Chapter 5: The Final Test ‎ ‎The auditorium buzzed with anticipation. Janet adjusted the mic clipped to her blouse, smoothing invisible wrinkles from her dress. The lights were hot, the crowd vast—but she had long since shed her fear of the spotlight. Tonight, she stood as the keynote speaker for the National Women’s Empowerment Summit. The same city that once whispered about her was now silent to hear her voice. ‎ ‎She stepped onto the stage to a round of applause. ‎ ‎Then, she saw him. ‎ ‎Derrick. ‎ ‎Seated near the back. Eyes fixed on her. No media entourage, no Anita, no mask. Just a man—haunted and hollow. ‎ ‎Their eyes locked for a fleeting second. Her heart skipped, then steadied. She didn’t flinch. ‎ ‎Behind him, Naomi sat, nearly unrecognizable. Gone were the flashy outfits and sharp confidence. She looked... humbled. Regretful. Their eyes met too, and this time, Janet did flinch—just a little. Naomi gave a small nod. Not a plea for forgiveness, just a silent admission: I was wrong. ‎ ‎Janet turned her gaze back to the crowd, raised her chin, and began to speak. ‎ ‎“When the world breaks you, don’t stay broken. Build again. Not from what was lost, but from what’s inside you.” ‎ ‎Her words rippled through the room like fire. ‎ ‎That night, after the event, Janet walked alone to her car parked behind the building. The shadows moved—and then stepped forward. ‎ ‎“Janet.” ‎ ‎Derrick. ‎ ‎She froze. Part of her wanted to walk away. The other part—the part still tied to a memory of love—waited. ‎ ‎“What are you doing here?” ‎ ‎“I had to see you,” he said, voice raw. “You were incredible tonight.” ‎ ‎She folded her arms, guarded. “Flattery won’t fix anything.” ‎ ‎He exhaled. “I never stopped loving you. I just... didn’t know how to fight. Everything spiraled—Anita, the pressure, the lies. I lost myself.” ‎ ‎Janet stared at him. “You didn’t lose yourself, Derrick. You gave yourself away.” ‎ ‎He nodded. “I know. And I regret every moment that I didn’t choose you. But I don’t know how to fix this. The wedding, the scandals, Bannerman—I'm trapped.” ‎ ‎“No, you’re not,” she said calmly. “You’re just scared.” ‎ ‎“I want to be the man you saw in me. But I don’t know if I can get back there.” ‎ ‎Janet took a slow breath. Then her words cut like a blade—but with grace. ‎ ‎“Then this is your final test, Derrick. Be the man I fell for. The man who stood for something. Or walk away forever. Because a real man doesn’t live in confusion—he knows what he wants and fights for it.” ‎ ‎He looked at her—truly looked—and for a moment, she saw the flicker of the old Derrick. But she didn’t wait to see what he’d choose. ‎ ‎She turned, walked to her car, and left him standing in the dark. ‎ ‎In her rearview mirror, he remained still, caught between the world he built and the woman he lost. ‎ ‎ ‎---
