Power Beneath Her Skin
Elara woke with fire in her veins.
Not the kind that burned her skin, but the kind that pulsed deep inside her bones—alive, restless, awake. She gasped, sitting upright as early morning light filtered through the tall windows of the Alpha’s quarters.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Last night came back in fragments—the mark glowing, the ground trembling beneath her feet, the shocked faces of the pack.
And him.
Kael.
She pressed a hand over her chest. Beneath her skin, something moved—like energy coiling, waiting to be unleashed.
A soft knock echoed at the door.
“Elara,” Kael’s voice followed, low and controlled. “Are you awake?”
“Yes,” she whispered.
The door opened slowly.
Kael stepped inside, fully dressed, his Alpha presence filling the room like a storm waiting to break. His silver eyes locked onto hers.
“You feel it too,” he said.
“I don’t know what’s happening to me,” Elara admitted.
Kael moved closer. “Neither do I. But whatever awakened last night… it isn’t normal.”
“You sound afraid.”
“I’m cautious.”
That scared her more.
---
The training grounds buzzed with whispers as Elara followed Kael outside.
“She’s the one.”
“The Alpha’s mate.”
“No… she’s dangerous.”
Kael’s hand brushed hers, close enough to steady her.
Elder Rowan stepped forward. “The council demands answers.”
“They’ll get them,” Kael said coldly.
Rowan studied Elara. “The power she released—no mate has ever shown such force before bonding.”
“Bonding?” Elara echoed.
“You’re not bonded yet,” Kael said sharply. “Which makes this worse.”
“And when this happened before?” Elara asked.
“It started wars,” Kael replied.
---
They entered the ancient stone circle.
“If this power is yours,” Kael said, “we must control it.”
“And if I can’t?”
“Then the pack will fear you.”
Elara stepped forward anyway.
The stone vibrated beneath her feet. Heat surged through her body. The mark on her shoulder flared, light bleeding through her skin.
“Focus on me,” Kael ordered, stepping into the circle.
Silver eyes locked with hers.
“You control the power,” he said. “It does not control you.”
She screamed as the force exploded outward.
Stone cracked. Wind howled. Wolves were thrown back.
When it ended, Elara collapsed.
Kael caught her.
“She shaped the power,” Rowan whispered.
Kael lifted her into his arms. “Anyone who touches her answers to me.”
Elara looked up weakly. “What am I?”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
“Something this world hasn’t seen in a very long time.”
Far beyond the pack borders, another Alpha felt the surge of power…
And smiled.
