Chapter Two – The Pull Between Worlds

1099 Words
--- Xavier The scent haunted him. It wasn't perfume. Not flowers. Not the smoke and blood that usually clung to his world. It was something purer. Earth. Fire. Rain-soaked soil on a spring morning. But it didn’t belong in his world—and that was the problem. Xavier Moretti stood in the heart of his domain—a massive glass office overlooking the harbor, surrounded by men trained to kill at a glance. Yet all he could think about was a scent carried by the wind. A scent that called to something buried deep inside him. Alessio leaned against the wall, arms folded. “Still nothing?” Xavier didn’t answer. He’d spent the last twenty-four hours combing the city for a whisper, a trace, anything to explain the shift. Nothing. Just tension under his skin. His wolf pacing. Agitated. Awake. “She’s close,” he muttered. Alessio tilted his head. “Who?” Xavier’s eyes glowed faintly. “I don’t know.” --- Lily Lily stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. She didn’t look different. Not really. Same auburn curls. Same midnight blue eyes. But something was off. Her skin prickled under the fluorescent light. Her fingertips tingled. The scent of paint still clung to her hair, but stronger than that was a hum just beneath her skin—like a radio tuned to a frequency no one else could hear. She splashed water on her face and gripped the sink. Her reflection flickered. Just for a second. And in that flicker, she saw herself—wild-eyed, feral, with gold in her irises and shadows twisting behind her. She stumbled back. No. No, no, no. It was stress. Too much caffeine. Not enough sleep. She hadn’t told anyone about the changes. Not her mom. Not her brother. They’d just worry. Or worse—ask questions she couldn’t answer. So instead, she did what she always did. She painted. --- Xavier The warehouse smelled of blood and gasoline. It was an old meat-packing plant on the edge of the industrial district. Xavier hated meeting here, but the message had to be clear. He didn’t tolerate betrayal. The man in front of him—Eli Torres, low-level runner, former loyalty—was on his knees. His face was a mess of bruises, his hands bound behind his back. “You sold information to the De Luca syndicate,” Xavier said flatly. Eli shook his head, blood dripping from his nose. “I didn’t—boss, I swear, I didn’t mean—” “You didn’t mean to, or you didn’t do it?” Xavier asked, voice like ice. “I—I needed the money. My sister—she’s sick.” Xavier’s jaw flexed. “Your loyalty should never have been for sale.” He turned away, gave a simple nod. A gun c****d behind him. One shot. Clean. Silence followed. Xavier lit a cigar and didn’t look back. The scent still lingered. And for the first time in years, something deeper than violence burned through him. Desire. Instinct. Need. --- Lily Lily sat in the back of the library again, where the rain tapped gently on the windows and students whispered over textbooks. She should have been studying. But instead, her hands moved of their own accord, sketching shadows on her notepad. A figure. Tall. Lean. Power pouring off him. She didn’t know his name, but she knew him. Felt him. His presence haunted her even when her eyes were open. Every night, he came closer in her dreams. And every night, her heart beat faster. She was drawn to him in ways that made no sense. But worse? She was starting to think he was real. --- That night, she walked home alone. Her brother had a shift at the gas station. Her mom was visiting their aunt in a nearby town. The streetlights buzzed overhead as she crossed the quiet intersection near the park. She paused. Something wasn’t right. Her skin tightened. Her heart stuttered. She looked over her shoulder. No one. But her instincts screamed otherwise. She walked faster. Footsteps echoed behind her. She didn’t wait to see who it was—she ran. Heart thundering. Breath coming in sharp bursts. She rounded the corner— —and slammed into a solid chest. Strong hands caught her. She gasped, looking up. A man she’d never seen before. He was tall. Too tall. Dressed in black. Clean-cut jaw. Sunglasses even in the dark. “You okay, miss?” His voice was smooth. Too smooth. Her breath caught. Her instincts screamed again—not danger… but unfamiliarity. Like he didn’t belong here. “I—I’m fine,” she muttered, stepping back. The man gave her a tight smile and walked past. She didn’t turn around until she reached her door. Didn’t breathe until she was inside. And even then, her heart wouldn’t settle. Something was coming. She could feel it. --- Xavier He saw her. Not her face. Not her body. But the shape of her aura. It bloomed in his mind like firelight, flickering at the edge of his consciousness as he traced the city's ley lines. “She’s awakening,” he whispered. “Who?” Alessio asked again, exasperated. Xavier finally turned. “A hybrid.” Alessio went still. “You’re sure?” “No,” Xavier admitted. “But I can feel it.” Hybrid bloodlines were rare. Supposed to be extinct. Humans mated to shifters—most never survived the transformation. Those who did were hunted. Feared. Hidden. But she was here. In his city. And whether she knew it or not, she was waking up. Which meant every supernatural force nearby would be sniffing her out. Including those who’d love nothing more than to tear her apart. His jaw clenched. She didn’t even know who she was. But she belonged to him now. And he would find her. --- Lily The dreams became vivid. He was always there—watching her from the forest. Closer now. A step nearer every time. She could feel his breath in the wind. Hear his voice in the rustle of the leaves, though she couldn’t make out the words. She wasn’t afraid of him. She should have been. But the closer he got, the safer she felt. She woke up with gold flickering in her eyes and her bedsheets tangled around her like vines. She barely recognized her own reflection anymore. Something was changing inside her. And deep down, Lily knew—this wasn’t just about dreams. Something ancient was rising in her blood. ---
