Chapter 4: Practice and Previews

1220 Words
The days flew by in a whirlwind of notes and lyrics. Lila spent every spare moment practicing her song—sometimes with the headphones, sometimes without. When she wore them, her voice felt like it could fill a stadium, rich and powerful and full of magic. But when she took them off, she focused on finding that same strength from within, on letting her own voice shine through, even if it was a little quieter, a little more vulnerable. One afternoon, she was in her room, singing softly to herself, when she heard a knock on the door. She froze, her voice cutting off mid-verse. “Lila?” her mom’s voice called out. “Can I come in?” Lila quickly took off the headphones and tucked them into her drawer, then called back, “Yeah, come in!” Her mom pushed open the door, holding a tray with a glass of milk and a plate of cookies. “I heard you singing,” she said, setting the tray down on Lila’s desk. “You sound wonderful, honey. I didn’t know you were working on a new song.” Lila felt a flush rise to her cheeks. “It’s for the spring concert,” she said. “I’m… I’m going to perform it.” Her mom’s eyes widened, then filled with pride. “Really? That’s amazing, Lila! I’m so happy for you. I know how much you love singing.” She sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at Lila. “Is everything okay, though? You seem a little… I don’t know, intense lately. Is there anything you want to talk about?” Lila looked at her mom—at the warm, caring expression on her face—and felt the urge to tell her everything. To tell her about the headphones, about the voice, about the magic that had changed her life. But she held back. She knew her mom loved her, but magic was something that was hard to explain, hard to believe. And besides, it was her secret—something that belonged just to her, for now. “Everything’s fine, Mom,” she said, giving her a small smile. “I’m just really excited about the concert. And a little nervous, I guess. But in a good way.” Her mom reached out and squeezed her hand. “I know you’ll be great,” she said. “No matter what happens, I’m proud of you for being brave enough to get up there and do it.” She stood up and walked to the door, but before she left, she turned back and said, “You know, your dad and I will be there in the front row, cheering you on. You don’t have to be afraid of anything.” Lila nodded, her throat tight with emotion. “Thanks, Mom,” she said. “That means a lot.” After her mom left, Lila sat down at her desk and looked at her songbook. She felt lucky—lucky to have parents who loved her, lucky to have a friend like Jake, lucky to have found the magic headphones. But she also knew that she couldn’t rely on luck forever. She had to work hard, had to make sure that when she stepped onto that stage, she was ready. The next day at school, Lila decided to ask Mr. Henderson for some feedback. She brought her songbook to music class and waited until everyone else had left before walking up to his desk. “Mr. Henderson?” she said, her voice a little shaky. “Can I ask you something?” “Of course, Lila,” he said, looking up from his papers. “What’s on your mind?” “I… I wrote this song for the concert,” she said, holding out her songbook. “And I was wondering if you could listen to it? And tell me what you think? If it’s any good, I mean.” Mr. Henderson took the songbook from her and flipped through the pages. “I’d love to, Lila,” he said. “Why don’t you sing it for me right now?” Lila’s heart started to race. She had never sung her own song for anyone before—except for the voice in the headphones. But she took a deep breath, closed her eyes for a moment, and then started to sing. She sang with all her heart, putting every ounce of fear and courage and hope into her voice. When she finished, she opened her eyes and looked at Mr. Henderson, waiting for his verdict. He was silent for a moment, his eyes a little misty. Then he smiled, a big, warm smile that lit up his whole face. “Lila,” he said, his voice soft but full of emotion. “That is absolutely beautiful. It’s raw, it’s honest, it’s powerful. It’s one of the best songs I’ve ever heard from a student here.” Lila felt a wave of relief and joy wash over her. “Really?” she said. “You mean it?” “I mean it with all my heart,” he said. “You have a gift, Lila. Not just for singing, but for writing music that touches people’s souls. I can’t wait to see you perform it at the concert. It’s going to be something special.” Lila thanked him and took back her songbook, feeling like she was walking on air. As she walked out of the classroom, she saw Jake waiting for her by the door. “I heard you singing,” he said, grinning. “That was amazing, Lila. Mr. Henderson is right—it’s going to be incredible.” Lila laughed, feeling happier than she had in a long time. “Thanks, Jake,” she said. “You’re always so supportive. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” “Hey, that’s what friends are for,” he said. He paused for a moment, then added, “You know, Mia was hanging around the hallway earlier. She heard you singing, too. I saw her listening, and she looked… I don’t know, surprised, maybe. Like she didn’t expect you to sound that good.” Lila’s heart skipped a beat. Mia had heard her? She didn’t know what to think about that. But then she remembered what the voice had told her—about being brave, about showing everyone who she really was. And she realized that she didn’t care if Mia had heard her. Let her hear. Let her see. Lila was no longer afraid of her. “Let her listen,” she said, her voice steady and strong. “Let her hear what I can do. I’m not hiding anymore.” Jake nodded, looking proud of her. “That’s the spirit,” he said. “You go, Lila.” As they walked down the hallway together, Lila felt a new sense of confidence growing inside her. She knew that there were still days left before the concert, still time to practice, still time to make her song even better. But she also knew that no matter what happened, she was ready. She had the magic, she had her friends and family, and she had her own voice. And that was more than enough.
