Kyle POV
"What?" We were all caught up in the moment until Sophie's shrill voice shattered the silence. "They had only recently begun dating. A wedding is a significant step that I don't believe any of them are prepared to take. The goal would be to solve existing problems rather than create new ones."
"They only need to sign a piece of paper and make their decision public. It is up to them whether, between the four walls, their relationship is real or not. It's all good as long as there are no scandals surrounding their relationship. " The representative said this while closing his laptop and packing it in the bag he brought with him. I couldn't even respond. The information temporarily rendered my brain paralyzed.
"You have 1 hour to think about it before we prepare the measures. I will leave, so you can talk freely and I will return in an hour with the paperwork ready to be signed." He replied, picking up his bag and getting up. Tolga accompanied him to the door. And we all remain silent. Lara has something about her that makes me want to have her all to myself. I've never been in a relationship, and I'm not sure how it works or if I'll ever be able to have one. My life has been parties and women by description. I know I want to be with Lara now and if I have to give up those nights of s*x, I will, but marriage is another story. I can't imagine doing it without the commitment to life, and that scares me. It seems much more serious.
However, knowing that Lara is now completely mine and will move in with me helps to lighten the burden of this situation. I never believed in love and still do not, but she makes me want to be with her, to protect her, to care for her, and to be in her presence. Something in her eyes calms me as if all my fears and anxieties vanish at that moment; I've never been through this and never thought it was possible. But this is a marriage we are talking about, and another imposed by others; a requirement? So what if she grows tired of me and I refuse to leave the marriage? What if we can't get along? What if... I rub my eyes in frustration, we will have a lot of what if.
"I'm not going to marry. Examine your options for getting around this without marrying." Lara stands up and walks out of the room. Sophie gets up too and chases after her.
"Kyle, whatever decision you make, I fully support it. I see how you treat my sister, and I know she has feelings for you as well. But if you hurt her, have any questions, or simply want to live a life of partying and free s*x, I beg you not to accept this offer. Lara is far too innocent for all of this; she does not deserve to be hurt and destroyed in a fairy tale." Rob was staring at me menacingly. I nodded and then patted my shoulder as he left the room to be with his sister.
One hour to consider a decision that will affect you for a year or a lifetime is a joke. We only have one hour to decide the fate of our hearts. Lara stated that she did not want to marry me. Hearing her say those words hurt me a lot, more than it should. The idea of rejection made my heart cry in agony.
"I think you and Kyle should think about this together," Thomas warned me, but I ignored him and continued walking toward the door. Dean and Tolga followed me; they're probably interested in discussing the idea and its pros and cons with me. Yas has vanished, and I believe she is with Lara. I entered the room and left the door open for my friends to join me.
"What a f****d up situation!" Tolga grumbled as he sat on one of the room's small couches. Dean sits on one side, and I sit on the bed. In frustration, I ran my hands through my hair.
"I'd like to be with her. She gives me sensations I've never felt before. But what about marriage? I can't think of marriage as just a contract; when I think of it, I think of family, of sharing a life together, of love, but also of war." Dean drew a small smile as I explained.
"I actually think you're looking at this the wrong way. Obviously, marriage is what you believe in. You may believe it to be more or less, but it's whatever you want it to be. A real marriage is not what the paper defines, it's what the two involved define and that choice will be yours. " Dean tries to get me to realize that a signed document is one thing, but what we do as a couple is another.
"If you have decided to date, you should still do it with or without paper. Kyle, you easily pay the expenses associated with the breach of contract, but you're not the problem here. Dancers don't get paid the same as footballers. Lara will never be able to pay for all this and it's both your responsibility. You can always help her pay, but it will take years in court and you will lose millions. From an economic point of view, the best thing to do is to agree on this. You were going to be dating anyway, not like in those books and movies where you are forced to marry someone you don't know. If it doesn't work out, you just have to try to maintain the friendship and the farce. It won't be hard. "Dean tries to help me see other points.
"Kyle, I know the idea of commitment scares you. But it's like Dean says, marriage isn't 'exactly the paper, it's what you build and that's in your hands. Whether you want to start with baby steps or take a giant step and move forward, thousands of couples get divorced every year. You don't have children, it's just the two of you. If it doesn't work out, you just have to move on. " Tolga had a serious expression. I know that, for him, marriage is for life. That's how he was raised, in the belief that marriage is forever, and these words are something he also internalized when he decided to take the step with Yas, and it wasn't exactly his idea either. In order to stay in the country, he had to speed up the marriage process because his parents wanted him to get married, an arranged marriage— to a young woman back in Turkey. My situation was not very different from Tolga's at the time. Either he would marry Yas or he would have to go back and marry a girl he had only seen once in his life.
"I am almost in the same situation as you were," I stated, remembering their past and how they married each other.
"And I am happy now. Who knows, maybe a year from now you won't be so?"
"Tolga, Dean, we have to leave. Come on." I told them and they looked at me in surprise. "Where are we going?"
