Chapter 8: "The Unexpected Offer"

1126 Words
2 years Before......... Jihoon stood outside the orphanage gate, staring at the street ahead. The cold wind brushed against his face, carrying the weight of his newfound freedom. He was finally out—no longer under the control of the orphanage, no longer waiting for a future that never seemed to come. But with freedom came uncertainty. He had no family, no plan, and no real place to call home. As he walked aimlessly through the streets, wondering where he would sleep that night, a sleek black car pulled up beside him. The window rolled down, and a voice called out, “Jihoon?” Startled, Jihoon turned to see a man sitting behind the wheel. His suit was sharp, his hair slicked back, and his expression both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Jihoon narrowed his eyes, trying to place the face. It was Seungmin. Jihoon recognized him immediately. Seungmin had been a visitor to the orphanage a few times, always talking with the director about some business for an election. He wasn’t a politician himself, but he was involved in the campaigns, working behind the scenes to influence decisions and ensure outcomes. His presence at the orphanage had always seemed distant and businesslike, but now, here he was, pulling up beside Jihoon like an old friend. “Seungmin?” Jihoon said, unsure why the man would stop for him. Seungmin smiled, stepping out of the car. “You remember me,” he said, his tone casual yet smooth. “I saw you leaving the orphanage. Figured you could use a lift. Where are you headed?” Jihoon hesitated, glancing at the ground. “Nowhere, really. Just... trying to figure things out.” Seungmin nodded, leaning against his car. “I see. No family waiting, no friends nearby?” Jihoon shook his head. “Not really.” Seungmin studied him for a moment, his gaze lingering longer than Jihoon felt comfortable with. There was something in his eyes, an intensity that Jihoon hadn’t noticed before during Seungmin’s visits. “You know,” Seungmin began, “I’ve got a place. It’s big, and I’m often alone. If you need somewhere to crash until you get on your feet, you’re welcome to stay.” The offer took Jihoon by surprise. He hadn’t expected anyone to reach out to him, especially not someone like Seungmin. But there was something unsettling about the way Seungmin was looking at him now, something beyond mere kindness. Jihoon’s instincts told him to tread carefully. “That’s... really generous of you,” Jihoon said cautiously. “But why? You don’t even know me.” Seungmin chuckled softly, pushing off the car and taking a step closer. “I know enough. I know what it’s like to feel alone, to have no direction. I’ve been there before. But you…” Seungmin’s eyes lingered on Jihoon, scanning him with a deliberate gaze. “You’re different, Jihoon. You’ve always stood out. You’re not like the others at the orphanage.” His eyes drifted lower, assessing Jihoon’s frame. “You’ve grown into quite a man. Tall, lean, with those sharp features—your jawline, your eyes, your lips… It’s not just your determination that sets you apart. You’re… striking. Handsome, even.” Jihoon’s discomfort grew as Seungmin’s words became more personal. The way Seungmin spoke, admiring his body, made Jihoon feel uneasy. There was something predatory in Seungmin’s tone now, a thinly veiled desire that made Jihoon want to pull away. “I’ve always had a soft spot for you, Jihoon,” Seungmin continued, his voice lower. “Not just because you’re focused, but because you’ve become someone people can’t help but notice. I respect that… more than you know.” Jihoon shifted uncomfortably, unsure of where this was leading. He appreciated the kind words, but there was something off about Seungmin’s tone, something that made him feel as if this wasn’t just a friendly offer. Seungmin reached out, placing a hand on Jihoon’s shoulder. “Come on,” he said, his voice lowering. “I can help you. We could... get to know each other better.” Jihoon froze. The meaning behind Seungmin’s words became clear, the subtlety gone. His grip on Jihoon’s shoulder tightened slightly, and his gaze became more intense, lingering longer than it should have. “Get to know each other better?” Jihoon repeated, his voice tinged with confusion and discomfort. Seungmin’s smile widened. “You’re a smart guy. You know what I’m saying.” Jihoon’s body stiffened as realization hit him. This wasn’t about helping him. Seungmin had other intentions. The casual confidence, the lingering stares, the subtle touches—it all made sense now. Seungmin wasn’t just offering him a place to stay; he was offering something more, something Jihoon had no interest in. “I appreciate the offer, Seungmin,” Jihoon said, stepping back, trying to put distance between them. “But I think I’ll figure things out on my own.” Seungmin’s smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. “You sure about that? I’m offering you stability, a chance to get on your feet. You don’t have to be out here struggling alone.” Jihoon shook his head firmly. “I’m sure.” There was a long pause, the tension between them thick in the air. Seungmin’s eyes darkened slightly, and for a moment, Jihoon thought he might press further. But then, Seungmin nodded, stepping back toward his car. “Alright, Jihoon,” Seungmin said, his voice colder now. “But remember, my offer still stands. Don’t be too proud to ask for help when you need it.” Jihoon watched as Seungmin got back into his car, the engine revving as he pulled away. As the car disappeared down the street, Jihoon let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. The encounter had left him feeling unsettled, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that things were far from over with Seungmin. As Jihoon walked away from the orphanage for the last time, he felt the weight of Seungmin’s offer pressing down on him. It wasn’t just the discomfort of the moment that lingered—it was the realization that someone as powerful as Seungmin had taken an interest in him, and not in the way Jihoon had hoped. The thought made him shudder. He had to move forward on his own, without relying on Seungmin or anyone else. But as he walked away, Jihoon couldn’t help but wonder if Seungmin’s eyes were still on him, waiting for another opportunity to make his move. And in the back of his mind, Jihoon knew that rejecting Seungmin’s offer might have been the first step into a much more dangerous game. ---
