Chapter Four

2084 Words
[Nessa P.O.V.] The rest of the day was a blur after my heartbreaking meeting with Elijah, the alpha’s son. I had longed for my mate for so long, that it hurt that he had rejected me so easily. Though I was heartbroken, I was determined to work through my tasks to make the guests feel as comfortable as possible. The hours passed by both uneventfully, and quickly as she plates the macarons that she made the Luna in the beautiful try so she could display each flavor individually in a line. The display was beautiful, and something she had taken pride in. My mother came over to me and picked up the tray of macarons and cakes that I had made, absorbing my grief of being rejected. “I will take them up to the dining hall, go get some rest. You had a long first day and I am sure that Luna will love these.” “Thanks mom.” My gratitude was clear as I hung up my apron on the hook with my name on it and made my way to the exit. I was not planning on going straight home as I needed to get some fresh air so I can put the feelings of the rejection behind me and figure out why it didn’t hurt as bad as everyone had told me it would if that happened. I was hurting, but mostly confused. I also could tell that it didn’t hurt Elijah as much as it would have hurt a full wolf either. My feet carried me to the edge of the territory where Addie and I had spent the night, well, at least until midnight and I had fallen asleep like the fool I was for being so tired. I leaned my head back against a tree as I looked out at the forest, knowing it went on for only a few more miles before it broke into Broken Arrow, the up-and-coming suburb of Tulsa Oklahoma, and a very large city for a pack of werewolves to live close to that it almost felt dangerous, perhaps that is why the rejection didn’t hurt as much as it should have. I heard a branch crack behind me, and I whipped around to look behind me to see Addie, and I relaxed offering a smile to my best friend. “Hey girl.” I greeted and gently patted the ground beside me. “I saw you slink off and figured that you were coming here. Did something happen?” Addie was concerned, her voice told me as much as she sat down beside me her gaze giving me a once over before an almost imperceptible nod that she could see I wasn’t hurt in any way. “I met my mate today, and he rejected me. It didn’t hurt as badly as everyone said it would. Is it because I am not a werewolf, or because it wasn’t meant to be?” I asked and I was almost ashamed to hear the edge of tears in my voice. Addie would know how much this hurt me emotionally if it didn’t hurt physically. I had grown up hearing that my mate was precious, and something to be treasured then as soon as he met me, he rejected me. I didn’t understand, and I desperately wanted to. “It didn’t even hurt him that bad either…” I trailed off, sounding dejected, knowing that Addie must think that I am pathetic for reacting this way. Addie’s thin arms pulled me into an awkward side hug as stayed silent before she spoke. “I am willing to say that if the rejection didn’t hurt you or him as much as it should have then I think you were not meant to be fated mates. The moon goddess must have mated the two of you together so that you would welcome someone else with open arms… someone you wouldn’t have accepted before.” Her wisdom was valuable to me, and I could see the reason in her words. Had someone from another pack claimed me as their mate, I likely wouldn’t have been so open minded about them before now because I wanted to stay near my family, going to another pack would have been something I feared. If I am not going to lie to myself, I still fear going to another pack. “The two of you shouldn’t be this far from the packhouse.” A deep voice sounded behind the two of us causing Addie and I to not only jump apart by whip around. “Who are you?!” Addie exclaims, pushing me behind her something that made me wince as I realized it meant that Addie considered me someone she had to protect now that she knew I didn’t have a wolf, after all what could an elf do to protect herself. The man just gave us a warm smile as his eyes stayed glued to me. “Get out of my way wolf, you are in between me and my mate.” [Leo P.O.V.] Ryan and I had arrived on the Night Stalkers pack grounds an hour ago, and the Alpha had given us a tour with his newly of age daughter hoping that the shrill woman would be one of our mates, she was not. She was annoying, both Ryan and I agreed on that. We were sitting on the couch drinking whiskey as I saw the future Alpha coming up the hallway from the kitchen, he looked confident with nothing out of the ordinary and went upstairs presumably to look for his father. I was growing tired of all the she-wolves looking at me with hungry eyes, hoping that I would take one of them to my bed and chose them as Luna, but I got this treatment everywhere, even in my own pack as I was in my mid-twenties with no Luna in sight. My mate had eluded me so far, but I was patiently waiting for the moon goddess to lead me to her at the right time. When I was eighteen, I had slept my way through college, being out of the pack had given me