Chapter Five: The Dragon’s Inheritance

The crimson eyes opened fully. The mountains trembled. Entire cliffs collapsed into the valleys below. Soldiers from both sides stared in horror as a massive shadow rose from the shattered prison beneath the earth. The Dark Dragon had awakened. Its scales were blacker than night. Cracks of crimson fire spread across its body like molten veins. Its wings stretched wider than the castle walls of Blackthorn. Every breath released smoke and shadow. Every movement shook the land. Aria felt fear unlike anything she had ever known. Beside her, the golden dragon lowered its head. “The legends were true.” The Shadow Mage laughed triumphantly. At last, his plan had succeeded. “Bow before your king!” The Dark Dragon’s crimson eyes turned toward him. For a brief moment, the Shadow Mage smiled. Then the creature opened its mouth. A blast of black fire erupted. The Shadow Mage barely escaped. His smile vanished instantly. The dragon wasn’t obeying him. It wasn’t serving anyone. It wanted only destruction. “No!” the Shadow Mage shouted. The Dark Dragon roared. The sound shattered nearby stone pillars. Soldiers fled in every direction. Even the Shadow Mage’s army abandoned the battlefield. The monster spread its wings and rose into the sky. Dark clouds gathered around it. The world seemed to darken beneath its shadow. Aria looked toward the golden dragon. “What do we do?” The ancient dragon’s eyes met hers. “You must claim the inheritance.” “The Crown of Flames?” “Yes.” The golden dragon lowered itself. “Climb on.” Aria froze. “You want me to ride a dragon?” A faint amusement echoed through its voice. “There is a first time for everything.” Valen smiled despite the danger. “Your father would have loved to see this.” Aria took a deep breath. Then climbed onto the dragon’s back. Moments later, they launched into the sky. Wind rushed past her face. The kingdom stretched beneath them. Mountains. Forests. Rivers. Everything looked so small from above. Ahead, the Dark Dragon continued its rampage. Villages burned in the distance. The creature was heading directly toward Blackthorn Castle. Toward her home. Toward her people. “We have to stop it.” “Then we must reach the crown.” The golden dragon turned toward the highest mountain peak. A hidden cave rested near its summit. Ancient runes glowed around the entrance. As they landed, Aria felt the mark on her wrist burning hotter than ever. The cave recognized her. The stone doors slowly opened. Inside rested a single pedestal. And upon it sat the Crown of Flames. It was beautiful. Golden dragon scales formed its structure. Red gemstones glowed like fire. Ancient power flowed through it. The moment Aria touched the crown, a vision exploded through her mind. She saw the first kings. The first dragons. The ancient alliance. She saw her father standing inside this very cave years ago. He smiled. “If you’re seeing this, then I’ve failed.” Tears filled her eyes. “Father…” “But I know you’ll succeed where I could not.” His image looked proud. “The inheritance was never about power.” The vision brightened. “It’s about responsibility.” Then he disappeared. The crown settled upon her head. Power surged through her. Not dark power. Not destructive power. Balance. Strength. Wisdom. The inheritance had accepted her. Far below, the Dark Dragon roared again. The final battle awaited. ⸻ Blackthorn Castle burned. The Dark Dragon circled above it like a living nightmare. People ran through the streets. Soldiers desperately defended the city. None of it mattered. The creature was unstoppable. Until a second dragon appeared. Golden light burst through the clouds. Aria soared above the kingdom. The Crown of Flames glowed brilliantly. Every dragon symbol in the kingdom began shining. The Dark Dragon turned toward her. Its crimson eyes narrowed. For the first time, it had found an equal. The battle began. Fire filled the sky. Golden flames collided with black flames. The clouds exploded with light. The kingdom watched in awe. Aria held tightly to the dragon’s back. The crown guided her. Ancient knowledge flowed through her mind. She suddenly understood. The Dark Dragon could not be killed. Only purified. The corruption inside it had to be removed. The golden dragon seemed to understand her thoughts. “Together.” Aria nodded. Together. They charged. The Dark Dragon unleashed another wave of shadow-fire. Aria raised her hand. The Crown of Flames blazed. A beam of golden light struck the monster directly. The corruption began breaking apart. The Dark Dragon screamed. Not in anger. In pain. For centuries it had suffered beneath the darkness consuming it. Aria pushed harder. The golden dragon joined her. Light spread across the creature’s body. The crimson cracks disappeared. The shadows faded. Slowly. Painfully. Until at last— The darkness shattered. A brilliant explosion illuminated the sky. The Dark Dragon collapsed. Then rose again. Transformed. Its scales were now silver. Its eyes shone with peace. The corruption was gone. The kingdom erupted into cheers. The war was over. The Shadow Mage, watching from afar, realized he had lost. His armies had abandoned him. His plans had failed. And for the first time in years, he fled. Never to return. ⸻ Months later, peace had returned to the realm. The dragons no longer hid in the mountains. The ancient alliance was restored. Blackthorn Castle had been rebuilt. And Queen Aria sat upon the throne her father once occupied. Above the kingdom, dragons soared freely through the skies. Not as rulers. Not as weapons. As guardians. As friends. One evening, Aria stood on the castle balcony watching the sunset. The golden dragon landed nearby. “Your father would be proud.” Aria smiled. “I hope so.” The dragon looked toward the horizon. “You changed history.” She shook her head. “No.” Her gaze followed the dragons flying across the sky. “I simply accepted my inheritance.” And beneath the golden light of the setting sun, a new age began. An age of peace. An age of dragons. An age that would forever be remembered as… The Dragon’s Inheritance. The End.
