Chapter Ten: The Choice

1021 Words
For the first time since Luca Moretti entered her life, Elena had complete freedom. No debt. No contract. No obligation. The bakery belonged entirely to her family again. The engagement could be ended with a single sentence. She owed him nothing. Which should have made the decision easier. Instead, it made it harder. Because now she had to separate what she wanted from what had been forced upon her. And that truth terrified her. The next week passed quietly. Too quietly. The rival family had disappeared from the headlines. No new threats arrived. No suspicious cars lingered outside the bakery. Even Luca seemed calmer. Though Elena noticed he still checked on her from a distance. Never interfering. Never demanding. Just making sure she was safe. The old Luca would’ve called every hour. The new Luca respected boundaries. That difference mattered more than he realized. One rainy afternoon, Elena found herself standing outside the Moretti estate. Again. She stared at the gates. At the mansion beyond them. At the world she had once desperately wanted to escape. Part of her still did. But another part… Another part wanted the man inside. Not his power. Not his money. Not his name. Just him. The realization was terrifyingly simple. And terrifyingly honest. Before she could lose her nerve, she walked inside. Luca was in the library. Of course he was. Surrounded by paperwork. Ignoring lunch. Probably ignoring sleep too. Some habits never changed. He looked up when she entered. Surprise flashed across his face. Then caution. As though he was afraid to hope. “You came.” The words sounded almost disbelieving. Elena crossed her arms. “You look terrible.” A faint smile appeared. “Good afternoon to you too.” For several seconds, neither moved. Neither spoke. Then Elena took a deep breath. The kind that changes everything. “The debt is gone.” Luca nodded. “Yes.” “The contract is meaningless.” Another nod. “Yes.” “I can leave whenever I want.” Something flickered behind his eyes. Pain. Acceptance. “Yes.” The single word felt heavier than anything else he’d ever said. Because this time he meant it. Completely. No conditions. No chains. Nothing. The silence stretched. Then Elena walked closer. One step. Then another. Until she stood directly in front of him. “Luca.” His gaze met hers. And for the first time, she saw uncertainty there. The powerful heir who could negotiate with criminals and businessmen alike suddenly looked nervous. The sight almost made her smile. “What is it?” Elena’s heartbeat thundered. Then she answered honestly. “I’m still angry.” A shadow crossed his face. “Fair.” “I still think you’re stubborn.” His mouth twitched. “Also fair.” “And occasionally unbearable.” “I was under the impression it was more than occasionally.” Despite herself, Elena laughed. A genuine laugh. The first one in days. Luca stared at her as though he hadn’t heard that sound in years. Then her smile faded. And she told him the truth. “But none of that changes the fact that I care about you.” The room went completely still. Luca didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Didn’t seem capable of either. Elena’s heart nearly exploded from her chest. Yet she continued. Because some truths deserved courage. “I care about the man who protects people when nobody is looking.” She swallowed. “The man who donated to the shelter.” “The man who fixed the bakery.” “The man who kept returning to a tiny bakery because it reminded him there was still something good in the world.” Emotion flickered across Luca’s face. Raw. Unprotected. Real. And suddenly the feared heir looked nothing like a monster. Just a man. A man who had spent years believing he didn’t deserve happiness. A man who had finally found it. Then nearly lost it. “Lena…” The nickname sounded different now. Softer. Almost reverent. Before either could say anything else, An explosion shattered the windows. The blast rocked the entire estate. Glass rained onto the floor. Alarms screamed. Security rushed into action. For one disorienting second, chaos consumed everything. Then Luca moved. Instinctively. Immediately. His arm wrapped around Elena as he pulled her behind a stone wall. Protecting her. Shielding her. Just as he always had. The difference now was that she understood why. Voices echoed through the mansion. Gunfire erupted somewhere outside. Security teams responded. The rival family had chosen their moment. Their final attack. For the next hour, the estate became a battlefield. Not a war for power. A war for survival. And when it finally ended, the rivals were gone. Their leadership arrested. Their operations dismantled. Their influence shattered. Years of conflict concluded in a single night. The threat hanging over Luca’s world finally disappeared. Just before sunrise, Elena stood on the estate’s terrace. The city slowly awakened below. Golden light spread across the horizon. For the first time in months, everything felt quiet. Peaceful. Luca joined her moments later. A bruise darkened his jaw. His suit was ruined. His hair was a mess. And somehow he had never looked more human. Neither spoke immediately. The sunrise said enough. Finally, Luca broke the silence. “It’s over.” Elena looked at him. At the man who had entered her life as a nightmare. The man who had become her greatest challenge. And, somehow, her greatest love. “Good.” His eyes softened. Then he asked the question that mattered. The only one that mattered. “What happens now?” Elena smiled. A small smile. But real. “Now?” She stepped closer. Close enough to take his hand. Close enough to see hope in his eyes. “Now we start over.” No contracts. No debts. No obligations. Just choice. His fingers tightened around hers. And for the first time since the beginning of their story Neither of them were trapped. They were free. Free to walk away. Free to stay. Free to choose each other. And that made all the difference.
