The story begins with Bella, who is uprooted from her life as her strict mother, Sarah, relocates her to a different city. She gets quite angry because she has to leave everyone she knows, including her friends, family, and comfort zone, to start afresh. She is also feeling several emotions at this point: rage, loss, despair, and the uncertainty of what the future holds.
In the first part of this chapter, the reader is introduced to the main protagonist, Bella, and how her life has turned rough due to her relocation. It establishes a sad parting scene that provides a reasonable perspective for the reader.
The chapter also provides her considerations and views while she is on her way to her new location. There are also her thoughts where she expresses herself as being quite pessimistic and useless at that moment.
When she gets to the new town, however, her first words about the place do not pluck nicely at all: they sound pessimistic and detached. She perceived the people and the surroundings as not being polished to her taste, probably because she was feeling lost. Aside from that, she realizes that the first difficult huddle she'd try to overcome would be getting used to the new city and that she'd do with intense emotions.
So far in this chapter, Bella experiences a lot of downtimes and is trying her best to see how to connect and find herself, as well as deal with the unexpected circumstances and people she'd get entangled with.
