Chapter 2: Reflection Tricks

629 Words
The air in the Mirror Room was heavy, thick with the smell of dust and something faintly metallic. The four teens stood frozen, staring at the walls covered in mirrors. Every reflection seemed slightly… off. Alex rubbed his eyes, convinced it was just his imagination, but the split-second delay in his reflection made his stomach twist. “Okay… that’s weird,” Tyler muttered, taking a cautious step back. “My hand… my hand just moved before my reflection did.” Emma tilted her head, scrutinizing the mirrors. “It’s subtle, but it’s there. They’re not just mirrors. They’re… alive.” Mia clutched the yearbook she had brought from the library for notes, though she wasn’t sure why it mattered in a room of mirrors. “Look at the way they move. Not exactly like us. It’s like… they’re anticipating, or… testing.” Alex crossed his arms, trying to calm himself. “We need to stay calm. Don’t panic. Don’t touch anything.” But as soon as he said it, one of the mirrors flickered. The reflection of the room behind them shifted, showing a hallway that didn’t exist one lined with flickering lights and shadows that moved independently. Tyler yelped, stumbling back. “Did you see that?” Mia whispered. Alex nodded. “Yeah. And that’s not the weirdest part.” He pointed to a small mirror in the corner. A pencil on the floor in front of them lifted slightly, as if pulled by invisible fingers, and dropped on the other side of the mirror. The reflection showed it landing before it actually did. Emma shivered. “It’s… messing with time.” “Or perception,” Alex added. He glanced around, noting the odd angles of the mirrors. Some reflected hallways that didn’t exist; others showed the same room but with shadows crawling along the walls like fingers. Tyler swallowed hard. “So… what, we’re stuck in some haunted mirror dimension now?” Mia shook her head. “Not yet. But if we’re not careful, it could trap us. The smallest mistake, a step in the wrong direction, and… we could end up in there instead of here.” Suddenly, a low whisper echoed through the room: “Come closer… join us…” All four froze. The sound seemed to come from the mirrors themselves, soft, coaxing, almost hypnotic. Emma’s hand twitched, as if it wanted to reach out. “Don’t touch them,” Alex warned sharply, stepping between her and the mirror. “Whatever’s in there, it’s not friendly. It’s trying to lure us.” One by one, they tested it cautiously. Mia placed her hand near the surface without touching it. The reflection mimicked her, but with a subtle smirk that she didn’t make. Tyler nudged a small book toward the edge of a mirror. In the reflection, it slid back toward him on its own, then snapped upright the instant he looked away. “This is bad,” Tyler muttered. “It’s learning. It’s… alive.” Emma’s eyes narrowed. “And it’s playing with us. Whatever it wants, it’s not going to be satisfied with just scaring us.” Alex took a deep breath. “Then we need rules. No sudden movements. Observe everything. Every crack, every flicker, every delay in the reflections those are our clues. That’s how we survive.” The mirrors shimmered slightly, as if responding to his words. Whispers filled the room again, now louder, surrounding them: “Stay… stay… or join us forever…” Alex swallowed, heart pounding. “We’re not joining. Not now. Not ever.” And for the first time, the four teens realized the Mirror Room was more than just a strange room. It was a predator, watching, learning, and waiting for them to make a mistake.
