other.” Mika hugged herself as she continued to stare out the window.
I got tired of wondering who they were speaking about.
I moved closer to Mika to see who she was staring at. What I saw was a shirtless Kyle teaching a group of male pups how to fight with steel batons. It must be one of the pups. They are all about the same age as Mika.
Then Kyle looked up and it seemed like he was staring directly at Mika. Then he went back to training the pups.
“I should go train.” Mika said and then ran out of the office.
“What was that all about?” I asked Jayden.
“If you are asking me that, I suggest you start paying more attention to what is going on around in the pack instead of thinking about that vampire.” Jayden replied with a shake of his head.
“What are you talking about?” He couldn’t possibly know that I have not stopped thinking about Cassandra, somehow that name just doesn’t fit her.
“I am talking about Cassandra and you bloody well know that.” Jayden growled. “That woman was here and then gone again months ago. You need to pull your head out of your ass and start focusing.”
“I am focused.” I growled back. Jayden laughed at me and shook his head. “If that was true you would notice that Mika has been walking around with a chip on her shoulder. You can practically smell the sadness coming off of her.”
Jayden was right, I need to stop thinking about Cassandra. She is nowhere near me and thoughts of her never left my mind.
Kyle’s POV
When I spotted Mika in the Alpha’s office I swear my heart must have stopped for a second. She looks so broken and it is all my fault. I train her and we keep conversation to a minimum. When she is not training with me she seems to be training with someone else. I still haven’t found out who it is she trains with when she doesn’t train with me.
She is strong and willful. She fights with abandonment as though she has nothing to lose and that frightens me. If she is not careful, she can get seriously hurt. I have noticed some bruises on her body which she mostly hides under long sleeve shirts and jeans.
After she spars with one of the pups, usually one of the males, I take him for an extra little one-on-one training. These pups seem to forget that Mika is still just human and that she doesn’t heal like they do.
Mika picked up a pair of steel batons and twirled them around as she tried to find a partner to spar with, but there was no one else available. She faced me and caught me following her movements.
“So Teach, you going to train me or what?” She asked. She had changed into a pair of yoga pants and a long-sleeved light green t-shirt.
I admit that today is a bit cloudy, but it is still too warm for what she is wearing.
“I think you should take it easy today and work on the moves I showed you yesterday.” I said and then walked through the group of pups.
“Whatever you say,” Mika said. She twirled the batons and then attacked me. I managed to dodge her attacks. I could practically feel it touch me even though she missed.
It looks like she is finally going to take her anger out on me.
“Mika.” I said in a tone that hopefully sounded more like a warning than a groan.
“What? I am just doing what you said I should do.” Mika said as she continued to twirl her batons and stare at me.
“I suggest you find someone else to practice with or wait until someone becomes available.”
“I have homework that I need to get back to soon. I can’t wait.” Mika said, she was defying me in front of everyone else. The pups all stopped practicing so that they could watch what is going on between Mika and me.
“I’ll tell you what. If you can beat Mitchell and Dev then we can see if you ready to spar with me.”
I told her and nodded towards the two boys. I crossed my arms because hoping that this will help me not want to rip the two boys heads off if they hurt Mika.
“Sure. “ Mika smirked and then turned her attention to the boys.
They tried attacking her one at a time but she moved fast and then began taunting them. I must admit that I was impressed by her technique and speed. She was doing things that I have not taught yet. The only reason I am doing this training with batons is because Jayden suggested it.
It won’t be long till he sees my reasoning behind suggesting stick fighting again. We are surrounded by woods, a stake through the heart will kill a vampire instantly.
The pups were getting agitated with Mika. They seemed to be communicating through the mindlink.
They attacked together and Mika managed to duck down just in time before they knocked off her head and hit her in the chest. Mika used batons to knock them off their feet. I could feel my own anger grow. That attack could have killed Mika. They aimed for her head! I had to plant my feet in the ground. It took everything in me not to bash those pups heads in.
“Wow boys, that was close. Luckily for me you are slow.” Mika taunted and then flashed them a flirty smile. A smile they have no right being on the receiving end of.
They growled and again went to attack again, they were a good thirty meters away from Mika and ran towards her. Mika ran towards them as well. She then jumped and did a dive through the boys when Dev was on his knees aiming an attack at her knee and Mitchell once again aimed for her head. She dove right through the narrow space between the two batons. Mika landed on one knee and let out a little huff.
Those pups did it this time.
I uncrossed my arms and took one step towards Mitchell and Dev, only to be stopped by the glare that Mika shot me. She definitely didn’t look like she was pissed at the pups as much as she was angry at me. She gently put the batons down on the ground beside her and stood up. Her back still to the pups.
