Chapter 14Stanten had known it would happen. She’d seen it happen to thousands of men and women. She’d made it happen. You put a person through this kind of training and this is what they became—if they made it. She had known Javi would make it. Had always suspected he had it in him. Even so, part of her felt a little sad about it. The Javi in front of her now, three months into the training that everyone had stopped pretending was to be police at least a month ago, was not the Javi who’d brought her coffee with a smile and some cheeky banter back on the Harriet. He had not washed out. Most dropouts had come in the first couple of weeks. After that only a few dropped away primarily due to injuries. Most of those asked if they could come back and complete the training after they healed. R
