Vaelith’s POV
“What exactly happened to you in the Rogue Lands?”
Zyren’s voice followed me through the blood-covered room and I stared at him silently.
The dead assassins lay around my feet and blood dripped slowly from my claws.
And still…his eyes remained on me, it was not with fear and not disgust but something else, something dangerous and laughed bitterly.
“You really want to know?”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
I then walked toward him slowly, the mate bond burned harder with every step and I hated how my body reacted to him, even now, especially now.
When I stopped before him, I lifted my bloody hand and pressed it against his chest and his heart rang hard beneath my palm.
“You sent me there,” I whispered. “So tell me, Alpha… what exactly did you think would happen to me?”
Pain flashed across his face again and then suddenly, the memories dragged me back again.
Back to hell.
….
Snow fell heavily around me and my bare feet bled against the frozen ground, I could not feel my fingers anymore and I had not eaten in days.
Every breath burned my throat.
The Rogue Lands, the place where unwanted wolves go to die.
I stumbled forward weakly and stomach twisted painfully from hunger and then I heard laughter behind me.
They were rogues and fear slammed into my chest instantly.
Three males walked out from the trees, they wore dirty clothes, sharp teeth and hungry eyes and then one of them grinned at me.
“Well, look what we found.”
I turned and ran immediately and their laughter followed me.
“Run faster!”
Panic choked me and branches cut my skin as I pushed through the forest but I was weak, too weak.
A hand then suddenly grabbed my hair hard and I screamed as my body crashed into the snow.
The rogue dragged me across the ground while laughing loudly and pain burned through my scalp.
“Pretty little wolf,” he mocked. “You’ll sell for good money.”
I clawed at his arm desperately.
“Let go!”
Another rogue kicked my stomach hard and air left my lungs instantly.
I then curled up shaking and nobody came to save me, there was nobody, not my family, not my mate, nobody and that truth hurt more than the pain.
One rogue then crouched before me and grabbed my chin roughly.
“You smell rich,” he said. “Maybe we keep you first before selling you.”
Fear flooded through me completely. No. No no no.
I tried to crawl away but they dragged me back laughing.
Tears burned my eyes and I truly thought that was how I would die.
Then one of them grabbed my dress and tore it.
Something inside me broke, it was not my heart because that already died when Zyren banished me.
It was something deeper, something ancient and a scream tore from my throat and then suddenly…
Power exploded out of me violently and silver light burst through the forest and the ground shook beneath me.
The rogues froze in horror.
“What the hell is that?!”
I did not answer, I couldn’t because I no longer heard anything clearly, but only rage and only blood.
My claws ripped through the first rogue’s throat instantly and hot blood splashed across my face.
The second rogue tried to run and I grabbed him and slammed him into a tree hard enough to crush his skull.
The last rogue fell to his knees shaking.
“Please!”
I stared at him and for the first time in my life… I felt nothing while killing someone.
His scream echoed through the forest and then silence returned and blood covered my hands.
My clothes, my skin.
I then stood there shaking heavily, I was terrified of myself and then suddenly…
I felt another presence, it was strong, ancient and dangerous and I turned slowly and then my breath stopped.
A man then stood between the trees watching me, he was tall, with dark hair and crimson eyes.
Power rolled off him so heavily that my wolf lowered her head instantly, even injured, even terrified, my body reacted to him.
He was not like a mate, he was something worse, and something powerful and his eyes remained locked on me.
It was like he already knew who I was .
Then he stepped closer and the snow crunched beneath his boots.
“You survived,” he said finally and his voice sent chills through me.
I then stepped backward immediately.
“Who are you?”
A dangerous smile touched his lips.
“King Vaelor Drakharis.”
My heart nearly stopped.
The Lycan King.
The monster every pack feared. He looked at the dead rogues around me again and then his crimson eyes returned to mine.
“So the lost Moon Heir survived after all.”
….
I blinked slowly and returned to the present, Zyren still stood before me, watching me carefully.
His face looked darker after hearing my silence, maybe he saw the pain inside my eyes, maybe he finally understood what he did to me and before he could speak again, guards suddenly rushed into the room.
“Alpha!”
Zyren turned sharply.
“What?”
“The royal guests have arrived for tonight’s gathering.”
His expression changed immediately and I smiled bitterly.
Back to Alpha duties, it was perfect timing.
Zyren looked at me again.
“We are not done talking.”
I walked past him.
“We never started.”
….
That night, the ballroom glowed with gold lights and music and powerful Alphas filled the palace.
Noble women stared at me everywhere I walk, some with jealousy and others with fear.
I enjoyed every second.
For three years, they believed I died begging in the dirt and now they could not stop looking at me.
I stood near the balcony sipping wine when another Alpha approached me and he smiled confidently.
“Lady Vaelith.”
I recognized him immediately. Alpha Rhazien of the Ironfang Pack. A known flirt.
“You survived the Rogue Lands,” he said. “That alone makes you fascinating.”
I laughed lightly.
“Fascinating?”
“And beautiful.”
His eyes dmove slowly over me and I felt Zyren’s stared from across the ballroom instantly, burning and heavy.
I did not look at him, not even yet.
Alpha Rhazien offered his hand toward me.
“Dance with me.”
I should refuse but instead, I placed my hand in his.
Let Zyren suffer.
Music filled the ballroom as Rhazien pulled me closer and one hand settled on my waist.
Then suddenly…
A growl exploded across the hall and the music stopped instantly and then gasped fill the ballroom.
Every head turned toward Zyren and his golden eyes burned with rage, his wolf pushed dangerously close to the surface and he wwe staring directly at the hand on my waist.
Sylvarae grabbed his arm quickly.
“Zyren!”
But he barely noticed her and jealousy filled his face openly now.
The entire ballroom saw it, including my sister.
And then I slowly stepped away from Rhazien and I walked toward Zyren carefully.
His chest rose heavily and the mate bond burned wildly between us.
When I stopped before him, I leaned closer slowly, close enough to feel his breath against my skin and then I whispered beside his ear:
“Careful, Alpha.”
I glanced toward Sylvarae.
“Your wife is watching.”
