Unexpected Danger

1066 Words
Norrie stared in horror at the direction where her eyes caught the sparkling light. She blinked twice to make sure of the sight she is seeing. Squinting her eyes, she is indeed certain that a gun barrel is pointed at her right from the grassy part a few meters away from where she is standing. She can see it clearly from where she is standing. Fear and panic rushed to her mind as she thought of a way to escape.  She thought that  this scene only appears in movies but she never realized that it could happen to her right when she never expected it. With eyes bulging as they enlarge, she wanted to shout for help but her voice seems to be caught in between her throat.  "H-help... H-help..." she could only yelp like a helpless dog. Her mind panicked and her feet are glued to where she is standing. She wants to run but her feet are rendered useless because of numbness. This seems to be her end. But why? Why is somebody pointing a gun at her? What has she ever done?  Tears raced through her cheeks as she stayed glued on the spot, her eyes staring at the gun barrel that is obviously appearing from the grassy part of the forest.  I am still too young to die. Her mind wants to fight with the circumstance but her body is useless, unable to fight or even flight. Her fear has crippled her body from moving away from this dangerous spot.  I wish I followed my group mates in the route assigned to us. How I wish I never insisted on this route just to see the river. She has a thing for rivers that she cannot explain. That's why upon hearing the sound of rushing waters, her feet immediately walked towards the source of the sound even without her thinking about it. Now, she regrets that she did that. She should have stuck with the group and never followed her desire to see the river.  Too late. It's too late. However, she has to at least make a way. She cannot give up without a fight. She has to at least run and hide for her life since it is the most sane thing to do at this point. There's no other way. Gripped by fear and confusion, she took one forceful step backward but did not notice the big rock at the back of her right foot causing her to stumble. Blag! Her butt fell on the rocky part of the riverside. "Ahhhh!" she shouted in pain. Suddenly, she felt something gushing on her feet. Her eyes widened as she realized that blood is oozing from her foot. The rock that her right foot hit is sharp enough to cut a wound at the back of her foot. Too bad she wore sneakers with open heels.  Blood! Her mind panicked. This is the thing she feared most in life. At the sight of blood gushing from her foot, her lips quivered and she slowly felt her world turning upside down until everything turned black.  Zing! Zing! Carl squinted his eyes and saw that the gun barrel aimed at the young miss fell. However, he cannot relax just yet. He has to make sure that this assassin is dead; otherwise, Norrie's life would be in danger. He had spotted the sniper earlier than her a while back. From his position, he has seen the shining light of the gun pointed at the young miss and he has already pulled the trigger twice.  "Wendel, 45 degrees east," he whispered on the radio and ordered Wendell to check the location of the enemy.  "Copy, boss. Over," Wendell answered.  Carl did not remove his eyes on the site of the snipper hiding on the grassy part of the river. He has to make sure that he is dead first. But wait, how about the young miss? Where is she? Scanning the riverside as fast as he can, he spotted her lying on the rocks. His heart sank, not even daring to think of what happened to her.  "Boss, boss..." Wendell said on the radio. That sound brought him back to his senses. "The man's dead. As usual, he is wearing 'the sign'". His lips quivered. What has he done! Why did he allow the man to shot the young miss first before he did? Tears started falling from his eyes. He cannot forgive himself for this single mistake he did in life.  "Boss, boss, the young miss.." Wendell said again on the other line.  He panicked but was able to pull himself together. He has to save her regardless of what happened. He was supposed to jump from where he is hiding when he saw that men in police uniforms are already carrying Norrie to a place of safety.  He stopped on his tracks. He has to follow and see what happened without revealing his presence. As a secret guard, he has to make himself invisible no matter what. That was a part of the promise he gave before his Aunt Mandy and Uncle Bill when he took this job to protect Norrie at all costs. Yes, this was the reason of his existence in her life.  Following closely while hiding on the tall trees and grass, he can see from afar that the policemen carrying her on a stretcher are not rushing at all. In fact, their strides are a little fast but not that fast as if rescuing someone in danger. That fact put his heart at ease. Maybe the young miss has not sustained any gunshot wounds after all. Then he saw the policemen transferring her to a stretcher with wheels when they reached the ambulance where their companions are waiting.  "Fainting!"  He can hear a policeman shout. That word made her heart breathe. So she just fainted. He thought that she was shot by the sniper even before he was able to shot him. It turns out that she fainted. Releasing a deep breath, he took out his cellphone and dialed his Uncle Bill's number.  "Hello?" Bill answered on the other line.  "Uncle, it's Norrie..." "Where is she?" Bill answered even without waiting for him to say more.  He sighed. This is not the first time that this happened. His Uncle Bill already knows what's going on the moment he calls.
