Chapter Nine - A Means To An End

1440 Words
{{Graceʻs POV}}         We are now at our new location. We are in mourning for the 4 lost lives of ours. I am numb and find myself just going through the motions. I look at my new surroundings and find it to be a beautiful and roomy home with a fireplace, upstairs bedrooms, an attic area and even a greenhouse. It also has all the makings for a farm with a barn, stable and fields for animals. Just like our old home, but not. I will miss that old home. Maddox and I raised our family in the home with mom and dad. But I need to move on. I still have one more daughter left and I need to stay strong for her. She is the last female of our lineage. She will be the one to carry forward in regaining our territories and bring back the peace my grandmother once bestowed on everyone. I gather my daughter Ariess in my arms and softly sing….                         If you need me, youʻll find me there                         Where the wind softly blows                         Past the open prairie fields                         Where the needle & thread grass grows                         Listen for the whippoorwills song                         That sweetly chimes in your ear                         Let it soothe your soul, sweet pup aglow                         And know that my hearts always near                         Aspen & spruce grow high above                         Itʻs shadows cast by the moon                         The Boreal forest will call out your name                         To the Goddess sing your tune                         Cloaked by your fur, dark as night                         Iʻm here in the light of the moon                         Follow the scent of the sweet smell of musk                         To the place where the Wolf Willow bloom                         Let not your heart be hurt                         If you cannot find me                         I am everywhere you are                         My sweet Alpha-Luna in thee         I watch as my daughterʻs eyes slowly fall and her breathing slows. She is headed somewhere in dreamland. I sit there thinking of the prophecy as told to me by my mother….. {{Johnathanʻs POV}}             “You called for me father?”             “Yes Johnathan, sit down”             “Iʻd rather stand”             “Suit yourself!” King Jaxx growled. Johnathan sat scowling at his father. Jaxx turned his chair to              look out the picture frame glass overlooking the pack territory. Johnathan walks behind his father              and leans back and props himself on his father’s desk looking at what his father is looking at.              “You see that?” pointing “As far as the eye can see, will be yours to rule. But I need to get                something off my chest and I want you to know the truth.”             “Father, I think this talk is a little too late donʻt you? Shouldnʻt you have had this talk with both              James and I?” I said sarcastically             “You will do well to just shut your mouth and listen. Today was an unfortunate incident. Yes I am              responsible for what happened to your brother as well as not listening to you. You knew your             brother better than I ever did. With my always traveling, I only really got to know you when you             traveled with me and never truly got to know James. I underestimated the training experience              he lacked and he paid for it with his life.” Jaxx waited for sympathy from Johnathan but got                none.              “Okay, so if thatʻs your apology, I donʻt accept it. You can shove it! Your apology will never bring              James back. And YOU father, will carry that burden with you for the rest of your life! I hope it             eats at you from the inside out!"                “You think Iʻm apologizing to you!? I am the King. I apologize for nothing! Get your head out              your ass boy and come to the realization that this is your life. War is your life! You will be the              next Alpha of this pack and you will rule accordingly. I didnʻt fight for the last 150 years so you             can screw up the empire Iʻve built for you.”             “What happened over the last 150 years ago that made you the bitter person you are today?              Mother said you were never like this. She wishes the old Jaxx would return to her. She misses              that person. I told her I would never understand what she meant because Iʻve only, weʻve only              known the person you are now.”             “150 years ago, I was a young Alpha still finding my way in the world. My father was just as              ruthless as I am if not more. I vowed to never rule like him. The difference between him and me              is that he showed me so much love. Unlike what I have done to both you and James. Aside              from his ruling, we had a great father-son relationship. Everything I learned, I learned from him.              Everything that is, except how to be a good father.” father had a faraway look in his eyes. “My             father left for an expedition in the hopes of taking over further north. There was a pack territory              he was hungry for. It was rich in minerals. Mining that would make him the richest Alpha in these              parts of Canada, in all parts of Canada. But he had no information on the pack that ruled the             area except for the fact that it was a bunch of she-wolves. He thought itʻd be an easy takeover.             He underestimated the pack. He and his pack members were slaughtered. I was devastated             and hellbent on revenge. I was approached by a dark Sorcerer by the name of Sabien Thorn.             He said there was a way to defeat this pack and if I overtook the northern region Iʻd avenge my             father’s death and become the richest pack in the central region. The riches wasnʻt as important             as the avenging part so I made a pact signed in blood with Sabien that I would kill              everyone in that northern pack along with all of their allies including supernaturals. In return, I and              my descendants would rule forever over werewolves, while Sabien and his descendants would rule              over sorcerers. Sabien did tell me to make sure that I carefully understood what the pact entailed. I              just blew it off that itʻs just a pact, what could happen. Well, A LOT.  Power became my greed. I              craved it and still do. I felt I held up my end of the pact but Sabien grew restless but didnʻt say why.              Then when I found out your mother was pregnant with you, I decided it was time to expand my              territory to include the Eastern and Western regions. I told Sabien of my plans at which he replied              that I have not yet kept to my end of the bargain. When I questioned him, he warned me that I              didnʻt clearly understand the pact. This pact was selling my soul and there was a prophecy that              was included.”             “Wait so youʻre saying that 150 years youʻve been on a rampage not knowing you didn’t fulfill              your obligation? And what is this prophecy you are talking about?” Johnathan shook his head             in disbelief. He was ready to laugh out loud at the absurdity of it. Jaxx glowered at his son,              hearing the tone in his voice.             “Anyway! I tried to beat the prophecy out of Sabien but all he said was I could find it on the walls             of the Cave of Souls in Polaris. So after killing Sabien, I set out to find this cave and find out              what was in the prophecy. Having nearly died I finally found it. When I returned home your             brother was already born.”             “And? What was the prophecy all about?”          As King Jaxx recited the prophecy to Johnathan, his eyes darkened, he loathed his father for his callous acts that lead to this day. His fatherʻs carelessness would be his family’s demise. It ends now.  Taking a dagger from the sheath tied to his waist, Johnathan puts Jaxx in a chokehold while slowly sliding the dagger through the back of the chair as it enters his father's back. Twisting the dagger, he whispers “not on my watch” while his father takes his last breath.
