The black SUV pulled through the iron gates of the Blackthorn Pack estate, tires crunching along the gravel path beneath ancient trees that loomed like guardians of a forgotten world.
Aria sat beside Kael in the passenger seat, silent, tense. The world outside her window no longer looked like the city she knew. It was wilder, older—like it belonged to something more primal.
And it did.
This was the heart of the pack.
The forest gave way to an estate that looked plucked from a gothic novel—stone and wood and stained glass towering in elegant defiance of modern design. Soldiers—no, wolves in human skin—stood guard at every corner.
“This is your home?” Aria asked, her voice barely audible.
Kael didn’t look at her as he answered. “It’s the pack’s home. It hasn't felt like mine in a long time.”
Aria didn’t press.
When the car came to a stop, Kael turned to face her, expression unreadable.
“Everything changes from this point on.”
She nodded, though she wasn’t sure she understood. But the moment she stepped out of the vehicle, she felt it—eyes. Dozens of them. Watching. Judging.
Wolves disguised in Armani suits and leather jackets. Women with sleek gazes and graceful poise. Warriors. Elders. Heirs.
All looking at her.
The human.
The outsider.
The one their Alpha had brought home.

Inside the Great Hall
The grand double doors swung open into a space that smelled of old pine and power. Aria followed Kael closely, her heart racing as murmurs echoed off the high ceilings.
“She’s human…”
“Is he insane?”
“After what happened with Lyra…”
Kael’s jaw clenched. “Ignore them.”
“I’m trying,” Aria whispered.
The hall parted like the Red Sea as the Alpha walked through with his guest. Aria tried not to flinch under the weight of a hundred stares.
Then, a voice rang out—clear, sharp, feminine.
“Well, well. This must be the new Luna.”
A tall woman stepped forward, blonde and lethal in a blood-red dress. Her smile was all teeth.
“Selene,” Kael greeted tightly. “Still sharpening your claws on the wounded, I see.”
Selene laughed. “Always. And she’s not wounded yet. But if you’re serious about her…” She turned to Aria. “She’ll have to pass the Luna Trials.”
Aria’s blood froze.
Kael turned fully. “She’s not ready. She hasn’t even—”
“You brought her here, Alpha,” Selene said smoothly. “She bears your scent. She’s been touched by the bond. The pack has the right to test her.”
“What kind of test?” Aria asked quietly.
Selene smiled at her like a cat eyeing a mouse. “Nothing fatal. Usually.”

Later – The Courtyard
Kael paced like a caged beast, fury radiating from him.
“I should never have brought you here.”
“You didn’t force me,” Aria said.
He stopped and turned to her, expression wild. “They’re going to tear you apart, Aria. Verbally, emotionally. Maybe even physically. You’re not one of them. They’ll make you bleed for that.”
“Then I’ll bleed,” she said. “But I won’t run.”
Kael froze.
And then something in his face shifted—something soft and proud and deeply pained.
“You don’t know how strong you are,” he murmured.
Aria swallowed hard. “I’m scared. But… I want to understand. I want to see your world. Even if it hates me.”
He stepped close, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “No matter what happens in that trial, you walk out of it alive. If anyone lays a hand on you—”
“I don’t want you to fight for me,” she whispered. “I want to stand on my own.”
His eyes darkened with something deep and ancient. He nodded.
“Then let the Moon decide.”

That Night – The Luna Trial
The moon rose high above the clearing behind the estate, casting silver light across the circle of elders and wolves seated around a ceremonial stone platform. Torches burned low. The air was heavy with incense and tradition.
Aria stood alone in the center, dressed in white linen, her feet bare, her heart pounding like war drums.
Selene stepped forward, now clad in a ceremonial robe.
“Aria Lane,” she began. “You stand before the sacred circle not as a wolf, but as the chosen mate of our Alpha. The Moon has marked you, and so the pack must judge you.”
Aria raised her chin. “I’m ready.”
Selene smirked. “Let the trial begin.”
---
Trial 1: The Circle of Truth
The first test was simple—at least in theory.
Elders surrounded Aria, each one asking a question meant to test her honor, loyalty, and intention.
“Why do you want to be Luna?”
“I don’t. I want to understand why I’m his mate.”
“What would you do if the Alpha’s life was in danger?”
“Protect him. Even if I’m afraid.”
“What if the pack rejects you?”
“I’ll still stand beside him.”
More questions followed. She answered them honestly, even when her voice shook. The murmurs around the circle grew quiet.
For the first time, a few heads nodded.
---
Trial 2: The Gauntlet of Memory
Selene guided Aria into a smaller chamber, lit with flickering blue flame.
“Drink,” she said, handing Aria a goblet of moonwater.
“What is it?”
“A vision. A confrontation. The Moon Goddess will show you your greatest fear.”
Aria drank.
Instantly, the world spun.
She was back in her childhood bedroom. Her father was yelling. Her mother crying. Her little brother hiding behind the couch. The memory washed over her like acid—raw and sharp.
“You’re worthless,” her father spat. “Always were.”
Tears stung her eyes.
Then Kael appeared—tall, protective.
But in the vision, he turned away.
“You’re weak,” he said coldly. “You don’t belong in my world.”
She fell to her knees.
But then, a voice echoed—not his, not her father’s.
Her own.
“I do belong,” Aria whispered.
The vision broke like shattered glass.
When she awoke, Selene was watching her closely.
“You passed.”

Trial 3: The Blood Mark
“This is the last test,” Selene said. “You’ll offer a drop of blood to the pack stone. If the Moon accepts you, it will glow. If it rejects you… it will remain dark.”
Kael appeared in the crowd, tense and furious, but silent.
Aria stepped forward.
Her hand trembled as she lifted the ceremonial dagger.
“Let me,” Kael said suddenly, stepping forward.
She looked at him—and nodded.
He took her hand gently, pricked her finger, and guided it to the stone.
One.
Two.
Three drops of blood.
For a long, horrible moment, nothing happened.
Then—
The stone glowed.
Brilliant silver light poured from it, illuminating the entire clearing.
Gasps echoed around the circle.
Selene looked stunned.
Kael stepped beside Aria, eyes locked on hers.
“You’re accepted,” he whispered. “The Moon chose you.”
Aria swayed on her feet, dizzy, overwhelmed.
Kael caught her in his arms.
And this time, he did kiss her.
It wasn’t gentle.
It wasn’t shy.
It was the kiss of a man who had been waiting lifetimes.
And for the first time, Aria kissed him back like she believed it was real.
Because it was.
