The Pack That Wants Me Gone

955 Words
I knew something was wrong the moment I woke up. The bond felt… restless. It pulsed beneath my skin like a living thing, warm and uneasy, as if it were warning me. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to calm the strange sensation. Ronan. I could feel him—far away, yet painfully close. The day passed in a blur. Every sound made me jump. Every shadow felt heavier than it should. By the time night fell, my nerves were stretched thin, my thoughts circling the same terrifying truth. His world was coming for me. A sudden chill swept through my room. I didn’t need to turn around to know he was there. “They know,” Ronan said quietly. My heart dropped. “Know what?” “About you.” I spun to face him. He stood near the door, his expression hard, jaw clenched as if he were holding back something violent. “Who knows?” I asked, though I already feared the answer. “My pack.” Fear wrapped around my spine like ice. “You told them?” “No.” His golden eyes darkened. “They felt the shift. An Alpha’s bond doesn’t stay hidden for long.” I swallowed. “And what happens now?” Ronan took a step closer. “Now they’ll demand to see you.” A laugh escaped me, sharp and humorless. “That’s not funny.” “I’m not joking, Elara.” His voice softened. “They won’t welcome you.” “Because I’m human.” “Yes.” The word landed like a sentence. I crossed my arms, forcing myself to breathe. “Then don’t take me there.” His silence was answer enough. “You’re not seriously considering this,” I whispered. “They won’t stop hunting until they confirm what you are,” he said. “If I keep you hidden, they’ll assume the worst.” “And the worst is… what? That I exist?” “That you’re a threat,” he replied. Pain flared in my chest, sharp and familiar. “I never asked to be your mate.” “I know,” he said immediately. “But they won’t care.” I turned away, my reflection in the dark window looking pale and small. “What if they decide I don’t belong?” Ronan’s voice dropped. “Then I’ll challenge them.” My breath caught. “Challenge them how?” “As their Alpha.” The weight of his words settled heavily between us. “You’d risk everything for me?” I asked. His gaze locked onto mine. “You are everything.” The bond surged, heat rushing through my veins so fast it stole my breath. Before I could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the house. My blood froze. Ronan was instantly alert, his body shifting into something lethal. “Stay behind me.” The knock came again—stronger this time. Ronan opened the door. Two figures stood on the porch. A tall man with ash-blond hair and cold gray eyes, his presence rigid and assessing. Beside him stood a woman—strikingly beautiful, her silver-blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, her gaze sharp and burning with unmistakable hostility. Her eyes landed on me. And she smiled. “So,” she said softly, her voice laced with venom. “This is her.” Ronan stepped forward. “Seraphine. You weren’t invited.” Seraphine. Something twisted painfully in my chest. “Relax, Alpha,” she replied, her smile widening. “The pack deserves to meet the human who stole our future.” Stole. I clenched my fists. “You have no right to speak to her that way,” Ronan growled. “Oh, I have every right,” she snapped. “I was meant to be your Luna.” The word hit me harder than I expected. Luna. Ronan’s jaw tightened. “That decision was never yours.” Seraphine’s eyes flicked back to me, scanning me from head to toe. “She’s weak. Fragile. She’ll die the moment danger touches her.” I stepped forward before fear could stop me. “I’m standing right here.” Her smile vanished. “How brave,” she said mockingly. “Do you even understand what you’ve dragged into our world?” “I didn’t drag myself anywhere,” I shot back. “Your Alpha found me.” The air crackled. Ronan’s hand brushed my back, grounding me. “Enough.” The blond man cleared his throat. “The council wants answers, Alpha.” “They’ll get them,” Ronan said coldly. “On my terms.” Seraphine leaned closer, her voice low and dangerous. “This bond will destroy you.” Ronan met her stare without flinching. “Then I’ll burn with it.” Silence fell. Finally, she straightened. “Bring her to the pack grounds by the next full moon.” “That’s not a request,” the blond man added. They turned and left without another word. My legs trembled the moment the door closed. Ronan was beside me instantly, his hands steadying my shoulders. “I’m sorry.” “For what?” I whispered. “That your world wants me dead?” His expression softened, pain flashing across his face. “For pulling you into a war you never chose.” I met his gaze, fear and something stronger twisting together in my chest. “Then teach me how to survive it,” I said. A slow, dangerous smile curved his lips. “That,” he said, “I can do.” And for the first time since the bond awakened, I realized— The pack wasn’t my greatest threat. The war had already begun.
