Nina’s POV:
“I’m Nina, and thank you very much for the compliment, handsome.” Don’t judge me. I don’t want to be rude to this terrific-looking guy in front of me. Social laws, once someone compliments you, you return it.
“Oh, Matt. I like her! Can I have her?”
I smack his finger away as my lips tighten. “I’m not a pet. I’m a breathing human being.”
“Oh, feisty. Me likey. How about you ditch mister grumpy over there and hang out with me?” He held my hand, and I could hear Matt scowl. Matt walked behind me, pulled me into his arms possessively, and glared at Jack.
He smiles, “Come on, man. Sharing is caring! Don’t you watch carebear?” I raised a brow as his smile faded. “Wait! I don’t watch it; my younger sister does! I happen to be in the same room!” He scratches the back of his neck.
My brows furrow, and I look at Matt. “Matt is he-” I point a finger towards my head and twist it. He broke into loud laughter along with me.
“Holy f**k! Am I dreaming?” He yelled as our laughter died. Jack took a step back, covering his chest and released an exaggerated gasp. “Matt! Did you seriously laugh? Did I take something before I came here? Am I drunk? Alternatively, perhaps, in a parallel world?”
“Oh golly, he is crazy,” I mumble.
Matt chuckled, “Go home, Jack.” Matt suddenly changes his tone. I’m quite surprised to hear Matt’s voice in such a cold and distant manner. I only heard it once before when his grandma passed away.
“No! There is a cutie here!” He winks at me.
“Leave, or I’ll have security escort you out,” Matt scowl.
Jack rolled his eyes. “I can see I’m not wanted here. When you’re bored with her, send her my way.”
My head snapped towards Matt, who stood there frozen as his arms tighten around me. “What does he mean by that?”
“Leave Jack,” he commanded.
Jack places both hands up, pacing towards the door. Standing in front of the door, he turns back. “I’m surprised your taste changes this drastically. Quite the step down, don’t you think?” He glanced at me before walking out.
My eyes widen as I place a hand on my chest. What the f*****g shithole does he mean by step down? I know I’m not the most attractive female in the world, but I’m not that bad looking! I had never felt so much dislike, no hatred, for someone before in my life. At least have some decency to say it when my back is turned. “Your friend is a dill hole,” I said, crossing my arms.
Matt clenches his molars, “I agree.”
I got out of his arms, turning towards him. “Matt, what does he mean by sharing earlier?”
He bit his lips and looked everywhere else except me. After several moments, he releases a breath and grabs my wrist, which I retract right away. I crossed my arms, narrowing my eyes. He started scratching his head as his eyes cautiously trail towards mine. “I used to play around with girls, quite often. We use to sha-”
“Woah-” I placed two hands in front of me and took a step back. “too much information already.”
Oh wow, I can’t believe Matt is that type of guy. It’s cool wanting to be close to your friends or bros but sharing girls? Isn’t that a bit too close?
I don’t even share underwear with Alice. Not the most sanitary thing to do, and she definitely agrees. Some bacteria are very resistant and can survive in underwear, even if it’s washed.
“Nina lis-”
“No, Matt. Whatever you and Jack do is none of my business.”
“Nina liste-”
“I know what you’re saying. You play around with girls, and it’s okay. It is your life; you live it your way. If you and Jack have a common interest in specific females and you two happen to want her simultaneously. I’m cool with it; I don’t judge.” I gave him a tight smile and patted his shoulder.
Turning, I went back to my room. As I walked back, I could hear footsteps behind and along with some name-calling. I don’t understand why, but I quicken my pace. Next thing I know, I was running towards my room. Geez had this hallway always been this long. Reaching my room, I closed the door only to stop by half of Matt’s body.
“Matt, go away! I need me time!” I screamed, pushing my body against the door.
“Nina! You heard me calling you! Why did you start running?” He pushed the door once, and my bottom made contact with the carpet. I mentally cursed his nice strong arms.
“I wouldn’t be running if you didn’t start chasing me!” I shouted.
“You’re the one who started running first, not me.” He bent down and threw me over his shoulder. I hate it when he does this to me. It reminds me of how I lack upper body muscles.
“What are you doing?” I shriek while hitting his back. He threw me onto the bed and hovered over me. I rolled over to get off the bed to pull me back and pin my wrist to the side. “Nina, stop struggling and listen to me!”
“I thought we were done with this conversation! I don’t want to hear about my friend’s s*x life!” I screamed while fighting to get to anywhere but here.
“Nina!”
“I don’t want to talk!”
“Liar! You love talking! It’s in your nature to never shut up!”
“Maybe I want to try something new once in a while! Have you ever thought of that?”
“Nina liste-” I opened my mouth, but he stopped me by placing a hand over my mouth, pinning both my wrists with one hand over my head. “I used to be a player. That was the past. I don’t do that anymore,” he said quickly.
I stopped squirming and stared at him.
“I stop doing it because of you. You show me how wrong it is to do such a thing. I shouldn’t have played around with girl’s hearts as if it was a game, so please stop looking at me that way.”
“What look?”