the freedom and opportunity to do such without any repercussions, and I knew Ryan had to. Though as soon as we returned to the pack, we put our playboy days behind us. I had zoned out, but I snapped back to attention when a wonderful smell hit my senses and my wolf started going crazy. It was coming from a middle aged woman with deep brown hair and brown eyes as she carried a tray of macarons and cakes into the kitchen. “What’s up man?” Ryan asked, noting my reaction and knowing what I sensed. I decided this would be best to discuss through mind-link so I opened my mind to him. I smell my mate on that middle aged omega she-wolf. Middle aged? He sounded surprised as he leaned forward to look at the woman coming back out of the dining room. “Ma’am!” I called aloud to catch her attention before beckoning her over to me. “What can I do for you, Alpha Brandon?” Her voice was polite, but she did not pull the same reaction from me as her scent did, causing me to frown. I thought quickly. “Do you have a daughter?” I asked after a moment of hesitation. The omega looked surprised, but she nodded. “Her name is Nessa, and she works in the kitchen as well. I just sent her home for the day, but she is likely going to take a walk through the woods as it often soothes her mind.” She reveals with a hint of curiosity in her voice. I dismiss her, giving her my thanks as I look at Ryan, getting up from the couch. “Alpha Monroe, I am going for a walk with my beta if you don’t mind.” I say, and get dismissed, seeing him link his pack that I am allowed to roam free around his pack. Outside I pick up the scent, dismissing Ryan to go back to our rooms so that I can talk to my mate alone. As I began to track the scent of my mate through the woods, I saw another girl who looked related to the Luna of this pack, so I was surprised that I hadn’t seen her in the packhouse yet. However, she seemed to be following the same scent trial as I was. I wondered if this she-wolf knew my mate. I hung back as I linked Ryan. A friend might be meeting her out here, so I am going to try to see if she is my mate from a distance first. Keep me posted, boss. I could almost see the fake salute Ryan was giving me and rolled my eyes. He was an i***t sometimes. As I approached, the mouth-watering scent of limes and pie filled my senses. Key lime pie had never been my favorite before, but damn did it smell good now. There was no denying it now... she was my mate. Her hair had been let down recently from a ponytail as there was a soft kink in her long red auburn locks. I cleared my throat and saw the two who were in an embrace tense up. “The two of you shouldn’t be this far from the packhouse.” My voice took on a husky tone having my mate so close to me without being able to touch her. They stood up and the unknown she-wolf pushed my mate behind her. I frowned at this display. “Does she think our mate is weak?!” My wolf protested as he attempted to growl at the she-wolf in between me and her. “Who are you?” The she-wolf asked. I took a breath, getting my wolf under control before I spoke. “Get out of my way wolf, you are in between me and my mate.” “Mate?!” She looked surprised, looking back at the goddess behind her. Her gray eyes had widened, and I was surprised that her eyes were gray as it was a color that wolves rarely had. Her skin was flawless, begging to be touched. Her clothing hugged her curves, hiding most of her body but giving just enough to be teasing and I could feel myself getting hard at having her writhing under me, or on top of me… the possibilities were endless. “Is he the one that rejected you?!” The unknown she-wolf exclaimed pulling me from my thoughts. “Rejected?” I gasped, looking at the goddess that was my mate, who her mother said was Nessa. “I have waited my entire adult life for you. I would never reject you.” I begged her with my eyes to please understand, wanting her to come out from behind her friend and embrace me but I could tell she wasn’t having the normal reactions mates would. I don’t care what she is, she is mine. I thought, wanting to growl and push her friend aside to take her in my arms and make everything okay. “Addie, this isn’t who rejected me. Elijah Monroe rejected me.” She said, her voice sounded like music to my ears as I watched her step out from behind her friend. “I’ve heard of second-chance mates… and it appears you are mine. Will you reject me to?” Her chin was held high as she looked at me, but I could tell she was afraid of what I would do. “Never.” I promised, pulling her into a tight embrace as her body pressed up against mine perfectly, and I knew the moon goddess had paired me with the perfect little mate. “I will never hurt you.” I continued, pressing my face into the top of her head which only came up to my chest as I held her close to me. She trembled, but soon relaxed. “I will leave the two of you alone…” Her friend said, making her exit very quickly as being a wolf, she knows exactly what happens when two mates find each other. You have your Luna, Ryan. Her name is Nessa, and she is beautiful… and mine. I told my beta across mind link. WOOHOOOOO. He yelled, clearly excited.
