CHAPTER TWO

1186 Words
I was called to the office that evening. I looked up from the table I was cleaning and saw one of the staff members standing by the doorway. "Susan, Kelvin wants to see you in his office." I nodded, finished what I was doing, and headed towards the office. Kelvin was behind his desk, checking something on his laptop. He looked up when I walked in. "You want to see me?" "Yes. Come in." I stepped inside and closed the door behind me. "Is everything okay?" I asked. "Everything is fine. I just wanted to let you know that I'm leaving soon." I glanced at the clock on the wall. "Oh. Okay." "I have a meeting at my other office, and I need to get there on time." I nodded, wondering why he had called me in just to tell me that. Then he continued. "Since I'll be leaving, I won't be able to stay here with Amelia like I usually do." I looked at him. "Oh." "I know your shift ends in about an hour, so I think you should just pack up and head home with her." I frowned slightly. "But I still have one hour left she can stay alone for a while." "I'm aware." "Then I can just finish my shift. It's only an hour." Kelvin shook his head . "There's no need. The others can handle things here. I'll let them know you're leaving early." I hesitated. "Are you sure?" "Yes, Susan. It's fine." I looked towards the door, thinking about Amelia in his office. The truth was, bringing her to work wasn't always easy. I had to keep checking on her, making sure she was comfortable, and stopping whenever she needed to breastfeed. Kelvin had been helping me with her whenever he was around, which made things much easier. I hadn't expected him to help as much as he did when I first started bringing her along. "So, you're leaving now?" I asked. "In a few minutes. I just wanted to tell you first so you could get ready to leave too." "Okay. Thank you." He nodded and returned his attention to his laptop. I turned to leave, but paused at the door. "Kelvin?" He looked up. "Thank you for helping me with Amelia. I know you don't have to do that." He gave a small shrug. "It's fine, Susan, Don't worry about it." I smiled a little. "Okay. I'll go and get her things ready." "Alright. Have a safe journey home." Amelia was still there, lying in her stroller, looking as though she had absolutely no idea that her presence had just shortened my workday. I shook my head and smiled . "Come on, little miss. We're going home." I began gathering her things, checking that I had her feeding supplies and everything else she might need. I was grateful to be leaving early, even if it wasn't exactly part of my plan. Kelvin had already gone to speak with the other staff about my leaving, so I didn't need to worry about explaining myself to anyone. A few minutes later, I was ready. I took one last look around the restaurant, then pushed Amelia's stroller towards the exit. Another day at work was over. And honestly, I couldn't wait to get home. Pushing Amelia's stroller towards my door, I fished my keys out of my bag and searched for the right one. Honestly, I was too tired to deal with anything else today. After what felt like forever, I finally found it, unlocked the door, and pushed the stroller inside. The moment I stepped in, I let out a deep sigh of relief. "Wow. What a stressful day." I closed the door behind me and leaned against it for a few seconds. Thank God I was able to come home an hour earlier than usual. At least I could rest a little before the next round of motherhood began. I looked around my apartment and smiled faintly. It wasn't much, but it was mine. Well, mine and Amelia's. The apartment was a small, decent space with one main room, a little kitchen tucked into one corner, and a bathroom. I had arranged my things as neatly as I could, making sure every little space served a purpose. My bed stood against the wall, with a small bedside table beside it. A few of Amelia's things occupied one corner, including her diapers, clothes, and other baby essentials. There wasn't much room to move around, especially when her stroller was inside, but I had learned to manage. It wasn't the kind of apartment I dreamed of living in forever, but it was somewhere I could afford without stretching myself beyond what I earned. And for now, that was enough. I couldn't afford to be picky. As long as Amelia and I had a roof over our heads, a place to sleep, and somewhere safe to return to every day, I would make it work. Besides, Amelia was still only three months old. She didn't need a big house or an expensive nursery. She needed me. And right now, that was what I could give her. We still shared the same bed because she was too little to sleep separately in our tiny space. Most nights, I would lie beside her, listening to her soft breathing and occasionally waking up when she stirred. Sometimes, I watched her sleep and wondered what her life would look like as she grew older. Would she have a room of her own one day? Would I be able to give her all the things I never had? Would she look back on these days and understand how hard I had tried? I didn't have the answers. But I hoped that one day, things would be different. I glanced at the stroller and smiled at my little girl. "Welcome home, princess." Amelia looked up at me, blinking those innocent eyes of hers. I chuckled. "Yes, I know. You're home. You can stop looking at me like I'm the one who brought you here against your will." She made a tiny sound. I shook my head. "Honestly, you and your attitude." I carefully lifted her out of the stroller and carried her towards the bed, settling her down while I removed my shoes. For a moment, I simply sat there, looking around the small apartment. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't spacious. And it certainly wasn't the life I would have imagined for myself a few years ago. But it was our little home. And somehow, despite everything, I was grateful for it. Now, if only I could get Amelia to give me thirty minutes of peace, I might actually survive the evening. --------------A/N--------------------------------------------- 💗 LET'S TALK!