He places his forehead on my shoulder. “That disgusted look. I don’t like it,” he whispers.
“I’m not-”
“Nina, I know how you feel towards players, that’s why I never mention it.” He releases my wrist and grabs my hips pulling me closer to him as he wraps his arms around me.
I don’t exactly dislike playboys, but I don’t like them either. Many of them, not all, enjoy breaking girls’ hearts. My non-preference of them intensified when my younger sister’s heart was broken by one. He told her he only wanted her to open her legs and nothing more. I wasn’t in the right of mind when I took a baseball bat and smashed his car window.
I wrap my arms around him. “I’m not going to leave you or anything. Geez, calm down.”
His arms tighten, “I’m not proud of my past, and I didn’t want to disappoint you.”
“Aww, sweet pea. I won’t ever be disappointed in you,” I coo him while attempting to breathe. I played with his soft hair. “Matt, it’s okay, I don’t mind if you were a player. I’m happy you stop, though. It would be so uncomfortable hearing noises coming from your room.”
“That won’t happen. You’re the only woman I had ever brought into my room. The only woman who ever laid in my bed.” I can feel his lips moving on my neck as he said those words. He positions his face towards mine. “Do you want to tour New York today?”
I smile and nod.
He kissed me on the cheek and got off. “Wear something warm okay?”
“Don’t you mean, wear something pretty?”
He pinches my cheeks. “Forget looking pretty. It’s f*****g cold outside. Layers short stack. Go for ugly layers too. Ugly clothes will distract guys from all your cuteness.”
When he walked out, I went towards my luggage. I haven’t unpacked my clothes yet; I’m not very good at prioritizing things. Those clothes will probably lay there for another good week or more.
“Remember the uglier, the better!” he screams from his room.
I grab a pair of black jeans and a striped shirt along with a large coat. I decided to wear some boots; New York is freezing. I’ve been so accustomed to California’s warm or moderately cool temperature. Being in New York during April is quite a difficult transition. Matt promised me that it would get warmer, but so far, New York is quite atrocious.
I skipped out to see Matt messaging on his phone. He is always on his phone or laptop doing something. I peek at his computer once, and a migraine made its appearance. I shudder, remembering how there were so many unfamiliar words.
Leaning against the hallway hall, I waited for him to finish. A smile reveals itself as I watch him, he is very appealing when he is in, what I call, work mood. Matt is one of the hardest workers I have ever met. I remember sleeping over at his place during late-night college cramming. He would sit by my side, helping me study while working.
He nods to himself, indicating he is done with whatever he is doing. Looking up, he gave me a smile, which quickly turned into a flat line. He grabs the coat beside the front door. “I thought I told you to wear ugly clothes.”
I headed towards him. “This is my ugly clothes.”
“Not ugly enough,” he mumbles to himself. He grabs a gray scarf from the small closet and wraps it around my neck, covering half of my face. “There now that’s better.” He grabs my hand, and we head out. As the elevator ding, we got inside, and I saw the same guy from yesterday.
“Good morning, Mr. Greyson and Miss-” he trails off.
“Nina. Nice to meet you,” I extend my hand, but Matt held it back
The guy nodded, “Pleasure Miss Nina, George.”
“George, you can call me Nina, no need to add Miss.” I had always disliked formalities. It is like putting a wall between yourself and another person.
His eyes trail towards Matt, almost as if asking permission. Matt gave him a small nod and a smile plastered on his face. “Yes, Nina.” I don’t understand why, but whenever people interact with Matt. They seem intimidated by him, which is something I can’t quite comprehend. Matt is the sweetest guy I’ve ever met.
“Do you have a place you want to visit?” Matt asked.
I shrug, “Not really. Anywhere is fine. Got anything in mind?”
His lips tighten as he lifts a brow, “Several places.”
We got into his car and started driving. I glanced outside, checking everything out. “Where are we going, Matt?”
“It’s a secret.”
“Awww come on, tell me,” I whined. It’s not like I dislike secrets, but I like to know where I’m going. Call me a freak, but I want to plan things out and know exactly where I’m heading.
“Nope.”
I folded my arms, “With that attitude, I may leave New York a lot faster than I thought.”
“Then, I guess that’s my mission today.”
“Your mission?”
“Today’s mission is to show you the wonderful side of New York. It will be so great that you, my sweetheart, would want to stay here with me.”
“Really?”
“Yes, I’m going to make you fall in love with New York.”
“I look forward to it.”
“Good. Now, close your eyes.”
“I don’t know, Matt. I remember the last time you told me that. Didn’t turn out so well.” Last time I listened to Matt and closed my eyes, I ended up in the hospital.
“I didn’t know,” he mumbles.
“Okay. Okay, I’ll close my eyes. Stop frowning,” I said. I cover my eyes with my hands. I never like it when Matt gets upset, and he rarely gets upset.
When we stop, I can hear Matt’s door open, shut, and then he opens mine. He took my hand as we continued walking. I can feel people brush against me lightly. “Keep your eyes closed,” Matt said.
I can feel Matt’s hands over my eyes. “Ready?”
