“It wouldn’t have been easy for the animals to fight the lure of the pied piper, for by then they had lost quite a bit of ground, and his power was very strong. The fate of the animals hung in a delicate balance. But very often in one’s arrogant use of his power lies his defeat; very often, drunk with success, man over-reaches to his undoing. And this is what happened here that provided the animals with the much-needed break. Maybe this was again the kind act of providence, which often takes the side of the underdogs, strays from its path of neutrality a little, and bestows a wee bit of advantage.
