Chapter 8: Marked by the Moon

1235 Words
--- Aria hadn’t slept all night. She sat on the edge of her bed, knees drawn to her chest, staring blankly out the window. The city lights had long since faded beneath the morning haze, but her mind was still spinning from the night before. Kael. Werewolf. Mate. The words circled in her head like vultures, picking apart her every belief, every rule she'd lived by. How was she supposed to just go back to work like nothing happened? How did one file papers for a man who turned into a wolf beneath moonlight? She pressed her fingers to her temple, trying to calm the storm building behind her eyes. Then it hit her. She could feel him. Even now, though miles apart, his presence was like a subtle hum in her chest—warm, steady, magnetic. It should’ve terrified her. But it didn’t. What scared her more was how comforting it was. --- Later That Morning – Blackthorn Enterprises Kael sat behind his desk, jaw clenched, eyes locked on the elevator doors across the office. She was late. He’d promised her time. He’d promised not to pressure her. But that didn’t stop the worry from growing like a weed in his chest. What if she ran? What if she never came back? His wolf paced inside him, anxious and restless. Then, as if the Moon Goddess herself answered his silent plea, the elevator dinged. Aria stepped out. She looked tired, pale—but she was here. And she was… radiant. Kael stood immediately. His heart thudded. Her eyes met his briefly, then darted away. “Good morning,” she said, barely above a whisper as she passed his door. Kael followed her without a word. --- In the Office Kitchen Aria poured herself a cup of coffee with shaking hands. She knew he was behind her before he spoke. His energy rolled off him like a thundercloud. “You came,” he said. “I said I would.” He moved slowly, cautiously, stopping just behind her. “I meant what I said last night, Aria. I won’t push you. But I can’t pretend this doesn’t exist.” She turned to face him. “I don’t know what this is. I don’t know what I’m feeling. One minute I’m terrified, and the next I… I feel safe around you. And I hate it.” Kael’s eyes darkened. “Why?” “Because it’s not logical. Because you’re not just my boss. You’re something else—something that doesn’t even make sense in the world I grew up in.” “It doesn’t have to make sense,” he said gently. “The bond just is.” Aria stared at him, voice trembling. “And if I reject it?” Kael flinched like she’d struck him. “You have that right,” he said slowly. “But it will hurt. Both of us.” Silence stretched between them. Finally, Aria looked away. “I need to work.” He nodded. But as she turned, Kael’s eyes narrowed. Something was wrong. A faint, almost imperceptible scent clung to her clothes—not hers. Not his. Another wolf. --- Hours Later The day dragged on. Aria struggled to focus, her mind a fog of questions and instincts she didn’t understand. And then, as she was organizing files in the executive lounge, it happened. A cold chill swept over her. The lights flickered. She turned slowly—just in time to see the shadows move. A tall figure stepped forward, dressed like a janitor, but his eyes gleamed with crimson light. “Hello, mate,” he hissed. Aria stumbled back. “Who—what are you?” “Poor Kael. He always did love broken things,” the man sneered. “But a human? That’s a new low.” She ran, heart thundering, but he was faster. He grabbed her wrist with supernatural speed, yanking her close. Then—a growl ripped through the air. Kael. The doors flew open and he was there in an instant—his eyes golden, his teeth bared. The attacker dropped Aria and lunged, but Kael was faster. They collided in a flurry of snarls and claws. Kael’s fist slammed into the rogue’s jaw, sending him flying into the wall. “You dare touch what’s mine?” Kael roared. The rogue smirked, blood dripping from his lip. “She’s no Luna. She’s a weakness.” Kael’s voice dropped to a dangerous growl. “Then I’ll show you what weakness can do.” He shifted—partially. Just enough for claws to tear through his skin. Then he attacked. It was over in seconds. The rogue lay unconscious, groaning. Kael stood over him, panting, chest heaving. His hands trembled with rage. Aria, wide-eyed and shaken, slumped against the wall. He rushed to her side. “Are you hurt?” he asked, cupping her face. She shook her head, but tears welled in her eyes. “I didn’t… I didn’t know they were real. Other wolves. I thought… it was just you.” Kael cursed under his breath. “You’re marked now,” he said darkly. “They’ll come for you.” “Why?” “Because you’re mine,” he said. “And that makes you powerful. Dangerous. A target.” She paled. “I didn’t ask for this.” “I know,” he said, softer. “But I won’t let anyone touch you.” --- Later That Night – Aria’s Apartment Kael insisted on staying nearby—outside, in his car, refusing to leave her unguarded. Inside, Aria sat on the edge of her bed, clutching the strange ache growing in her chest. It wasn’t pain. It was heat. Something was happening to her. Her skin burned, but not in fever. Her heartbeat pulsed like a drum in her ears. Her senses were sharper—she could hear Kael’s heartbeat even from the street below. She stood and stumbled to the mirror. Her eyes flashed silver for a split second. She gasped. Then her phone buzzed. Kael: “It’s starting. The bond is awakening in you.” Aria: “What’s happening to me?” Kael: “Come outside.” She slipped on a hoodie and descended the steps to find him leaning against his black car, arms folded, eyes locked on hers. “You’re changing,” he said softly. “You won’t shift. You’re human. But the bond is awakening dormant power in you.” “What kind of power?” “Only the Moon Goddess knows. But it’s rare. Sacred. And you need to be protected.” “Is this going to kill me?” she asked. His face twisted in anguish. “No. But it will change you.” She shivered. Kael stepped closer, slowly lifting her hand to his chest. “You feel it, don’t you? The rhythm. The bond. You’re becoming more than human.” She looked up at him, heart in her throat. “I’m scared.” “So am I,” he whispered. Then he leaned down, so close their lips almost touched. But he didn’t kiss her. Not yet. “I’ll never hurt you,” he said. “And I won’t let anyone else try.” Aria stood frozen in the moonlight, her heart betraying her fears, her soul whispering something she didn’t dare admit out loud. She didn’t want to run anymore. ---
