THE WEDDING NIGHT

2772 Words
The wedding celebration had finally drawn to a close. Hours earlier, the entire hall had brimmed with laughter, music, dancing, and endless congratulations from family and friends. Everywhere Dora turned, people smiled at her with admiration, telling her how beautiful she looked and how fortunate she and Bryan were to have found each other. She had smiled until her cheeks ached, accepted embraces from relatives she barely knew, and posed for what felt like a thousand photographs. Now… Everything lay quiet. The silence inside the house felt strange after such a loud and emotional day. It pressed against her ears, making her hyperaware of every small sound—the distant hum of the refrigerator, the soft creak of floorboards beneath her feet, her own measured breathing. Dora slowly stepped into the bedroom that she and Bryan would now share as husband and wife. The room glowed softly under warm golden lights. Fresh rose petals had been scattered carefully across the bed, and scented candles filled the air with a calming fragrance of vanilla and jasmine. For a moment, she simply stood there. Still. Almost unable to believe this was real. A few hours ago, she had stood before hundreds of people and vowed to spend forever with Bryan. She could still feel the weight of all those eyes on her, the tremor in her voice as she spoke the words that would bind her life to his. Forever. The word echoed in her heart, both thrilling and terrifying. A soft smile appeared on her lips as she walked toward the mirror. Her fingers gently touched the sparkling wedding ring on her hand, turning it slowly to catch the light. Even now, it still felt unreal—this small circle of gold that changed everything. Mrs. Bryan. The thought made her blush slightly. She had practiced writing the name in her journal weeks ago, feeling foolish and giddy like a schoolgirl. She slowly removed her earrings and placed them carefully on the dresser, watching her reflection as she did so. Her wedding gown had already been changed into a simple but elegant silk robe that rested gently against her body. Her makeup had faded slightly after the long day, mascara smudged faintly beneath her eyes, lipstick worn away by champagne and kisses, but somehow she still looked radiant. Maybe it was happiness. Or maybe it was love. Perhaps it was simply the glow of a woman who had finally found where she belonged. Dora sat on the edge of the bed and released a slow breath, feeling the tension of the day begin to uncoil from her shoulders. Her heart was beating fast. Not because she was afraid of Bryan. No. Bryan had never given her a reason to fear him. In all their months together, he had been nothing but patient, gentle, understanding—everything she had once believed existed only in fairy tales. But tonight felt different. Everything about tonight carried meaning. Every gesture, every word, every touch would be weighted with significance. It was the beginning of a new chapter. The beginning of a new life. A life she desperately wanted to believe she deserved. A soft knock suddenly came from the door. Dora's heartbeat skipped instantly, her breath catching in her throat. "Come in," she said quietly, surprised by how steady her voice sounded. The door slowly opened. Bryan stepped inside. For a brief moment, Dora forgot how to breathe. He looked exhausted from the long day, yet incredibly handsome. His black suit trousers still fit perfectly against him, while the sleeves of his white shirt were rolled slightly upward, revealing strong forearms. His tie had been loosened and now hung askew, and the top buttons of his shirt were open, exposing the hollow of his throat. But it was not his appearance that made Dora's heart tremble. It was the way he looked at her. Like she was everything. Like the rest of the world had faded away and only she remained in sharp, brilliant focus. Bryan slowly closed the door behind him before leaning against it for a second, as if gathering himself. Finally, he smiled softly. "So…" he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "My wife is still awake." Dora immediately lowered her gaze shyly, heat flooding her cheeks. The word wife sounded different coming from Bryan. It felt warmer. More real. More permanent. She smiled nervously, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I could say the same thing about my husband." Bryan laughed quietly, the sound low and intimate in the hushed room. That laugh. Dora loved it so much. It was one of the first things that had drawn her to him—the way his whole face transformed when he laughed, how the sound seemed to come from somewhere deep and genuine. Bryan slowly walked toward her, his eyes never leaving hers, each step deliberate and unhurried. "You look beautiful," he said softly, his gaze traveling over her face as if memorizing every detail. Dora looked down shyly again, fidgeting with the edge of her robe. "I already looked beautiful today." Bryan shook his head immediately, reaching her side. "No," he replied gently, his voice firm with conviction. "Today everyone saw the bride—the dress, the veil, the ceremony. But right now… I'm seeing Dora. Just Dora. And that's even more beautiful." Those words touched her deeply, settling into a place in her heart she hadn't known was empty. Bryan finally sat beside her on the bed, leaving only a small distance between them. She could feel the warmth radiating from his body, smell the faint scent of his cologne mixed with champagne and cake. