It wasn't long before the news reached me. Ethan had gone back to the battlefield. He'd volunteered completely for free, not even asking for any payment at all. "Is this guy out of his mind? "He kept muttering that place was where he truly belonged." My friend shook his head, completely baffled by what Ethan could possibly be thinking. When Ethan was twenty, he'd burned with ambition, desperate to carve out a name for himself. But that old fighting spirit had died out long ago. I knew the real reason, though. He was going to atone. After that, wind blew across every corner of the land. I settled into a quiet, steady life with Richard, and I never saw Ethan again. Mountains rise high, roads stretch far, and each of us walks our own way home.
