The City never truly slept, Even at midnight lights still burned through the sky high glass building downtown while luxurious cars rolled through rain soaked street below, Somewhere between treasure and influence, People demolished each other silently every single day, And lately Evelyn Hart felt like she was overwhelmed in the middle of it all.
The pressure and burden inside vanguard company had become suffocating, Another investor withdrew support that morning, Three Senior Executive resigned before lunch, And by evening rumors spread that federal investigators were beginning to examine Vanguard financial activities.
Fear lived in every hallway now, Nobody smiled anymore, Nobody trusted anyone, Especially Damien Laurent, For the past week, Damien had become even colder than usual, More unpredictable, More dangerous, Every mistake triggered merciless consequences, Every meeting felt like psychological manipulation, And somehow, Regardless of everything Evelyn remained the person closet to him, The only assistant who survived, The only employee he trusted with confidential information, that trust terrifies her now because the more vanguard collapsed, The more Adrian Vale kept appearing beside her, Almost like fate or temptation.
"Miss Hart"
Evelyn looked up immediately from her desk outside Damien's office. One of the Executives approached hesitantly.
"Mr Laurent wants the acquisition reports updated before tomorrow morning".
Evelyn inhaled deeply before standing again.
"I'll finalize them" She said.
The Executive looked less anxious instantly and hastened away before she could change her mind.
Evelyn returned to her computer with tired eyes, Her head hurt, Her shoulders ached, And still hadn't visited her mother at the hospital today, Guilt pressed heavily against her chest.
The office doors opened suddenly, Damien stepped out adjusting the cufflinks of his black shirt, Even exhausted after sixteen hours of meetings, he still looked composed, powerful, dangerously elegant, his sharp grey eyes moved towards Evelyn immediately.
"You're still here"
"I'm revising the acquisition reports", Evelyn replied.
"You should've delegated them"
"There is no one available"
"Then leave them unfinished"
The response shocked her, Evelyn looked at him with a puzzled expression.
" You want unfinished reports?".
"No"
Damien grabbed his coat calmly.
"I want my assistant responsive and conscious tomorrow morning".
For a second, She simply stared at him because affection from Damien Laurent always felt unreal, like hearing kindness from a storm.
Damien glanced towards the reports on her screen again.
"Finish tomorrow"
"I can handle it"
"That's wasn't a request, That's was an order".
Without saying any other word, He moved towards the elevator, But just before the doors closed, He looked at her once more,
"You looked exhausted, Evelyn".
The softness in his voice lasted slightly a second, Then he walked away, leaving her strangely unsettled again.
Outside the building, Cold wind swept across the empty streets, Evelyn clutched her coat tighter while waiting for a taxi. A familiar classy and luxurious black car gently pulled beside the pedestrian walkway, Her heart reacted before her mind did. The passenger window lowered flawlessly, Adrian Vale flashed a lazy smile form the driver's seat.
"You really have to stop meeting me like this", Evelyn murmured.
"Why"
"Because it's beginning to look suspicious and intentional"
Adrian leaned back comfortably
"Maybe it is"
Heat immediately rushed to her cheeks, leaving her speechless and frozen in place. He opened the passenger door.
"Come have dinner with me" He said to her.
"It's already midnight"
"Exactly", Adrian interrupted her, "The best conversation happens after midnight"
"I have to go home"
"You say that always"
"And?"
"And after everything, you will still get into the car"
His smile made it hard for anyone to stay angry or resist him,
Evelyn tried not to smile failed completely.
Adrian noticed immediately
"There it is"
"What?"
"That's smile"
His eyes softened.
"You hide it too much".
Her chest tightened unexpectedly, No one has ever looked at her the way Adrian did, Like she mattered beyond usefulness.
After a brief hesitation, She entered the car again. The inside felt warm compared to the freezing night outside, Soft hip hop music played quietly through the speakers while the city lights blurred across the windows. For the first time all day, Evelyn felt herself breathe properly.
Adrian drove them toward the beachfront district where luxury restaurants overlooked the ocean.
