Chapter 4 Alpha Jason

Brielles POV “Do you want to head home? Maybe shower? I can stay here while you—” I shook my head. “No, it’s okay. I showered this morning before my exam. I’m okay now… really,” I told Marlo. “Oh yeah, your exam. How’d that go?” he asked gently. I shrugged, staring down at my hands. “I’m not sure. It was harder than I anticipated, and I’m scared to look at the results.” “Oh, Bells, you’re selling yourself short. I’m sure you passed.” I sighed heavily. “I don’t know. And even if I did, I don’t want to risk seeing a failed test score right now. That would really send me over the edge.” He chuckled softly. “What if I check for you?” “But what if it’s bad, Marlo?” “You haven’t failed yet. Have some faith.” I hesitated before finally groaning. “Fine. But you look.” I logged into my student portal on my phone and handed it over to him. He clicked on the email, his face frowning slightly. Oh no. I failed. Then suddenly his eyes widened. “You passed!” he shouted, grinning like a smug cat. “No way!” I breathed in disbelief. “Look!” He shoved the phone into my hands. 86%. “I knew you’d nail it.” He pulled me into a congratulatory hug. I let out a shaky laugh. “Thanks. I really wish I could tell Mom.” His smile softened and he nodded quietly. After a moment, he glanced toward the ICU doors. “It’s getting late. Would you like a ride home? Maybe go pick up your car at least?” I nodded slowly. “Yeah. Her state hasn’t changed in a few hours, and it would help to have my car just in case.” I let the nurse know I was stepping out for a little while before following Marlo outside. The ride was silent. Not awkward. Just heavy. “Do you want me to go inside with you?” Marlo asked once we pulled up. I shook my head. “No. Thank you for everything, Marlo. I’ll call you tomorrow.” Something flashed across his face—sadness maybe—but my mind was too exhausted to dwell on it. I closed the car door and hurried inside. The second I stepped into the house and flipped on the lights, the air felt wrong. Heavy. Too still. My breath caught as I peeked into the living room. The man from the coffee shop. And the guy from last night. Both sitting casually on my couch. Their eyes locked onto mine instantly, and my heart slammed against my ribs. I spun around and bolted for the door, but the lean guy moved faster than what should’ve been humanly possible. He appeared in front of the door before I could even grab the handle. “We meet again,” he chuckled. “What do you guys want?” I snapped through gritted teeth. “Why are you following me?” The man from the coffee shop stood slowly, his piercing blue eyes fixed on me. “I need to know who your mother is,” he said firmly. “Alice Walker,” I bit out. He glanced toward the framed photo sitting on the table before picking it up. “The pathetic human that lives here is not your mother. I can tell genetically you both don’t look alike.” My jaw clenched. My long red hair and striking green eyes had always stood out next to Mom’s dark brown hair and warm brown eyes. “I don’t know who my biological mother is,” I admitted quietly. “She abandoned me at the hospital. Didn’t even sign my birth certificate.” His expression darkened. “What about your father? Where is he?” “Again, I don’t have one. They both vanished, it seems like. Almost into thin air.” “Now if you don’t mind,” I hissed, “please leave.” “No. Because you’re not telling us the truth,” he growled. “I am telling the truth!” I shouted back. His nostrils flared suddenly. “Your scent…” he muttered. “Why do you smell like me?” I blinked at him in disbelief before awkwardly sniffing myself. All I smelled was sweat, stress, and stale hospital air. Was this guy insane? “You’re crazy,” I snapped. “I don’t smell like you. I don’t even know you!” “You’re coming with me,” he growled, his eyes widening unnaturally. “Hell no!” I shouted. “My foster mother is in the ICU! I’m not leaving here—not even for a minute!” I shoved past him and grabbed my keys off the table, rushing toward the door again. Both men chuckled. Before I could even blink, the lean guy grabbed me like I weighed nothing. “Let me go!” I screamed as he carried me back and dropped me onto the couch. “At least tell me your names and what you want! I’ve answered all your questions!” The man with the blue eyes turned toward me slowly. “My name is Alpha Jason,” he said coldly. “And this is Beta Titan.” I stared between them. “Alpha? Beta?” I scoffed. “What are we playing, dress-up?” Titan let out a low whistle, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. “I don’t know, boss… are you sure?” “Don’t insult me, Titan.” Then Jason’s eyes landed back on me. “I need you to take a DNA test. The sooner, the better.” “And if I don’t?” His expression turned deadly serious. “I’ll come back, and I’ll take you back into my world by force. You have two weeks.” My stomach twisted. “I don’t have money,” I admitted quietly. “I’m in college, working as many hours as I can, and now with my mom in the hospital…” My voice cracked. “I’ll have hospital bills too.” Without hesitation, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a checkbook. “How much do you need?” he asked, his blue eyes studying me carefully. “I’m not asking you for money,” I said firmly. “I don’t need anything from you.” He muttered something under his breath while scribbling onto the check. “You look an awful lot like a woman I used to know,” he murmured. “You even scrunch your nose like her when you’re angry.” I immediately slapped a hand over my nose. Titan snorted loudly from behind him. “You smell like her too,” Jason continued, ignoring him. “If my suspicions are correct… you may be my child.” My breath hitched. “I need those DNA results ASAP. I’m not playing games, girl. You have two weeks.” He tossed the check onto the coffee table along with what looked like a swab in a baggy most likely with his DNA on it. I glanced at the check it read Three thousand dollars. “I’m punctual,” he said darkly, stepping closer. “And there won’t be a place you can hide from me. Understand?” He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look up at him. I scoffed and jerked my face away from his grip. “Two weeks!” Titan shouted dramatically as they headed for the door. “Don’t forget!” Then they were gone. And just like that, the suffocating, commanding presence left with them.
