The sky was bruised with dawn.
Aria stood barefoot on the rooftop garden, the wind tugging at her nightgown as if trying to whisper secrets in her ear. Her crescent mark pulsed faintly, synchronized with the rhythm of her heart.
She hadn’t slept. The dream—the prophecy—still clung to her like a second skin.
You are the Balance. You are the Light born of Shadow.
But what did it mean?
Kael stepped onto the rooftop quietly, his eyes immediately finding her.
“You felt it too,” he said. It wasn’t a question.
Aria nodded. “The whisper. The warning. It wasn’t just a dream.”
“No.” Kael joined her side, gazing out over the estate. “It was a message from Selene. A test is coming.”
She turned toward him, worry creasing her brow. “What kind of test?”
Kael didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he took her hand and pressed it to his chest.
“This bond between us—it’s more than matehood now. You’re becoming something more, Aria. Something not seen in generations.”
She swallowed. “You mean the Moon-Touched?”
Kael nodded slowly. “Only one in every few centuries bears that power. And the last one… she changed the world.”
Aria looked down at her glowing mark. “Do you think I’m strong enough to handle it?”
Kael leaned in, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I know you are.”
But deep in his eyes… lingered a flicker of fear.

The Ancient Archives
Kael took Aria into the deepest chamber beneath the Blackthorn estate—The Hollow Archives—a library older than the pack itself, carved into the mountain’s bones.
It was filled with tomes bound in wolfskin, scrolls sealed in crystal, and relics humming with long-forgotten power.
An elder greeted them—Elder Marius, a gray-eyed wolf with ink-stained fingers and a scent of parchment clinging to his robes.
“I need you to show her the Bloodline Records,” Kael said.
Marius studied Aria carefully before nodding. “Follow me.”
They descended deeper, into a room illuminated only by bioluminescent moss and glowing runes.
Aria stared at the great Bloodline Wall—an obsidian slab etched with thousands of names in silver script.
“The Moon-Touched do not belong to any single pack,” Marius said. “They are chosen by the Moon herself. But every one of them is born… of mixed blood.”
“Mixed?” Aria asked.
Marius nodded. “Half-wolf, half-human. Or, in your case… something older.”
He touched a glowing name near the top of the wall.
Lunaria Elyse.
“She was the first. She ended the Blood War with a single command. Her blood burned like silver fire. The world bowed to her.”
Aria stared at the name, feeling a strange warmth in her veins.
“Lunaria was your ancestor,” Marius said gently. “And your blood carries the same fire.”
Aria backed away slowly, breath uneven. “I’m not her. I can’t be.”
Kael touched her shoulder. “Maybe not yet. But you could be more.”

Meanwhile – Betrayal Brews
In the eastern wing of the estate, Selene Blackthorn met secretly with Victor, one of Kael’s inner circle guards.
“You know your orders,” she whispered, handing him a small black vial. “Put this in her tea. Tonight.”
Victor frowned. “What will it do?”
“Nothing fatal,” Selene purred. “Just enough to weaken her… so the Hollow can collect her during the trial.”
Victor hesitated.
“You swore loyalty to the Blackthorns,” she added, eyes narrowing. “Don’t make me remind Kael what you did during the last rebellion.”
Victor’s jaw clenched. He took the vial.
“Good boy,” Selene said.

The Trial of Moonfire
That night, Aria stood in the center of the sacred grove—a hidden glade lit only by moonlight and fireflies.
A silver flame burned in the stone basin before her.
“This is the Trial of Moonfire,” Kael said, watching from the grove’s edge. “You’ll face an illusion forged from your greatest fear. If you survive, your powers will awaken fully.”
Aria took a deep breath.
She stepped toward the flame—
—and drank from the silver basin.
---
Within the Trial
Darkness swallowed her.
She stood on the battlefield from her visions. Blood soaked the ground. Bodies of wolves and humans alike lay broken.
Kael was on his knees—eyes lifeless, a dagger through his chest.
Selene stood over him, laughing.
“You failed him,” she sneered. “You brought war to his doorstep.”
“No…” Aria whispered. “This isn’t real.”
“You’re weak,” Selene taunted. “A human pretending to be Luna. You don’t belong in his world.”
Flames erupted around Aria. She screamed, falling to her knees.
But then—she heard it.
A voice. Her own.
> “You are the Light born of Shadow.”
She stood. The flames no longer burned her.
They danced along her skin—silver fire—responding to her will.
She raised her hand, and the illusion shattered.
---
Reality
The grove erupted in silver light as Aria burst out of the trial.
The mark on her collarbone had spread—now wrapping over her shoulder and down her arm, glowing with celestial runes.
Kael rushed forward, catching her as she stumbled.
Her eyes—no longer just brown—were flecked with glowing silver.
“You did it,” he said, voice thick with awe. “You passed.”
Aria looked at her hands. The fire still danced along her fingertips, gentle and warm.
“I feel… alive.”
And then she whispered, “I saw you die.”
Kael froze. “What?”
“In the vision… you were on the battlefield. Dead.”
Kael’s voice turned grim. “Then we need to make sure that future never comes to pass.”

The Poisoned Cup
Back in her chambers, Aria sat before her tea.
Victor had delivered it personally.
Her fingers hovered over the rim.
But something felt… wrong.
The fire within her mark pulsed faintly, and her nostrils flared—bitter herb. Wolfsbane?
She rose and sniffed the tea carefully.
Then knocked it over.
Kael entered moments later.
“Aria, what—?”
“Someone tried to poison me.”
Kael’s eyes glowed gold with rage.

Betrayal Uncovered
Victor was dragged before Kael an hour later, bloodied and trembling.
Kael didn’t need to speak. His aura alone made the traitor’s knees buckle.
“I didn’t mean to kill her,” Victor begged. “Selene made me. She threatened—”
Kael growled, voice like thunder. “You would betray your Alpha… your Luna… because of a threat?”
Victor cried out, “Please—”
Kael raised his hand to strike.
But Aria stepped forward.
“Wait.”
Kael turned, fangs bared. “He tried to kill you.”
“I know.” Aria’s eyes glowed silver. “But if we kill him now… we lose the chance to learn what Selene is planning next.”
She knelt before Victor.
“You want redemption?” she asked. “Then help us stop her.”
Victor hesitated… then nodded.
