chapter 16

The private jet touched down on the tarmac, and the cold efficiency of Alexander's world enveloped them. He didn't take her to his penthouse, but to a secure, inconspicuous townhouse in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood. Inside, Marcus was already waiting, along with two other members of the security team and a corporate lawyer, a grim-faced woman named Evelyn. The air was thick with a focused, almost military-like purpose. Isabella felt a shiver, a mixture of fear and awe, as she watched Alexander transform. The man who had held her just an hour ago was gone, replaced by the CEO, his mind a steel trap of logic and strategy. He laid out the situation with a chilling clarity. "We have two objectives," he stated, his voice a low, commanding presence in the room. "First, to retrieve the stolen data. The security system schematics were a year of Isabella's work, and the digital blueprints are crucial. Second, to expose Richard Sterling and use this to finally force him out of the company." Isabella, seated at the large conference table, was no longer just a victim. She was an essential part of the plan. She explained the complexity of the schematics, the unique encryption, and the vulnerabilities of the system. She spoke with a newfound confidence, her mind racing, excited by the challenge. Evelyn, the lawyer, shook her head. "We can't just accuse him, Alexander. He'll deny it, and we have no proof. He's too powerful, too well-connected." "We'll get the proof," Alexander said, his gaze fixed on Isabella. "We need to lure him into a trap. We need to make him confess, or better yet, prove his guilt by his own actions." "How?" Marcus asked. Isabella thought for a moment, her gaze falling on a small, red, blinking light on a security camera in the corner of the room. An idea, wild and brilliant, sparked in her mind. "We tell him we have a backup. We tell him the drive he stole was a fake." Alexander's eyes lit up. "And we make the 'real' one impossible for him to access. We plant a tracker on it, or a kill switch that will expose him when he tries to use it." "Exactly," Isabella said, her confidence growing. "We could have a remote signal that, when he tries to access the data, it triggers a virus that sends a copy to your secure server and then wipes his." For the next several hours, they worked tirelessly. They mapped out the fake drive's payload, designed a foolproof tracking system, and planned the perfect setting for their confrontation. The gala was their chosen venue, a public stage where Sterling, confident in his victory, would be at his most vulnerable. Isabella, the "damsel in distress," would be the perfect bait. "We'll need to plant the fake drive on him without him knowing," Marcus said, his mind already working on the logistics. "No," Isabella said, her voice firm. "We'll let him think he still has the real one. He'll make a public show of his triumph. We'll confront him with our 'dummy drive' story. The real drive will be his undoing." Alexander looked at her, a profound sense of admiration and pride in his eyes. She wasn’t just the woman he loved. She was a brilliant, strategic partner. In that moment, he knew he wasn't just fighting to protect her; he was fighting beside her. "This is it, Izzy," he said, his hand finding hers under the table. "One chance. You and me." She squeezed his hand, her fear replaced by a cold, hard resolve. "You and me," she affirmed, a promise and a threat wrapped in one. They were ready. The trap was set. Now, all they had to do was wait for their prey to walk right into it.
