I couldn't stop thinking about what they could possibly have me do in clothes like these. I shuttered at the thought, remembering Mr. Sullys words. "Sold you" on repeat in my head, thinking the worst, of course. Only natural.
"It's just around the corner" Dianna reassured me as we made our way through the hall and to the stairs. She didn't realize that made this all too worse, though. Maybe I could ask for a tour before this and put it off. I knew that wasn't an option but a girl could dream.
"What do they usually send us out for... looking like this?" I asked, motioning towards my body. She giggled a little before responding.
"You'll see soon enough. You're one of us now." Again, more questions than answers. Does everyone around here like to speak in riddles? Because I'm growing tired of it, personally.
"Yea yea, I guess I should be specific with my question. I'm not getting pimped out, right?" This time she laughed even louder at my concern. As if it's unreasonable to ask. No question is a stupid question. "I'm serious."
She straightened herself up and wiped a tear from her eye, "listen. This..." she waved her hands in the air at the house "..is a con-family. We are NOT prostitutes so get that out your mind. Us ladies are here to allure our target to a secluded area and get them vulnerable. We get what we came for and go. Sound easy enough?" I nod my head but don't respond. It's starting to make more sense but I can't believe my grandma was in on something like this. And who murdered her? What was to gain of killing her off? My gut churns at the thought. Or maybe it's the lack of food.
We make our way up the stairs and towards a large set of French doors. The second floor was more like a balcony looking over the first floor with one large room. When the doors opened I was greeted by the group of kidnappers all sitting at the table. The smell of the most heavenly breakfast dinner I've ever laid eyes on stole all my attention, though. I tuned out the rest of the world.
My face must have shown everything because Vince began laughing, "Don't you want to get acquainted with the rest of the crew before you dig in?" He was either crazy or stupid, either way I could care less. All I wanted was for everyone to shut up and let me eat.
I blurt out a quick "f**k no." Grabbing a plate and a pair of tongs to pick the best French toast from the stack. More laughter accompanied my response but I could care less as I filled my plate and sat down. It didn't seem like they planned to starve me but I didn't plan to stay either. I was going to stuff myself till it hurt, for safe measure.
"What a lady" one of the "copies" mocked, letting out a little whistle. I shoot him a glare. He grins real big for me, shooting me a wink in return.
"Why do you three look the same, are y'all brothers? Twins? Clones?" I asked after swallowing a mouthful of strawberries.
"What do you mean, we look completely different" one of them sitting beside me said in a huff. Is he offended? You'd think these guys would have tougher skin being in this profession and what not.
"I guess. You just look extremely similar is all. No twin is exact, especially with different hair styles. So it's a valid question." I try to sound as matter of fact-ly as I can before shoveling food in my mouth again. I've never had anything THIS good, I might be staying after all. Well, that is until I find out who the cook is and convince them to come with me. Again, a girl can dream.
"Well, I'm Carlos," he started "that's Sebastian and the short one over there? that's Jorg-"
"IM THE FUNNY ONE" Jorge interrupted, causing me to snicker a bit at his brothers frustration. Sebastian was definitely the quiet one. He must have more patients in his pinky than I have in my entire body. Intriguing.
Our banter is cut short when an older, petite woman opens the big doors. Revealing Mr. Sully behind her. I'm not one for grand entrances so I hardly pay him mind. I didn't even give it a second thought.
"Ms. Munoz, I suggest you look up and mind your manners before your manners mind you."
My breath hitched and I looked up from my plate. Everyone except me was standing now. Their respect for him was radiating, filling the room as they stood watching.
I slowly rise, feeling my knees pop as I scoot the chair back to have some room. "My apologies." I don't even bother with an excuse or explanation. He knows it's my first day here, he's probably like this all the time. I'll knock him off his pedestal by the end of this if it's the last thing I do.
He walked slowly to chair on the opposite side of the table and sat. "Good, less words the better. Now. Everyone take your seat. Gabrielle is going to pass out a nilla folder with a picture of your target. I need you to collect the money he owes- without blood shed. We may need him come our next confrontation with the De Luca's" I had no clue what he was talking about and he was being very vague but I had a feeling everyone else knew exactly what he meant. I hated being out of the loop, call it a pet peeve.
"Who are the De Luca's?" I asked blatantly. Surely he doesn't expect me to know everything immediately. Even the best evil villain can't resist laying out their plan bit by bit for their foe.
"Don't speak unless you're spoken to, Munoz." I hated the way he spoke to me. I hated the way he said my name. I was growing even more uncomfortable as the group had grown silent. They were all reading the paperwork before them. Gabrielle gathered the dirty plates that had formed a stack near the end of the table.
I didn't have anything in front of me, again out of the loop. But did they even expect me to do anything or just stand by and watch? The plan of stuffing myself went out the window when Mr. Sully ruined my appetite.
When everyone seemed to be done reading Mr. Sully cleared his throat. "Do any of you have any questions?" My hand went straight I to the air. He rolled his eyes, "Besides Ms. Munoz?"
Turning to me he continued when no one spoke up. "If you'd be a dear and get acquainted with the group maybe they'll be nice enough to let you in on the mission. If not, you'll find yourself going in blind. They do that sometimes, choose wisely." And with that he was off, not even caring if anyone else had something to say. But I'm certain no one else did, he seemed to have a tight hold on them. None of them would dare turn on him, that was clear.