“Is that really all you got?” Mika taunted.
I noticed that her hands were clenched into fists and they were white.
Just then I noticed that Jace, Killian and Jayden run out of the pack house. Each of them wore identical facial expressions they were ready to rip the pups apart. I almost feel sorry for them.
But then again I too am more than willing to tear both of them a new hole each.
I watched the three men and hoped they would catch my stare. When Killian saw me and watched as I shook my head he nodded and stopped Jayden and Jace.
Mitchell and Dev didn’t seem to notice the three alphas that had just arrived. They were both growling and they shared a look. As Mitchell took Dev’s baton in his other hand he ran over to Mika to attack while Dev ripped off his shirt and took off his pants then shifted into his mousy brown wolf.
Mika dodged each and every one of Mitchell’s attacks, then she dropped down to her knees and kicked out, knocking Mitchell off his feet. She rolled on top of him and landed in a sitting position on top of him with her legs on either side of him. Just as Mitchell lifted the baton in his right hand ready to swing at Mika’s head, Dev launched towards Mika.
I swear my heart stopped.
A person could hear a pin drop in the silence that ensued as the attack was happening.
Mika fell back and just like that Mitchell lifted the baton and missed her by mere inches Dev’s attack missed her as well and Dev got whacked by the baton in the snout. Mika got back into a proper sitting position and delivered one hell of a right hook to Mitchell. She knocked him out and then stood up. Her feet still on either side of Mitchell’s body, she looked around at the pack members who were around. She was breathing hard. I focused on every rise and fall of her chest to help control my own breathing. She shook her head and then did something that I doubt any of us expected. She took two steps back, pulled her leg back and kicked Mitchell in the one place no man ever wants to be kicked.
Several winces and comments sounded around us.
I was watching everyone else’s responses to what she did to Mitchell and when my eyes landed on her again. I cringed. The look she shot me spoke volumes. It took everything in me to prevent myself from cupping myself from any attack or pain she wishes to inflict upon me. Dev got up and growled at her. He was still in wolf form. Mika rolled her eyes and then walked slowly towards Dev.
“Do you really want to do this Dev?” Mika asked and placed her hands on her hips. She looked as though she couldn’t give two hoots about the pup.
Mika is one scary girl.
Dev growled.
“Have it your way.” Mika sighed.
Then she did yet another extremely unexpected thing. She got down onto her knees and held her arms stretched out.
What is she doing?
“I tell you what, if you can kill me. All the powers inside of me is yours.” Mika said and shook her head and a tear fell down her cheek.
None of this makes sense what is she doing? What is she talking about?
Then it hit me. I have seen this before. She is willingly offering her powers to another. It doesn’t even take a spell to transfer powers. All Dev has to do is kill her.
That’s it. Not anymore.
I tried to move towards Mika to stop this foolishness, but I couldn’t move.
I noticed that neither could Jace, Jayden and Killian. We were all stuck. Then Alex appeared and he was shooting daggers from his eyes at Mika.
“What does she think she is doing?” Alex asked.
“That is what I want to know.” I grunted out. “You know something. Don’t you.”
“Yeah, she took a trip into the past but instead of just going into the past, she found herself in an alternative present as well and a future that she won’t talk about.” Alex ground out.
“Why are we stuck?” I asked trying to fight against the invisible bonds.
“Because we want to save a willing sacrifice.”
Damn it. I screamed at Mika, praying that she would stop this foolishness. Then Dev shifted and he shook his head. He walked up to Mika then pulled her to her feet and then knelt before her.
Something happened and nobody knows what to do.
Mika had a broad smile on her face then she pulled Dev up to his feet and hugged him.
Now I growled for a whole other reason. That pup may not touch what is mine!
Mika’s POV
From the looks that everyone keeps shooting me, I am pretty sure everyone wants to skin me alive.
They might never understand why I did what I did. but the test needed to be done. The alternative present life I saw last night revealed things to me I would never be able to tell anyone.
My mother made a choice. She didn’t just choose for herself, she chose for everyone. Then again, tonight would have been the night she killed me. Maybe in this life she will still kill me tonight.
Dev and I always should have been friends and I need him in my life. In the alternative life I saw, we were mates. I don’t understand how it is that he is not my mate now. I will never fully understand anything, but I can make do with what I do understand.
“Mika, you have some explaining to do.” My father grunted out rather loudly before pulling me into his arms.
“I can’t lose you baby girl. I can’t.” I could hear the cry in his voice that he was keeping back.