"You know", Evelyn said quietly, "People already think we're suspicious"
"People always have something to say"
"I'm serious"
"So am I"
His calm voice made her glance toward him, Adrian hands rested loosely against the steering wheel while rain reflected across his sharp features.
"You invest your whole life worrying about consequences", He said softly, "Doesn't it het exhausting?"
Evelyn shifted her gaze
"You don't understand"
"Then make me understand"
The car fell silent for a moment, Then before she could stop herself, the honest truth slipped out.
"I'm scared all the time"
Adrian gaze shifted towards her instantly
"Scared of what ?"
"Scared of loosing my job, Loosing my mother, Loosing stability", She laughed bitterly, "My entire life depends on surviving in Vanguard Company"
Something dark crossed Adrian's expression
"You shouldn't have to live like that"
"But I have to"
The honesty between them felt deep now, dangerously deep.
By the time they arrived at the restaurant, the rain had faded into a light mist over the ocean. The place was quiet, Classy and Sophisticated, Glowing with a Golden candlelight reflecting against glass wall overlooking dark waves below.
Adrian pulled out her chair before sitting across from her.
"You come here often?", Evelyn asked.
"Only when I want peace"
"And does peace usually come with expensive wine?"
A faint smile touched his lips
"Sometimes"
For the first time in years, dinner felt easy, no pressure, no humiliation, no fear of saying the wrong thing, they talked for hours, about childhood memories, about books, about dreams neither of them admitted publicly.
Evelyn found herself laughing more than she had in months and Adrian watched her like the sound itself meant something to him, At one point she noticed him staring quietly.
"What?"
"You look different tonight"
"How?"
"Astonishing, Happily and Comfortable"
Her smile faded slightly.
"That feeling won't last once it's morning"
"Then maybe mornings are the problem"
The passion in his voice sent warmth through her chest again, dangerous warmth. Adrian reached across the table slowly, not enough to touch her, just enough for tension to spark quietly between them.
"Evelyn"........
The way he said her name felt romantic enough to lose control over completely.
She has to pulled back, she knows that, Adrian Vale is powerful, complicated and technically the enemy of the company destroying her life.
"You're staring again", She whispered nervously.
"I know"
"Why?"
"Because I can't stop"
The confession stole her breath instantly. Total silence settled heavily between them, not awkward, just positive and natural. Then Adrian stood slowly and offered his hand.
"Come with me"
Evelyn hesitated.
"Where?"
"You'll see"
Minutes later they stood near the empty beachfront promenade overlooking the dark ocean, wind tangled through Evelyn's hair while distant city lights sparkled across the water.
The world suddenly felt far away, quiet, private, Adrian stood beside her with his hands in his pockets.
"You know what I envy about normal people?", He said softly.
She glanced towards him.
"What?"
"They fall in love without calculating consequences"
Those words hit her harder than she can imagine, her heartbeat accelerated, Adrian looked down at her slowly. The air between them shifted instantly.
"You shouldn't say things like this", Evelyn whispered.
"Why not?"
"Because".......
She lost the rest of the sentence when he stepped closer, close enough that made her feel safe, comfortable, and drawn to him creating an intimate moment between them .
Adrian voice lowered softly,
"Tell me to stop"
Evelyn should have , instead she whispered,
"I can't"
That's was the permission he needed. Adrian touched her face gently before kissing her, slowly, carefully, like he was afraid she might disappear.
The world around Evelyn vanished instantly, no corporate wars, no fear, no loneliness, only him, only this. Her finger tightened against his coat as emotions overwhelmed her chest. Nobody had ever kissed her like she was precious before, like she mattered.
When Adrian finally pulled back slightly, their foreheads rested together while both struggled to breathe evenly, and for one dangerous moment, Evelyn Hart forgot that powerful men almost always come with devastating consequences.
Meanwhile, Several miles away, Inside his dark office, Damien Laurent stared silently at the security report lying open across his desk. A report detailing every location Adrian Vale visited tonight, including the beachfront restaurant, including Evelyn Hart.
Damien's expression slowly darkened, then without warning, the crystal glass in his hand shattered violently beneath his grip.
