Chapter One: The Debt

813 Words
The scent of fresh bread always lingered in the Rossi Bakery. Warm cinnamon rolls cooled on metal racks. Loaves of sourdough lined the shelves. Customers smiled as they left with paper bags tucked beneath their arms. To the outside world, the bakery was charming. To Elena Rossi, it was home. And apparently, it was also collateral. “Tell me you’re joking.” Her father sat across from her at the kitchen table, his hands trembling around a cup of coffee. He looked older than his fifty-two years. “I wish I was.” Elena stared at him. “How much?” Silence. “Dad.” His eyes lowered. “Two million.” The words hit her like a punch. Two million. No bakery in the city made enough money to cover that kind of debt. “Who did you borrow from?” Her father swallowed hard. “The Moretti family.” The room suddenly felt cold. Everyone knew the Morettis. Officially, they owned hotels, shipping companies, and luxury restaurants. Unofficially, they owned half the city through fear. And at the center of that empire stood Luca Moretti. The heir. The monster. The man whispered about in newspaper headlines and dark corners of expensive bars. Elena rose from her chair. “No.” Her father looked miserable. “He gave me a chance.” “What chance?” The knock on the bakery door answered the question. Three sharp knocks. The kind that wasn’t really a request. Elena walked toward the front shop. A tall man stood outside. Black suit. Dark hair. Cold eyes. Luca Moretti. He looked even more dangerous than the rumors suggested. The entire bakery seemed to shrink around him. His gaze swept over the room before settling on her. Slowly. Deliberately. As though he were assessing a purchase. “I assume you’re Elena.” His voice was smooth and calm. Which somehow made it worse. “What do you want?” One corner of his mouth lifted. “Straight to the point.” “I don’t like strangers showing up at my bakery.” His eyes darkened. “Good thing I won’t be a stranger for long.” A chill ran down her spine. Luca stepped inside. The scent of expensive cologne mixed with sugar and vanilla. Such a strange combination. Blood and sweetness. Power and comfort. “You owe me money,” he said. “My father owes you money.” “Same family.” Elena folded her arms. “We’ll pay.” “No.” The word landed like a hammer. “What?” Luca’s expression never changed. “The debt is too large.” “So what are you saying?” He stared at her. And for the first time, Elena felt genuinely nervous. “I’m offering an alternative.” Her stomach dropped. Behind her, her father looked away. As if he couldn’t bear to watch. “Luca…” her father began. The mafia heir lifted a hand. Instant silence. Then his eyes returned to Elena. “You marry me.” The bakery went completely still. Even the ticking wall clock seemed to stop. Elena laughed. A sharp, disbelieving laugh. “Absolutely not.” “Then your family loses everything.” Her smile vanished. “You can’t be serious.” “I never joke about business.” “You don’t even know me.” His gaze traveled over her face. Slow. Unsettling. “I know enough.” She hated the way her pulse reacted. Hated the confidence in his eyes. Hated that he stood there acting as though her life already belonged to him. “You can’t force me.” Luca stepped closer. Not enough to touch. Just enough to invade her space. “Try me.” Anger flashed through her. Before she could think better of it, she shoved him. Hard. The bakery staff gasped. Luca didn’t move an inch. His eyes narrowed. For one dangerous second, nobody breathed. Then He smiled. Not warmly. Not kindly. Like a predator discovering something interesting. “Good.” Elena blinked. “What?” “Most people are terrified of me.” “Maybe they have good reason.” His smile widened slightly. “Probably.” She wanted to slap him. Instead she glared. “I would rather die than marry you.” Something flickered in his eyes. Dark amusement. “We’ll see.” Then he turned and walked toward the door. Confident. Unhurried. As though the outcome was inevitable. Before leaving, he looked back. “Three days, Elena.” His gaze locked onto hers. “After that, I collect my debt one way or another.” The door closed behind him. The bakery finally exhaled. Elena stood frozen. Furious. Terrified. And unable to ignore one disturbing truth. For the briefest moment When Luca Moretti had looked at her It hadn’t felt like hatred. It had felt like a challenge.