“I love you daddy.” I whispered back. “I need to go shower.”
I pulled away and ignored the glare that Jace was shooting at me. I made it to my room and when my room door shut behind me, I closed my eyes and felt my knees give out under me. I stayed like that and cried.
I needed to cry. Tonight at midnight I might be killed. Even though I have no powers, except for hindsight, I have been practicing an incantation this whole day.
I needed to test Dev. He passed and now if I do die, the energy I have inside of me will be transferred to Dev. The powers will open up to him easily. They won’t be blocked as they are with me. The process will be slow, but it won’t be long.
SIX HOURS LATER
It is a little past eleven, Halloween is nearly over and soon I will be eighteen and dead. Jace and I managed to get Jayden and daddy to agree to throw a Halloween party that will go on to our birthday. They agreed when they both realized I have never done anything like this before.
I dressed like a belly dancer. I know I jingled with each move, but it was cool. After watching a couple of belly dancing videos on YouTube I learned quite a few moves. I let my hair hang loose and fall down my back.
I was pouring myself a glass punch when Dev approached me. I must admit Dev is a hottie, with his grey eyes, dark brown nearly black hair and a tanned complexion. Not to mention the boy has a killer smile that can make a girl weak in the knees. Dev was walking around in a fire-fighter’s uniform, the sexy version of the uniform.
“I must admit, a man in a uniform is seriously hot.” I joked and smiled at Dev hoping that he knows that there are no hard feelings between us.
Dev grinned sheepishly. “I am sorry about the way Mitchell and I went about the sparring match.”
“Don’t be, you two got an almost perfect system.” I said then gulped down my glass of punch.
“Are you going to ask me to dance or stand there like a fool?”
Dev held out a hand towards me and I accepted. He led me to the dance floor and out of the corner of my eye. I saw Kyle leaning against a wall. He stood there with his arms crossed.
Dev and I danced to a slow song and a whole bunch of other songs that left me feeling a little winded.
“Hey, I believe it is your birthday.” Jace said from behind me. he was grinning at me and held something behind his back.
“I think it is, the birthday boy.” I stood on my toes and wrapped my arms around his neck.
Don’t fall apart just yet. Jace hugged me back.
“Happy birthday Mika.” Jace said when I let go of him and he handed me a long thin box.
When I opened it, I nearly burst into tears.
Jace got me a gold necklace. The pendant was an intricate, almost Celtic design.
“Alex helped me with the design. It means twins, but it is also kind of a protective charm. I got Alex to spell it.” Jace explained.
I took the necklace out of the box and held it out for Jace to take. I turned around and lifted up my hair so that he could clasp the necklace around my neck.
“I love it.” I said and then turned around and grinned at him. “Your present is in my room, let me run up and get it.”
I walked away from him, and then started running but I was running away from the pack house.
I was following the map in my head to the place where I saw I would be killed.
In truth, Jace’s gift is in my room along with a letter addressed to everyone explaining everything.
I get it.
I am a coward. I couldn’t face telling the people I love that I am going to die tonight. I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye to them or to put them in any danger.
I ran and I just kept running. The sandals I wore I kicked off back at the party.
All of a sudden I was pulled to a stop and then pushed against a tree. It was a full moon, but still
I couldn’t see anything.
This is it.
I gulped, but then I felt warmth against my face.
“Why did you run Mika?” A voice asked a voice I have not been able to escape.
“You wouldn’t understand.” I replied.
He makes me want to forget everything that I have already decided on.
How could he do this to me?
Kyle let out a low growl.
“I love you Kyle.” I raised my knee and hit him hard enough to make him groan and let go of me. When he let me go I ran. At least I tried to run, but I was pulled back and pushed against the tree once again. This time instead of saying anything, Kyle kissed me. He pried my lips apart with his tongue and deepened the kiss.
I never thought a kiss could feel this good. The way my body molds to his and the way he tastes.
The man definitely knows how to kiss a girl senseless. I moaned and then wrapped my arms around his neck. I wanted to be closer to him.
“You are not leaving me.” Kyle growled as he lifted me up. I am not sure what happened next but even though I am pretty sure that we were moving it didn’t feel like it. When I pulled away from Kyle, a glint caught my eye. Make that his wings. Wings I once saw in a vision.
I tried to touch it as it flapped but then I pulled my hand away. I could tell that Kyle was watching me intently. Waiting for me to make my next move. To see how I would react to his wings. I placed my hand on his cheek and smiled.
I wanted him. I need him.
“Make me yours.” I whispered.
