The ride out of the warehouse was silent, well...Silent for exactly twenty-three seconds.

Then Lin Yuexin exploded.

"You're a wolf."

Long Jianyu kept his eyes on the road.

"Obviously."

"A giant wolf."

"Very Obvious."

"A talking wolf."

"Yes of course."

"A billionaire CEO wolf!"

Jianyu finally glanced at her.

"Why does it look as if you are very focused on the wolf part and surprisingly calm about the billionaire part."

Yuexin pointed an accusing finger at him.

"Because billionaires don't usually grow fur and threaten to eat reporters for breakfast!"

A corner of Jianyu's mouth twitched.

"You were trespassing your boundaries ma'am."

"I was just investigating you."

"No, I guess you were just hiding behind boxes."

"Yeah, I did that professionally."

Jianyu laughed, the sound was deep and unexpectedly pleasant.

Yuexin stared.

"Wait......you can laugh?"

Jianyu raised an eyebrow.

"Should I be offended?"

"I don't know, but you're ruining my image of terrifying supernatural monsters."

"Good."

The car accelerated smoothly through the sleeping city. Outside, Huaxia's skyline glittered beneath the moonlight.

Inside, Yuexin kept sneaking glances at the man beside her. Hours ago, she had believed Long Jianyu was nothing more than an untouchable billionaire.

Now she knew he was apparently the king of giant talking wolves. Her life had become ridiculous.

"Where exactly are we going?" she asked.

"My home."

Yuexin nearly choked. "Your home?"

"Yes."

"You mean the wolf home?"

"Yes."

"The place with more wolves?"

"Many more big wolves."

"Wonderful, fantastic, excellent, I guess I'm thrilled."

"You don't sound thrilled at all."

"That's because I'm imagining becoming a midnight snack."

Jianyu's golden eyes gleamed. "If I wanted to eat you, little reporter, I would've done it already."

Heat rushed into her cheeks. "Stop saying things that sound weird."

"I wasn't aware honesty sounded weird."

Yuexin groaned. This man was impossible.

Twenty minutes later the city began thinning and the roads became quieter. Then she saw it, or rather...she saw the gates. Massive black iron gates rose from the darkness like the entrance to an ancient kingdom.

Silver wolves were carved into the metal, security towers stood on both sides and armed guards patrolled the walls, dozens of luxury vehicles moved through separate entrances.

A helicopter descended toward a distant landing pad.

Yuexin's mouth slowly fell open. "That's... your house?"

"No."

She sighed in relief. "Thank goodness."

"The estate starts after the gates."

Yuexin nearly swallowed her tongue.

The gates opened an the car rolled forward, and for a moment Yuexin forgot how to breathe.

The estate stretched endlessly beneath the moonlight, there were multiple mansions. Entire neighborhoods, training grounds, gardens, private roads, security checkpoints, elegant villas, Office buildings and even a lake.

She saw hundreds of people moving about, servants, guards, executives and wolf pack members.

Vehicles moved constantly and lights glowed from countless buildings.

"This can't just be an estate," she whispered.

"Then what is it???"

She pointed outside. "This should be a small country."

Jianyu looked amused. "That's a little dramatic."

"A LITTLE DRAMATIC?!"

He parked smoothly. The moment they stepped out, dozens of guards straightened, every person nearby lowered their head respectfully.

"Alpha."

"Alpha."

"Alpha."

The greetings came from every direction, Yuexin immediately hid behind Jianyu.

"I don't belong here."

"I guess you do now."

"What does that even mean?"

Jianyu looked at her and for a brief moment his teasing expression disappeared, his gaze became serious.

"Listen carefully, Lin Yuexin."

Something in his voice made her stop joking. "The moment you saw me transform, your life changed."

The words settled heavily between them.

Yuexin swallowed. "What do you mean?"

"There are dozens of wolf clans in Huaxia."

His expression darkened. "Some are allies."

"Some are enemies."

"And every single one would be interested in a human who discovered our existence."

Yuexin's heartbeat quickened. "So you're saying..."

"I'm saying if word spreads, you become a target."

The humor vanished, for the first time since the warehouse, genuine fear touched her chest.

"Target?"

"Kidnapped."

He held up one finger.

"Interrogated."