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was peaceful. Sacred, almost. Bryan leaned back slightly and released a tired sigh, running a hand through his hair and disheveling it in a way that made him look younger, more vulnerable. "I can't believe the wedding is over," he admitted, staring up at the ceiling. "It feels like we've been planning it forever, and now it's just… done." Dora smiled softly, grateful for the lighter turn in conversation. "You were nervous during the vows." Bryan looked at her with playful offense, his eyebrows rising. "I was not nervous." "You forgot part of your speech," Dora reminded him, unable to suppress her grin. "That was intentional," Bryan insisted, though his eyes sparkled with amusement. "You also stumbled over my middle name." "Your middle name is complicated." Dora burst into laughter, the sound bright and unrestrained in the quiet room. Bryan stared at her for a moment, completely lost in the sound, his expression softening into something almost reverent. "You know," he said quietly, waiting until her laughter faded, "I think that's my favorite sound in the world. Better than music, better than anything." Dora's laughter slowly faded into silence as emotion filled her chest again, pressing against her ribs. Everything about Bryan felt genuine. Safe. Comforting. And that scared her a little. Because deep down, beneath all the happiness of the night, there was still a hidden truth buried inside her heart. A truth that lurked in the shadows of her joy, waiting for the right moment to emerge and destroy everything. A truth she desperately prayed would never destroy this beautiful love. Dora quickly pushed the thought away, forcing it back into the locked compartment where she kept all her fears. Not tonight. She didn't want sadness tonight. Tonight belonged to joy, to new beginnings, to the man sitting beside her who had chosen her despite everything. Bryan noticed her sudden silence, the way her smile had dimmed slightly. "What's wrong?" he asked gently, reaching out to touch her hand. Dora forced a smile, hoping it reached her eyes. "Nothing." Bryan studied her carefully, his gaze searching her face. He had always been able to sense when something bothered her, could read the subtle shifts in her mood like others read books. But tonight, instead of pressing further, he simply reached for her hand and laced his fingers through hers. "You know something?" he said softly, his thumb tracing circles on her palm. "What?" "I've waited for this day for so long." His voice carried a weight of emotion that made her throat tighten. Dora looked at him quietly, seeing the vulnerability in his expression. Bryan smiled, but it was tinged with something deeper—relief, perhaps, or gratitude. "There were moments I thought I'd never meet someone who would truly understand me." He paused briefly, swallowing hard. "I thought maybe I was too set in my ways, too damaged from past relationships, too… much. Then you came into my life." Emotion slowly filled Dora's eyes again, blurring her vision. Bryan continued softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "You changed me, Dora. Before you, my life was just work and survival. I woke up every day doing the same thing over and over again, going through the motions without really living." He chuckled lightly, shaking his head at the memory. "Then suddenly you appeared and made everything brighter. You made me want to be better, to do better, to actually feel things again." Dora's throat tightened painfully, tears threatening to spill. Bryan lifted her hand gently and kissed it, his lips warm against her skin. "I mean every word I said at the altar today," he whispered, his eyes locked on hers with fierce intensity. "I want forever with you. Not just the good days, but all of them. The messy ones, the difficult ones, the ordinary ones. All of it." A tear escaped Dora's eyes, sliding down her cheek before she could stop it. Bryan quickly wiped it away with his thumb, his touch infinitely gentle. "Hey," he whispered, concern creasing his forehead. "Why are you crying?" Dora laughed softly through her tears, the sound watery and broken. "Because nobody has ever loved me the way you do." Her voice cracked on the words. "Nobody has ever made me feel like I was worth… this. Worth everything." Bryan's expression softened instantly, his eyes glistening with emotion. He moved closer to her, eliminating the small distance between them. "Well," he said gently, cupping her face in both hands, "get used to it. Because I plan on loving you for the rest of my life. Every single day, in every way I know how." Dora smiled emotionally before resting her head slowly against his shoulder, breathing in his familiar scent. Bryan wrapped an arm around her carefully, pulling her closer until she was tucked against his side. The room became quiet again. Outside, the night breeze moved softly through the trees, rustling leaves in a gentle whisper. Inside, two hearts beat together in peace, synchronized in a rhythm that felt ancient and new all at once. After a while, Bryan suddenly spoke again, his voice rumbling through his chest. "You know what my favorite moment today was?" Dora looked up curiously, tilting her head to see his face. "The kiss after the vows?" Bryan shook his head, a mysterious smile playing on his lips. "The