Chapter 10: The Unseen Shift

Sera stepped through the black security archway flanking the entrance to the lower hall. The small green light flashed, completely silent. The ceramic blade hidden beneath her silk cuff remained undetected, resting cold against her inner forearm. Kael stepped through a second later. The arch immediately shrieked, flashing an angry, pulsing red. "Guns on the tray, Kael," the guard at the door muttered, holding out a hesitant hand. Kael didn't break his stride. He used his massive shoulder to effortlessly brush the guard aside, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the back of Sera's head. He ignored the metal detector's frantic beeping, moving with the heavy, unstoppable momentum of a freight train. "Let him through," her father’s raspy voice echoed from the far end of the room. Sera walked into the lower hall. It was a bunker masked as a boardroom. There were no windows, only thick stone walls and a long mahogany table surrounded by twelve high-backed leather chairs. The air hung heavy with the bitter stench of cheap cigar smoke and expensive cologne. Her father sat at the head of the table. Julian occupied the first chair on his right, swirling a glass of amber liquid, his posture deliberately sprawled. He smirked as Sera approached. She walked straight to the first chair on the left. Before she could touch it, Kael was there. He took the weight of the heavy wooden chair, sliding it back and then perfectly into place as she sat. He immediately settled into a motionless stance precisely one foot behind her left shoulder. The heavy leather of his shoulder holster creaked faintly in the sudden quiet of the room. Vincenzo and the remaining capos filed in, the harsh scrape of chair legs loud against the stone floor as they took their seats. "Let’s get this over with," Julian said, slamming his glass onto the polished wood. He pointed a finger at Sera. "I don't know why we’re playing this game, old man. She's been out of the family for five years. She doesn't know the ports, she doesn't know the books, and she sure as hell doesn't know the streets anymore." Sera folded her hands on the table. She deliberately tapped her right index finger against the mahogany. Clack. The heavy silver signet ring caught the glare of the overhead chandelier. Julian’s eyes snapped to her hand. The arrogant smirk slid completely off his face, replaced by a sudden, ugly flush of red. "You gave her the crest?" he demanded, shooting a furious glare at their father. "I took it," Sera corrected smoothly. "It belongs to the one who can hold the room, Julian. Not the one who drinks his lunch." Julian shot out of his chair. "You arrogant little b***h—" He took a heavy half-step around the table toward her. Kael moved. It wasn't a warning. It wasn't a threat. It was a violent reflex. His hand snapped to the grip of his pistol under his jacket, his thumb clicking the safety off with a sharp, audible snap that cracked like a whip in the dead silence. Julian froze mid-step. Vincenzo and two other capos flinched, their hands instinctively flying to their own jackets. Kael didn't draw the weapon, but his pitch-black eyes were locked dead center on Julian’s forehead. The tension in his broad shoulders promised immediate, lethal violence if Julian moved another inch. "Kael," her father barked, his voice laced with sudden, sharp irritation. "Stand down. He’s your blood." Kael didn't shift his gaze. His thumb remained clamped firmly over the safety mechanism. He completely ignored the old man sitting at the head of the table. He didn't even blink. He was waiting. Julian’s breathing turned shallow. Sweat broke out on his upper lip as he darted a panicked look toward his father. "Tell your f*****g dog to back off!" Sera let him sweat for two full seconds. She watched the fear crawl up Julian's throat. Then, without turning her head, she casually reached back and lightly brushed her knuckles against the rough fabric of Kael's trousers. "Relax, Kael," she murmured softly. The suffocating tension in the room instantly shattered. Kael’s hand dropped from his holster. He stepped back into the shadows behind her chair, instantly morphing back into a perfectly obedient phantom. The capos stared. Her father frowned deeply, his grey eyes narrowing as he looked between the towering enforcer, his trembling son, and Sera. He hadn't noticed the subtle physical touch, but he clearly registered that his most loyal weapon had just completely ignored his direct command. "Sit down, Julian," Sera said, her voice flat and utterly devoid of emotion. "We have business to discuss."
