“Kelly sweetie wake up, it’s time for school” I heard my mum say as she shook me awake. I sat up on my bed and looked at my mother who was smiling down at me.
“But mother I want to stay with you today. I want to help with work and designing” I whined looking at my mother with so much admiration. She giggled a little before dragging me out of bed and into the bathroom where I showered and got ready for school. I went downstairs when I was done to wait for my driver since I wasn’t legally allowed to drive yet. I heard footsteps and looked towards the stairs, there my dad and brothers where talking about the game of last night. I cleared my throat and one I was sure they had noticed me, I waved slightly. My father and brothers chuckled at my behavior and sat on the couch close to me.
“Aren’t you meant to be on your way to school?” Alex, one of my brothers asked.
“Waiting for the driver” was my short reply. I didn’t know what to say and it’s not because I was shy or afraid but because they were too busy that we hardly talked like a normal family. We all loved each other but most of the time my parents and brothers were focused on their work and I kind of feel like I wasn’t need well that was until they sat me down and talked to me. Ryder, my little brother was at a friend’s house and was going to school from there; mum and dad said he needed to hang out with people his own age because he was like a sixteen-year-old in the body of a ten-year-old.
“The car is here sweetie” Mum announced as she entered the living room. I hugged my family and skipped to the car.
“Good day miss” the driver greeted before opening the door for me. I was not allowed to interact with any of my drivers because of all the enemies my dad had; my parents feel one of the workers may be working for my dad’s enemies and that’s means no talking to any of the workers. I got to school ten minutes before the first bell that means I had time to talk to my best friends before we actually start classes. I went to my locker where my best friends were already waiting for me. We were three girls and were best friends. Chiara is Italian and the cook of the group, Gemma is American and the wild person in the group and I am Canadian and the fashion queen in the group. We are all fourteen years old and we love to party.
“You’re late” Chiara exclaimed hugging me. She wasn’t one to be late in fact she gets to school thirty minutes before school starts and waits for us; I don’t blame her though, when you come from a house where everyone is always on time well you always will too.
“It’s just five minutes to bell time Chiara so she isn’t late” Gemma said rolling her eyes. She is normally later than me so I’m actually surprised to see her here.
“Gem, you’re early today. I’m surprised” I voiced out my thoughts which made her laugh.
“Well mum and dad were at it again so I had to leave before I’m put in the middle again” she explained. Gemma’s parents had been arguing for the past three to four months now and she always deals with it but I think it’s getting worse.
“sorry about that” Chiara and I apologized.
“It’s no biggy I mean four more years and I’ll be free” she replied popping the gum I didn’t know she was chewing.
“Well my parents aren’t the best either. They just want me to show to the world that we’re the perfect family like after the interviews and all, we won’t talk till the next one” Chiara informed us. I mean I always knew they was something wrong but didn’t ask because she never looked like she was ready to say something; she was always spacing out and anytime we went to visit, her parents weren’t there and she’ll tell us they went on a business trip.
“I think yours is much worse, having parents who aren’t there” Gemma concluded angrily. She didn’t like the fact that some parents just use their children just like some past events; Gemma’s parents would always dress Gemma’s sister up and make her do things she didn’t like for their own popularity but when she was fed up with it, she exposed them leaving them to where they are now, average and let’s just say from that day, Gemma’s sister had been restricted from being close to any of their family members. The bell rang stopping our conversation.
“Well bye for now” Gemma said walking towards her first class. Gemma had math with Mr. Miles while Chiara and I had math with Mrs. Happiness; don’t let the name fool you, she’s an angry maniac. Chiara and I responded with a quick goodbye before making our way to our first period. Luckily we got there before Mrs. Happiness and took out seats in our regular area. Mrs. Happiness came in some minutes later and proceeded with today’s lesson.
It was finally time for lunch which meant all students will be going to the refractory; it was compulsory. I met with the girls in front of the refractory and we all went it. Our school system was different in the sense that instead of students standing in line for their lunch, we were served seated.
“So guess who was in my class today?” Gemma asked excitedly. It had to be Chad I mean she has been crushing on him for years now even though he actually never noticed.
“Chad?” Chiara asked teasingly. Gemma giggled in response and we all laughed.
“Did you actually talk to him this time?” Chiara asked.
“No but we sat close to each other and are now partners to a science project” she replied excitedly.
“well that’s a good start” I encouraged. she just nodded like if she had opened her mouth she would have screamed.
“yeah, we’re so proud of you” Chiara joined in.
“you guys are the best” Gemma said hugging the both of us.
“Kelly Cole, Chiara Kings and Gemma Black report to the principal’s office” we heard the principal announce. I looked behind Gemma and noticed everyone’s confused faces; we haven’t caused any trouble this semester so why are we being called. I took my backpack and went to the principal’s office with the girls behind me. When we got there we were asked to sit down and wait for the principal to call us in.
“did we do anything wrong?” Chiara asked wondering
“Not that I know of” Gemma replied
“Did you like do anything to any teacher’s car or smash a class window?” Chiara asked Gemma and I.
“Nope” Gemma and I replied together.
“The principal will see you now” the lady at the desk said. The girls and I walked quietly into the office waiting for the punishment that never came instead what I saw surprised me, my father and my brothers looking at me with sad eyes.
“What’s going on?” I asked confused. Something terrible had happened and I wanted to know what.
“I don’t know how to say this” Alex said stalling.
“Quit stalling and tell me please” I begged.
“well sweetheart, your mother just passed away. She was in a serious accident and well the doctors couldn’t save her” my dad explained sadly. I looked at my father’s side and saw Ryder crying his eyes out. For the first time in my life I felt numb; my life was starting to crumble and I didn’t know what to do, all I knew was that I had to be strong for Ryder. He was only ten-year-old. I hugged my family as we cried silently.
“You can go home early miss Kelly” the principal said smiling sadly at me. I hated pity and everyone knew that. My friends, family and I walked out of the principal’s office sadly. My mum was Chiara and Gemma’s mother figure and now she was gone. I still couldn’t believe it I mean I saw her this morning and now she’s gone. We got into my dad’s car and the driver drove off.