dance?" "No." "The food?" Dora guessed, remembering how he'd praised the caterers. Bryan laughed, the sound vibrating through both of them. "Definitely not the food. Though the cake was good." Dora smiled, enjoying this game. "Then what was it?" Bryan looked directly into her eyes, his expression turning serious. "The moment you walked toward me down the aisle." Dora's breath caught slightly, her heart stuttering. Bryan's voice lowered, becoming almost reverent. "You looked at me like you trusted me with your whole life. Like you were choosing me, not just going through the motions of a ceremony." He smiled softly, but she could see the emotion swimming in his eyes. "That moment terrified me… and made me happy at the same time." "Why terrified?" Dora asked, her voice barely audible. "Because I realized I never want to disappoint you. I never want to be the reason that trust disappears from your eyes." He paused, his jaw tightening. "The weight of that responsibility hit me all at once, and I thought, 'What if I'm not enough? What if I fail her?'" Dora stared at him silently, her heart aching with a complex mixture of love and guilt. Her heart ached. If only he knew the secret she carried. If only he knew the fear that followed her every single day, the shadow that lurked just behind her happiness. Would he still look at her this way? Would he still love her this deeply? Would he still trust her with his heart if he knew the truth about her past? She quickly buried the thoughts again, shoving them down with practiced efficiency. Bryan gently touched her face, his fingers tracing the line of her jaw. "Don't disappear into your thoughts tonight," he whispered, his eyes searching hers. "Stay here with me. Be present." Dora nodded slowly, forcing herself to focus on this moment, this man, this love. "I'm here," she promised, and meant it as much as she could. Bryan smiled warmly before standing up suddenly, his movement breaking the intimate cocoon they'd created. "Wait here," he said, a hint of excitement in his voice. Dora frowned slightly, confused by the sudden shift. "Where are you going?" "You'll see," he replied mysteriously, already moving toward the door. He disappeared briefly into the sitting area connected to the bedroom, and Dora heard him rummaging through something. A few moments later, he returned holding a small velvet box, his expression almost boyish with anticipation. Dora looked confused, her eyebrows drawing together. "What's that?" Bryan sat beside her again and handed it over, his fingers brushing hers. "Open it." Dora slowly took the box and carefully opened it, her movements deliberate. Inside was a beautiful silver bracelet, delicate and intricate, with tiny charms dangling from it—a book, a heart, a small bird, each one meaningful in ways she would discover. Her eyes widened instantly, her breath catching. "Bryan…" "I saw it months ago," he said quietly, watching her reaction carefully. "And I promised myself I would only buy it for the woman who became my wife. I've been carrying it around for weeks, waiting for this moment." Dora looked completely speechless, her fingers trembling as she touched the bracelet. Bryan gently removed the bracelet from the box and carefully placed it around her wrist, his fingers deft despite their size. The metal was cool against her skin, but it warmed quickly. "It's beautiful," Dora whispered emotionally, turning her wrist to watch the charms catch the light. Bryan smiled, his eyes soft. "Not as beautiful as you." Dora shook her head shyly while laughing softly, a blush creeping up her neck. "You really know how to make someone cry." "Good tears, I hope," Bryan said, his voice tinged with concern. "The best tears," Dora assured him, wiping at her eyes with her free hand. Bryan leaned forward and kissed her forehead gently, his lips lingering there. Then her nose. Then finally her lips. Slowly. Tenderly. Like he wanted to memorize every second, to imprint this moment permanently in his memory. Dora closed her eyes immediately, melting into the warmth of the kiss, letting herself get lost in the sensation. There was no pressure. No rush. No expectation beyond this simple expression of love. Only love. Pure and uncomplicated and real. When they finally pulled apart, Bryan rested his forehead against hers, their breath mingling in the small space between them. "I love you," he whispered, the words carrying the weight of a vow. Dora smiled softly, her eyes still closed. "I love you more." Bryan laughed quietly, his breath warm against her face. "That's impossible." "It's true," Dora insisted, opening her eyes to meet his gaze. "No," he replied playfully, his eyes dancing with amusement. "I'm definitely winning this competition." "We'll see about that," Dora challenged, her smile widening. Dora smiled brightly for the first time that night, a genuine smile that reached all the way to her eyes and chased away the shadows. And as Bryan pulled her gently into his arms again, cradling her against his chest, she silently prayed that this happiness would last forever. Because for the first time in a very long time… Dora truly felt loved. Cherished. Worthy. And somewhere deep inside her heart, she hoped the secrets of her past would never come searching for her future. She hoped they would stay buried, forgotten, powerless to destroy what she and Bryan were building together. But hope, she knew, was sometimes a fragile thing.
