Episode 3: The Moon Answers Back

1155 Words
Luna woke to silence. Not the familiar silence she lived with every day—the absence of sound—but a deeper stillness, heavy and expectant, as if the world itself were holding its breath. Her eyelids fluttered open. White stone ceilings arched above her, etched with glowing lunar sigils. The air smelled of herbs and magic. Soft blue light pulsed gently from the walls, warm against her skin. The infirmary. Memory crashed into her all at once. The attack. The pain. The light. Her heart began to race. Luna lifted her hands slowly, half-expecting to see blood, scars, proof that what she remembered had been real. But her skin was smooth—unmarked. Even the old ache in her ribs, the one that never truly went away, was gone. She pressed a hand to her chest. Steady. Strong. Whole. What am I…? The door opened quietly. Alpha Kael Draven stepped inside. He looked different. Not weaker—never that—but… stripped. His uniform jacket was gone, sleeves rolled up, faint bloodstains still visible at the cuffs. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, as if he hadn’t slept. The moment his gaze met hers, the air shifted. The pull was immediate. Invisible threads tightened between them, warm and insistent, wrapping around her heart. Luna’s breath caught, her wolf stirring with a low, unfamiliar yearning. Mate. The word echoed through her mind—not spoken, but known. Kael stopped a few steps away from her bed. “You’re awake,” he said quietly. She nodded. For a moment, neither of them moved. The silence stretched—charged, fragile. “You healed yourself,” Kael said at last. “Do you remember it?” Luna hesitated, then slowly nodded again. Her fingers curled into the sheets, nerves fluttering through her like trapped birds. Kael exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through his hair. “That ability hasn’t been seen in centuries. Lunar healing magic doesn’t just mend flesh—it restores what was broken at its core.” His silver eyes softened, something like awe flickering through them. “It responded to you instinctively. Without training. Without incantation.” Luna swallowed. Her hands began to glow faintly, silver light bleeding through her skin as if answering his words. She gasped, startled, and tried to pull them back beneath the blanket. Kael stepped forward immediately. “Don’t suppress it,” he said, voice low but steady. “It’s part of you.” His hand hovered near hers—not touching, but close enough that Luna could feel the heat of him. The bond tightened painfully, humming between them like a living thing. She looked up at him, eyes wide with fear. He saw it. And something in his chest broke. “You’re safe,” he said, softer now. “I won’t let anyone hurt you.” The words settled deep inside her, warm and terrifying all at once. --- The academy did not celebrate miracles. It feared them. By morning, rumors had spread like wildfire through Mooncrest’s stone halls. “A healing light.” “She should have died.” “She’s dangerous.” “She’s cursed.” Luna felt it the moment she stepped out of the infirmary—eyes following her, whispers slicing through the air like knives. Students who had once ignored her now pressed back against walls as she passed, faces pale with uncertainty. Fear had replaced mockery. That was worse. She kept her head down, moving quickly, but it didn’t stop them. “Monster,” someone hissed. Her steps faltered. Hands shook. Before panic could swallow her whole, a presence moved beside her. Kael. He walked at her side without touching her, his very presence a shield. Conversations died instantly. Wolves bowed their heads. No one dared approach. The Alpha was claiming space around her. Luna’s chest tightened. This wasn’t protection. This was a declaration. They reached the council chamber—ancient, circular, carved with the symbols of the original packs. Elder Alphas waited inside, their expressions grim. “This is unnecessary,” one snapped the moment they entered. “The girl is unstable.” “She is powerful,” another said coldly. “And unregistered.” Kael stepped forward, positioning himself subtly in front of Luna. “She is under my authority,” he said. “Any evaluation will be conducted by me.” Murmurs rippled through the chamber. “Draven,” an elder warned. “You’re too close.” Kael’s jaw tightened. Luna felt the tension coil tighter between them—fear, anger, restraint. She didn’t understand all of it, but she understood one thing clearly. He was fighting for her. The eldest Alpha leaned forward. “What is she to you?” The bond surged violently. Luna gasped, clutching her chest as silver light flared uncontrollably around her, flooding the chamber. Gasps erupted. Power rolled outward in waves, pressing everyone back. Kael moved instantly, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her against his chest. “Enough!” he roared. The light obeyed him. Silence fell. Kael held her firmly, one hand cradling the back of her head, his body a barrier against the world. Luna trembled against him, overwhelmed, frightened, but not alone. “She is mine,” Kael said hoarsely. “And I will answer for her power.” The words rang through the chamber like a vow. And a sin. --- That night, Luna stood alone on the academy balcony, moonlight bathing her skin in silver. She stared up at the full moon, heart aching with emotions she couldn’t name. She felt different. Stronger. Seen. But also hunted. Footsteps approached behind her. She didn’t turn. “I shouldn’t be here,” Kael said quietly. Her shoulders tensed. “But I am.” She finally looked at him. The moonlight caught his eyes, turning them molten silver. The bond pulsed between them, undeniable now—no longer a whisper, but a roar. “You’re afraid,” he said. Luna nodded. “So am I,” he admitted. That surprised her more than anything else. “I’ve spent my life controlling power,” Kael continued. “Suppressing instinct. Enforcing order.” His gaze softened. “You unravel all of that just by existing.” He stepped closer. The space between them vanished. “If I claim you,” he said, voice rough, “the world will turn against us.” Luna’s chest ached. Slowly, she lifted her hand—and placed it over his heart. The bond surged, warm and fierce, wrapping around them both. She didn’t need words. Her choice rang loud enough to shake the stars. Kael closed his eyes, forehead resting against hers. “Moon witness me,” he whispered. “I will protect you—even from myself.” Above them, the moon burned brighter. And somewhere deep within Luna’s silent soul, the Luna wolf lifted her head and howled—not in fear… …but in answer.
