chapter 11

The kiss was everything she had been longing for and everything she had been afraid of. It wasn't a firework display or a Hollywood moment; it was something deeper, a quiet, profound reunion of two souls that had been adrift for far too long. His lips were soft, firm, and familiar, and his hand on the back of her neck held her as if she were the most precious thing in the world. As he pulled away, their foreheads rested against each other, the air between them thick with a silent understanding. "One day at a time," he repeated, his voice husky with emotion. "Starting tomorrow." Over the next few weeks, "one day at a time" became their mantra. They fell into a comfortable rhythm, a routine that felt both new and old. Lunch was no longer a rushed business affair but a chance to talk about anything and everything—childhood memories, silly dreams, and the simple things they loved. They discovered that while their lives had diverged dramatically, their core values remained the same. They both valued hard work, loyalty, and a good sense of humor. They laughed more, and the laughter was a gentle, healing balm on the wounds of their past. Isabella found herself looking forward to seeing him every morning, a giddy anticipation she hadn't felt since she was a teenager. He no longer felt like the intimidating tycoon from their first meeting, but simply as Alex—the boy who used to draw her in his sketchbook, the man who now held her hand under the table during a business dinner. One Friday afternoon, as they were wrapping up a meeting, Alexander’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, a small frown creasing his brow. "I have to fly to Tokyo for a few days," he said, the words heavy with reluctance. "An emergency board meeting." A pang of disappointment, sharp and unexpected, pierced through her. "Oh," she said, trying to hide her feelings. "Right. The tycoon's life." He saw the look on her face and immediately reached for her hand. "Hey. It’s just a few days. I’ll be back before you know it." He brought her hand to his lips, a small, intimate gesture that made her heart race. "I'll call you as soon as I land. And the minute I get back, we're having a proper date. No talk of blueprints or market projections. Just us." As he walked away, a sense of unease settled in her stomach. It was a familiar feeling, one she had spent years burying. The fear of being left behind again, of waking up and finding he was just a dream. She told herself she was being paranoid. He was a different man. Their circumstances were different. But as she watched him disappear into the elevator, the old, haunting echoes of a goodbye that never came returned, and for the first time in a long time, she felt utterly alone.
