WHISPERS AND WARNINGS The tension in the house was thick. I stayed in the guest room, avoiding Adrian as much as possible. One morning, he was already in the kitchen when I came down. “Evelyn,” he said, setting his coffee down, “we can’t keep living like this. You resigned without any real explanation. Talk to me.” I poured myself a cup. “I told you. I’m tired. I need space.” “Space?” He stepped closer. “You’re living in the guest room of our own house. People at the office are asking why you suddenly left. What am I supposed to tell them?” “Tell them whatever you want,” I replied. “It doesn’t matter anymore.” He ran a hand through his hair. “It does matter. You matter. I don’t understand why you’re shutting me out.” I didn’t answer. I took my coffee and went back to the guest room
