Episode 8: The Moon Demands a Price

868 Words
Power always collects its debt. Luna felt it before dawn—before pain, before weakness—like a thread tightening deep inside her chest. The moonstone at her throat dimmed, its glow flickering as if struggling to breathe. She woke with a gasp. The world tilted. For the first time since her awakening, Luna’s hands trembled. Kael was at her side instantly. “Luna?” She tried to sit up. Failed. Her strength drained as if poured into the earth itself. Every healing she had given, every sigil she had rewritten, every life she had pulled back from the edge—it all came crashing down at once. Kael gathered her into his arms, panic breaking through his Alpha composure. “Get the healers. Now.” She caught his sleeve, fingers weak but insistent. She shook her head. No healers. He stared at her. “You’re barely conscious.” Her lips parted—still no sound—but the bond carried her meaning straight into his chest. This is not an injury. This is balance. The moon was collecting. --- By midday, word spread. The Lunar Queen had fallen ill. Council elders gathered again, this time uneasy, uncertain. Ancient texts were dragged from sealed vaults. Moon-priests were summoned from distant territories. Their verdict was grim. “The Lunar Seat is not a crown,” one priest said carefully. “It is a conduit.” Another continued, “Each time she uses power to alter fate—heal, protect, change the balance—the moon takes something in return.” Kael’s voice was low, dangerous. “What does it take?” The eldest priest met his eyes. “Life force. Years. Or… a bond.” Silence crashed down like thunder. Kael felt the truth before the words finished echoing. The mate bond pulsed painfully. Luna stirred weakly in his arms, eyes sharpening despite her exhaustion. She understood. She shook her head immediately. No. Kael swallowed hard. “If breaking the bond stabilizes you—” Her hand tightened on his shirt, eyes blazing silver despite her weakness. I will not survive without you. The bond flared, fierce and undeniable. The priests exchanged uneasy glances. “There is… another way,” one said slowly. “But it is forbidden.” Kael turned. “Speak.” “The moon can be appeased,” the priest said, “by equal offering. A choice freely given.” Kael didn’t hesitate. “Take mine.” “No,” the priest said sharply. “Not life.” “Authority.” The word landed heavy. “A reigning Alpha,” the priest explained, “can surrender his claim—his dominance, his standing. His power would flow to the Lunar Seat, easing the burden.” Kael laughed once, humorless. “You want me stripped.” “I want you balanced,” the priest corrected. Luna’s eyes widened in horror. She pushed herself upright, shaking. Absolutely not. Kael cupped her face, forehead resting against hers. “Luna. Listen to me.” She shook her head, hands flying desperately. You are Alpha. You protect. You lead. He smiled softly. “I chose you before I chose power.” Her breath hitched. “If my dominance is the price to keep you alive,” he continued quietly, “then it was never truly mine to begin with.” The moonstone flared. The bond surged—agonizing, radiant. Luna felt it then. The truth. This wasn’t a loss. It was a transformation. Tears streamed down her face as she signed slowly. Then we choose together. --- The ritual was performed at moonrise. No witnesses but the moon itself. Kael knelt in the ancient circle, chest bare, spine straight. Luna stood before him, unsteady but radiant, silver light wrapping her like a crown of stars. The moon burned full overhead. Kael placed his hand over his heart. “I surrender dominance not out of defeat,” he said clearly, “but devotion.” Power tore from him—sharp, searing, intimate. He groaned as the Alpha force he’d carried since birth flowed into Luna, into the Lunar Seat, into the balance of the world. Luna cried out soundlessly as it hit her—too much, too sudden— Then steadied. The moonstone blazed. The earth is still. When it was over, Kael collapsed. Luna caught him. She held him as his breathing slowed, as his aura softened—not gone, but changed. Still strong. Still dangerous. But no longer ruling by dominance alone. The priests bowed deeply. “The balance is restored,” one whispered. --- Kael woke at dawn. The world felt different. Quieter. Not weaker—just… human. Luna lay beside him, asleep but peaceful. Color had returned to her skin. The silver glow beneath it was gentle, steady and warm. He brushed her hair back, relief crashing through him. Then he felt it. Something watching. Far beyond Mooncrest. Beyond the packs. Beyond the moon itself. A presence old enough to remember when Lunar Queens ruled not as healers— But as judges. Kael stiffened. The moon outside dimmed briefly, as if eclipsed. In the distance, something smiled. Because the moon had been appeased. But the stars had noticed.
