Chapter Seven - A Losing Battle

1574 Words
{{Queen Merrieʻs POV}}         Alpha-Luna have ruled for as long as the legends say, maybe even longer than that. We have always been a peaceful pack, even with the fact that we are the strongest of all ruling packs in Canada.          It was never our wish to take over all of Canadaʻs central region but rather combine and protect all of its inhabitants, humans, or otherwise. Besides the vampires with their immortal lives, werewolves and sorcerers were second in lifespan respectively. Some living as long as 500 years. Yet still, some would not make it to live that long. We could survive for centuries but only if we are not killed or become sick. Those would be the only 2 reasons we would die. Being killed is a higher reason for our demise as sickness can be overcome.         Our relationship with other supernaturals was on very good terms. No one wanted to lose their people to war. As long as everything was peaceful we could co-habitate without problems. It took a long time to reach these terms as each felt superior to the other. But with a lot of meetings among the leaders, a happy medium was reached. However, we knew that some were not accepting of the treaties that were made but for the most part, we lived in harmony.          That is, until that fateful day of King Jaxx and his greedy heart.                   “What to do you mean, not there! They were there when I checked 10 minutes ago.”                 Mindlinking the girls “Ash and Aura where are you?!!”                 “Mommy, weʻre at Bluemanʻs bush picking berries for our trip to our new home” the happily                    replied. No! Bluemanʻs bush was at least a 10-minute walk. Trying not to scare them…                 “Girls, listen carefully, mommy needs some of those delicious berries right this minute. Do you think you  can shift and run home as                  fast as you can? Letʻs make it a race and see which one of my awesome girls can come home first.”                  Mother comes in and sees the panic in my eyes. She links me…                 “What's going on?”                 “Mother, the twins are at Bluemanʻs bush. They went to pick berries for the trip. Iʻm trying to get  them home now.”                  “Oh Goddess no, the temporary shield I put up doesnʻt cover the bush. Your father and I will head out now. Under no circumstance are                  you, Maddox and Ariess to leave this house, do you understand me Grace? Weʻll get the girls and come back home. If the guards get                  here before we get back, have them wait, weʻll teleport together.”           Iʻm stunned, standing there in the middle of the room with my mate and child not knowing what will happen. I know collaboratively we can fight the army and even win with the extra training we all have but I understand where mother is coming from. If this prophecy is to see itself to fruition, there must be survivors of our lineage to make it happen.  {{Queen Merrie}}                 “Ashford, we need to get to the girls before Jaxx does. I pray to the Goddess he is still a ways away.”                  “How do you want to do this if we encounter him, my love. Are we to fight in human form or will we shift?” Ashford asks of his Queen                    and mate.                  “Letʻs shift now. We can travel faster by wolf. The girls will be in wolf form and if we need to run faster, we can carry them back. I will                   mask our scents” Merrie hated the thought of running instead of standing her ground and fighting but there was much more at stake                  than her pride. Much more.          As they approach Bluemanʻs bush they can hear the girls talking happily about who is gonna win. They are getting ready to shift. They catch their grandparents' scents and turn toward them.                  “Granny! Papa!” they exclaim                 “Hush my babies, weʻre gonna play a game of hide and seek okay? I need you to shift now. I will lead in front of you and Papa will                   follow behind you. We are going to stay very, very quiet. Do not even let your steps make a sound.”                 “Okay Granny” the girls whispered.         Merrie led the girls stealthily through the tall grass. Making sure to keep low so as not to give their location away. Slowly, they moved, checking the air for any hint of danger. They continued to cautiously move along.  {{King Jaxx}}         Feeling their presence, Jaxx mind linked his army…                 “Half the men, stay downwind, while the other half, split on each side. Do not to get ahead or  they will catch wind of your scent.”                  “James, you and Gamma Jessie will take the lead to the right” Jaxx mind linked                 “Johnathan you and Beta Clark, take the left.”                  “Iʻll lead from the rear”                 “Father, Iʻd like to keep James with me.”                 “This is not up for debate!!” King Jaxx growled. Johnathan knew better than to argue now.                 “At my command, close the circle from the left and right and weʻll trap them in the middle.” They moved in quietly like a net gathering fish.  ((Queen Merrie}}         Feeling something is sinister and oddly wrong, she started picking up speed. The girls followed suit with their grandfather closely behind. She could see the house up ahead, but something felt terribly, terribly wrong.                 “Attack!!!”          Merrie grabbed Ash and Ashford grabbed Aura and started to sprint! One of Jaxxʻ wolves bit down on the heel of King Ashford, while Jaxx went for the jugular! Ashford let go of Aura for fear Jaxx would get her and in one swift movement Jaxx ripped his throat wide open!! Aura, in full panic mode, kept running behind her grandmother but couldnʻt keep up! Merrie tossed Ash forward telling her to run as fast as she could and turned to grab Aura! But Jaxx had her hanging in his mouth by her neck. He looked coldly at Merrie as the pack moved in closer. With a resounding crunch of his jaws, Auraʻs body went limp. Looking at both her mate and granddaughter, Merrieʻs eye went black. She was hellbent on revenge and showed her fangs and readied herself for the fight.                  “Granny!!!” whimpered Ash         Merrie turned and sprinted for Ash with the rest of the pack at her heels! She could see the circle closing in front of her granddaughter! She launched for the nearest wolf that was blocking her babyʻs way! Her jaws opened wide and fit itself over the wolf's jaw and half his head! She used every muscle in her powerful jaw and chomped down till she felt the jaw bone crack! The claws on her back heels pushed forward at full force into the ribcage and tore straight through to the spine as she jerked her head back and ripped his bottom jaw from his head. The wolf lay dead, blood pouring from the huge open gap of his head and torso.          Jaxx slowly walked toward Merrie as she watched his Beta walk back toward her with a motionless pup in his mouth. He dropped Ash at her foot and snarled at her. She was heartbroken. She looked past the wolves as they closed in on her and could see Herrodʻs guards appear behind Grace as she watched in horror what played out in front of her. She ran to help but the protection shield her mother put up would not let her cross and stopped the pack from seeing or hearing her. She screamed for her babies, for her father, for her mother. Merrie looked at her daughter as if to say she was sorry she couldnʻt save the girls before turning for the last final battle of her life. Grace could see her motherʻs wolf slowly engulfed by the pack that would tear her she shreds. One lone wolf stood idly by with a frightening smile on his face. While another laid by the wolf her mother had killed.                  “Grace, we must leave now,” said Fuse, Herrod's guard.                 “I canʻt leave my family!!”                 “We have to, your mother's shield will dissipate 3 minutes after sheʻs taken her last breath.”                 Grace could still her mother fighting as wolves were being killed and tossed before finally losing sight of her and hearing her mother's                  last howl. She howled back long and weepingly. Maddox joined her as they cried for their pups, her father and her mother.          Fuse moved quickly to teleport them far from this place of heartbreak and sorrow. Leaving orders for a lesser guard to lie in wait until all  the pack members leave, then gather the Queen and her fallen family and teleport their bodies back as well.          Fuse could already feel Queen Herrodʻs sorrow as she felt her bond to Queen Merrie dissipate.
