Chapter 12: The Demon’s Blade

1156 Words
--- A storm rolled in over Blackthorn territory—lightning slicing across the sky like cracks in reality. The estate's lights flickered under the pressure, a signal that something dark was on the move. Kael stood at his office window, arms crossed, eyes scanning the heavens. The air was charged with magic—not his, not even Aria’s. Something older. Something corrupted. Behind him, the door creaked open, and Jax entered, his Beta aura tense. “We’ve confirmed it,” Jax said. “There’s movement from the northern ridge. The Hollow Pact has sent scouts through the wards.” Kael’s eyes narrowed. “They’re testing our defenses.” “They weren’t alone,” Jax added. “Selene Blackthorn was spotted near the ruins.” Kael turned slowly. “I told you to exile her.” “She didn’t cross the border—yet. But she was seen meeting with a cloaked figure. One of the dark priests.” A muscle in Kael’s jaw jumped. “She’s playing with fire.” Jax hesitated, then added, “Our Seer said she’s seeking a weapon... one that could sever a divine bond.” Kael’s gaze darkened like thunderclouds. “The Demon’s Blade.” --- Meanwhile – Aria’s Awakening Downstairs, Aria stood in the estate's inner garden. She hadn’t been able to sleep since the vision. The memory of that blade—black and burning—still haunted her. And though she hadn’t told Kael, the crescent mark on her collarbone had begun to pulse. Soft light drifted from her skin like a heartbeat. Not bright enough to see in daylight, but in the dark… it glowed like embers. The garden lights flickered. She pressed her palm against the stone table, willing herself calm—but her fingers sparked. A rush of silver light burst from her hands, carving symbols into the stone. Aria gasped, stumbling back. “Aria?” a voice called behind her. She turned—and Kael was already striding toward her, eyes glowing gold. “What happened?” he asked, kneeling beside the stone where the runes still glowed. “I… I don’t know,” she breathed. “It just happened.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “These are Moon Runes. Sacred symbols. Only high priestesses of Selene were ever able to channel them.” Aria looked down at her hands, shaking. “Then what does that make me?” Kael touched her cheek gently. “It makes you a miracle… and a threat to those who fear the light.” --- Elsewhere – The Ritual In the ruins of an ancient temple, Selene Blackthorn stood surrounded by burning torches. Her hair was loose, wild, lips stained with black ritual blood. Before her, the Demon’s Blade hovered—bound in chains, etched with runes from another world. “Do you accept the consequences of wielding this?” the priestess asked. “I accept them all,” Selene snarled. “You will lose your soul, Selene.” “Then I’ll forge a new one.” The blade hissed when her hands closed around it. A wave of power pulsed outward—cracking stone, igniting trees, making the very earth tremble. Selene’s eyes turned red. --- Back at the Estate Kael's phone buzzed. Jax’s voice came through, strained. “She has it.” “The blade?” Kael asked. “Yes. And she’s already used it. Two of our scouts are dead. Their bonds were severed before their hearts stopped.” Kael cursed. “We’re running out of time,” Jax continued. “You need to leave the estate. Take Aria somewhere the Hollow Pact can’t track.” “No,” Kael said. “If we run, they’ll follow. If we hide, they’ll hurt others. We fight.” “But she has the Blade—” “She won’t touch Aria,” Kael growled. “Not while I still draw breath.” --- Later That Night – The First Strike The estate was under lockdown. Warriors patrolled every hallway. But it wasn’t enough. At exactly midnight, the shadows in Aria’s room shifted. Something cold swept in—like a breath of the grave. Aria jolted awake, heart thundering. The crescent mark on her skin flared like fire. Before she could scream, the shadows coalesced—forming Selene, dressed in black, holding the Demon’s Blade. Kael burst in an instant later—fangs out, claws glowing with golden fury. “Step away from her,” he growled. Selene tilted her head, smiling darkly. “Hello, Alpha. I only came to take what’s mine.” “You were never mine,” Kael said. Selene’s smile cracked. “You chose her? A human?” She pointed the blade at Aria. “She doesn’t deserve you. She doesn’t even understand what it means to be Luna.” “She understands more than you ever did,” Kael said. “She has the Goddess’s favor. You sold your soul for a cursed toy.” Selene's eyes blazed red. “Then let me show you what this toy can do!” She slashed the air—and the blade sent a wave of black energy straight at Kael. Kael leapt forward, shielding Aria with his body. The wave hit him in the chest, forcing him to his knees. His bond to Aria flared—and then shivered. Not broke. But fractured. Aria screamed, diving to Kael’s side. “Kael!” His eyes flickered—struggling. The bond was under attack. Selene raised the blade again. Aria moved. Faster than she should have. Her hands glowed silver—and she caught the blade with her bare palms. The weapon screamed as if it had been burned. Selene reeled back. “What… what are you?!” “I’m chosen,” Aria said. “And you… are not.” Her hands flared brighter—and the blade cracked. A spiderweb of light shattered the obsidian edge until it exploded in her hands. Selene screamed, blasted back into the hallway where guards rushed in. Kael collapsed, gasping—but alive. Aria held him close, her body still glowing faintly. “I won’t let them take you from me,” she whispered. --- Aftermath Selene escaped. But the Demon’s Blade was gone. Kael lay in bed, recovering. The fracture in the bond had weakened him—but not broken him. Aria hadn’t left his side. “You saved me,” he whispered hoarsely. “No,” she said. “We saved each other.” Kael reached for her hand. “Next time… I won’t let her near you.” Aria smiled faintly. “You won’t have to. I’ll stop her myself.” His eyes searched hers. “You’re changing.” She nodded. “I think… the Moon is waking something in me. And I’m not afraid anymore.” Kael pulled her into his arms, his voice low. “Then let the world come. We’ll face it—together.” ---