A second finger.

"Used as leverage."

A third finger.

"Possibly killed."

Yuexin squeaked. "That escalated quickly."

"It did."

"You're serious?"

"I rarely joke about murder."

"The safest place in Huaxia is this estate." He stepped closer, "And as long as you're under my protection, nobody will touch you."

For some reason, his words made her feel safer than they should have. Dangerously safe which was ridiculous and that's because he was literally the danger.

Before she could respond, an elderly man approached, his silver hair was perfectly combed.

His suit looked more expensive than her yearly salary and his posture was impeccable.

"Young Master."

Jianyu nodded. "Butler Wu."

The elderly man turned toward Yuexin, his sharp eyes examined her.

Yuexin immediately stood straighter.

The man sighed, then he looked at Jianyu. "You frightened another one."

Yuexin blinked. "What the f**k, another one!?"

Butler Wu nodded gravely. "The previous three lasted less than ten minutes."

"The previous three WHAT?" "Potential companions."

Yuexin nearly fainted and Jianyu pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Butler Wu."

"What?"

"Stop talking."

The old butler looked delighted, Yuexin suddenly realized that this old man was trouble.

Before she could recover, several figures approached.

A tall man with sharp features bowed slightly.

"Hao Chen. Beta of Heaven Wolf Clan." Beside him stood a beautiful woman wearing glasses.

"Mei Ling."

She offered Yuexin a small smile.

"Our strategist."

Yuexin blinked. "You people introduce yourselves like secret agents."

Hao Chen looked confused.

"We are secret agents."

"Oh."

"Mostly."

"Oh."

Mei Ling laughed softly.

The estate suddenly felt slightly less terrifying, then a voice cut through the courtyard.

"Is this the human?"

The temperature dropped instantly, a beautiful woman walked toward them.

Every servant nearby immediately became nervous.

Yuexin noticed something else. The woman wasn't looking at her, she was looking at Jianyu.

And only Jianyu.

Uh-oh.

Female intuition activated, maximum alert.

The woman stopped before them. "Long time no see, Jianyu."

Jianyu's expression remained neutral.

"Xiang Ru."

The woman smiled, then looked at Yuexin and suddenly the smile vanished.

"Oh."

Just one word, but somehow it carried enough hostility to start a small war.

Yuexin smiled nervously. "Hi."

Silence.

More silence.

Then Xiang Ru finally spoke.

"This is the girl?"

Yuexin looked around.

"Is there another one?"

Hao Chen immediately turned away to hide his laughter.

Mei Ling coughed suspiciously.

Xiang Ru's eye twitched.

Jianyu looked amused.

Yuexin was beginning to realize she had accidentally stepped into a battlefield. And she wasn't wearing armor.

She was wearing sneakers.

Then another voice echoed across the courtyard.

"Brother."

A young man approached.

Handsome, confident and smirking.

Long Jianfeng, the Alpha King's younger brother.

He looked Yuexin up and down.

"Interesting."

"I get that a lot today."

Jianfeng laughed, at least this one laughed.

Unfortunately, Yuexin quickly realized every member of this family was slightly insane.

Maybe that was genetic.

A servant suddenly rushed toward the group.

"Alpha!"

Everyone became serious, the servant bowed quickly.

One of the scouts stepped forward, his expression was grim.

"We found evidence near the warehouse."

Jianyu's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of evidence?"

The scout hesitated, then spoke.

"Tracks."

The courtyard fell silent.

"Not ours."

Hao Chen's smile disappeared.

Mei Ling's expression hardened.

Even Xiang Ru stopped glaring at Yuexin.

The scout swallowed.

"Our teams confirmed it."

He looked directly at Jianyu. "Unknown wolves were observing the warehouse."

Every muscle in Yuexin's body tensed.

The warehouse, last night someone had been watching.

Jianyu's golden eyes darkened and for the first time, Yuexin understood why people feared him.

The atmosphere around him shifted.

"Find out who they belong to."

His voice was ice. "Immediately."

The scout bowed.

"Yes, Alpha."

As the man rushed away, Yuexin felt a chill crawl down her spine,someone had been watching.

And judging by the dangerous look in Long Jianyu's eyes...

Whatever was coming next was going to change everything.
