Chapter 15 – A Glimpse of Eva

788 Words
"They were meant to be together, inseparable." Lily couldn't get those words out of her mind. They painted an image of Ethan and Eva together. She'd always thought that kind of relationship only existed on TV. "Is Eva beautiful?" Lily asked quietly. "She's beautiful." "The kind that makes you look away, but you can't," Luke said thoughtfully. "She comes across as aloof and detached." "It really makes people want to take over." "So, Ethan wanted to win her over?" Lily went on to explain. Luke gave her a knowing look. Eva was the one who pursued Ethan first. But once she had him, she wasn't interested anymore. Ethan was determined to keep her, and he chased after her for years. When they were together, he would do anything for her. And now? "She broke it off with him again." He took a moment to collect his thoughts before adding, "Ethan's like a dog on a leash—she calls, he comes." Lily sat quietly in the passenger seat, still feeling a bit uncomfortable from her earlier encounter with Ethan. He'd been pretty aggressive with her, and now she found it hard to imagine him being so submissive. She'd always seen him as aloof, even cold, during their time together. "You seem to know Ethan pretty well." "Are you two close?" Lily asked, trying to put the pieces together. Luke's lips curled into a smirk. "Me and Ethan?" "Not really." Lily blinked in surprise. "Eva made a pass at me once. So, you can probably guess what happened next. Ethan didn't have to say any more — Lily got the picture. Ethan was possessive and jealous, so it's likely he had negative feelings towards anyone who got close to Eva. About twenty minutes later, Luke dropped her off at home. Lily thanked him and gave him a smile before waving goodbye. Back at her apartment, she saw that she had several missed calls from numbers she didn't recognize. She ignored most of them, but when she finally picked up, Jason's angry voice came through the phone, "You slut!" "Who do you think you are, messing with my brother?" Lily couldn't help but laugh. "I'm single, Jason. "I can do as I please, especially with your brother." "You have the nerve to talk to me like that?" Jason's voice was filled with rage. She was amazed at his nerve. "I do, actually." "Now, if you don't mind, I'd like you to leave." Lily ended the call with a cool tone of voice. As finals drew near, Lily spent most of the week at school, helping out her students. It wasn't until Friday that Grace sent her a text with some surprising news. Grace: "Guess who's at your school today?" Ethan came by to give a lecture. I took a quick photo for you. Grace sent a photo of Ethan standing at a podium, looking just as composed as ever. Lily had assumed he'd rekindled things with his ex after their encounter, but it seems that wasn't the case. Grace sent another message with a photo of a woman. Grace: "Eva's here too. She's waiting for him outside his door, but he hasn't acknowledged her. "He's been really distant." Lily looked at the photo for a while. It was her first time meeting Eva. She's tall, stunning, with a flawless figure and long, sleek black hair. She was pale—almost glowing—and in the picture, she wore a faint, amused smile as she watched Ethan from a distance. Eva looked like a black swan, poised and untouchable. A few minutes later, Grace sent over a video. Ethan was stepping down from the podium after finishing his lecture when Eva reached out to grab his arm, but he pulled away. He avoided her on a few occasions. Eva didn't seem bothered, though. She just kept smiling and leaned in close to whisper something in his ear. Ethan's expression was as cold as ice. But when Eva reached for him again, he didn't pull away this time. Grace: "I had a feeling this was going to happen." The second Eva makes a move, Ethan can't resist. Lily: "So, why are you showing me all this?" Grace: "I just wanted you to see the woman who can knock Ethan off his pedestal." Lily: "Have they rekindled their relationship?" Grace: I heard that Ethan asked her to come back a few days ago, but she said no. So she shows up out of the blue, and he's giving her the cold shoulder. But if you look closely, you can still see the excitement in his eyes. Lily was right—Grace's next message confirmed it. Grace: "So, it looks like they're back together."
