Chapter Six: The Monster Behind the Name

1224 Words
The city knew when Luca Moretti was angry. Not because he shouted. Not because he made threats. But because everything went quiet. People stopped asking questions. Doors closed. Conversations ended the moment his name was mentioned. And tonight, the entire Moretti estate felt like it was holding its breath. Elena stood outside Luca’s office, staring at the closed door. For two hours, he hadn’t left. For two hours, his men had been coming and going with information. For two hours, she had wondered what kind of world she had stepped into. A world of secrets. A world of enemies. A world where a photograph could be a warning and a car could become a weapon. She hated it. She hated that her life had changed. But what she hated most was the thought of Luca facing it alone. The realization irritated her. She was supposed to hate him. Not worry about him. Not wait outside his office like she cared. Not feel a strange ache in her chest every time she saw exhaustion in his eyes. The door finally opened. Luca stepped out. His expression was unreadable. But Elena noticed the small things. The loosened tie. The tiredness around his eyes. The tension in his shoulders. “You should be asleep,” he said. She sighed. “There it is again.” A faint shadow of amusement crossed his face. “What?” “That sentence.” Despite everything, she almost smiled. Almost. Then she remembered why she was there. “Did you find them?” His expression changed. “They’re being handled.” Elena’s eyes narrowed. “That doesn’t answer my question.” “It answers enough.” “No, it doesn’t.” She stepped closer. “You don’t get to decide everything for me, Luca.” His jaw tightened. “I do when your safety is involved.” “There you go again.” “What?” “Acting like protecting me means controlling me.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Luca quietly said: “You think I enjoy this?” The question surprised her. His voice wasn’t angry. It was tired. “I think you enjoy being in control.” A bitter smile appeared. “Control is the only thing that keeps people alive in my world.” The honesty silenced her. Later that night, Elena found him in the training room. Not surrounded by his men. Not acting like the untouchable heir. Just Luca. Alone. He was staring at an old scar on his hand. She had never seen him look uncertain before. “What happened?” He looked up. “You’re becoming very curious.” “You make it difficult not to be.” A small smile appeared. Then disappeared. “My father taught me something.” Elena waited. “He said kindness was a weakness.” She frowned. “That’s horrible.” “That’s how he survived.” “And you?” Luca looked away. “I believed him for a long time.” Something about those words hurt more than she expected. Because she understood. Luca Moretti wasn’t born cold. He was made that way. “You don’t have to be like him.” His eyes returned to hers. The silence between them became heavier. “You don’t know what I’ve done.” “No.” She shook her head. “But I know what I’ve seen.” “And what have you seen?” Elena hesitated. Then answered honestly. “Someone who scares everyone else…” She stepped closer. “…but makes sure I’m safe.” Luca stared at her. As if her words had reached somewhere nobody else could. “Elena.” The way he said her name sounded like a warning. Or maybe a plea. She couldn’t tell. The next morning, Luca showed her something unexpected. The bakery. Her bakery. Except it had been repaired. The broken sign from years ago was replaced. The old equipment had been upgraded. The walls had been restored. She stared in disbelief. “What did you do?” Luca stood beside her. “I invested.” “You bought my bakery?” “No.” She looked at him. “Then what?” His gaze softened slightly. “I protected something important to you.” Her heart skipped. She hated that it did. “You can’t just fix everything with money.” “I know.” The answer surprised her. “I know money doesn’t fix everything.” For once, Luca Moretti admitted something without being forced. “I just don’t know how else to help.” The vulnerability in his voice caught her off guard. This man who could command an empire. This man who could make people fear him with a single look. Didn’t know how to express care. He only knew how to protect. Because protection was the language he had been taught. Elena looked around the bakery. Her bakery. The place where everything began. The place Luca had returned to for years. Slowly, she turned back to him. “Why me?” The question had been haunting her. Why a bakery owner’s daughter? Why this obsession? Why this marriage? Luca was quiet for a long time. Then he answered. “Because before I was Luca Moretti, before I was an heir, before I became someone everyone feared…” His eyes met hers. “You were the person who treated me like I was just a person.” Elena forgot how to breathe. For a moment, there was no mafia. No debt. No contract. Just two people standing in the place where their story started. Then Luca’s phone rang. The moment he answered, his expression changed. The peace disappeared. “What happened?” A pause. His eyes darkened. “Send everyone.” Elena immediately knew. Something was wrong. When he hung up, she searched his face. “Who was it?” Luca looked at her. And she saw the answer before he spoke. “The person behind the attack.” Her heartbeat quickened. “And?” His expression became cold again. Dangerous again. “They want a meeting.” Elena swallowed. “Are you going?” “Yes.” “I’m coming with you.” “No.” The answer was immediate. She stepped forward. “You don’t get to lock me away anymore.” “Elena” “No.” Her voice surprised even herself. “I spent my whole life being told what I could and couldn’t do.” She looked directly into his eyes. “I won’t become another person trapped by your world.” For several seconds, Luca said nothing. Then something unexpected happened. He smiled. Not the arrogant smile she knew. Not the dangerous one. A real one. Small. Proud. “You really are impossible.” She crossed her arms. “You’re only noticing now?” “No.” His gaze softened. “That’s what made me notice you in the first place.” And for the first time, Elena didn’t know if she wanted to argue with him. That terrified her more than any enemy ever could. Because the most dangerous thing in Luca Moretti’s world was not the violence. Not the enemies. Not the power. It was the possibility that the man she was supposed to fear… was becoming the one person she trusted most.
